Where to Stay in Beijing: Area by Area

Walk to the Forbidden City, or sleep cheap and commute — the trade-offs in each district · Updated September 2026

Short answer

For a first trip, stay in Dongcheng: Wangfujing, Dengshikou or Dongsi. You can walk to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square from the door, and Lines 1 and 5 run everywhere else. Mid-range rooms in that pocket sit around ¥500-900 a night.

Qianmen and Dashilan are the same idea for less money, with more old-Beijing atmosphere and a heavier tourist trade outside your window. Sanlitun and the Guomao CBD suit people who want international restaurants, bars and polished hotels, and who accept a metro ride to every historic sight.

Two rules matter more than the district. Confirm the hotel accepts foreign passports before you pay, and pick a base within a few minutes of a metro station — in Beijing, walking distance to a station beats a nicer building every time.

How Beijing's geography decides this

Most of what you came for sits inside the Second Ring Road, on a north-south axis: the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Jingshan, the Drum and Bell Towers, the Temple of Heaven to the south. The Great Wall is 70km or more outside the city, and the Summer Palace is in the north-west corner.

Beijing is roughly 50km across and traffic is slow. A hotel two metro stops further out costs 20 minutes a day, and over four days that is a morning wasted. Central rooms cost more because they save exactly that.

Wangfujing and Dongsi

The default answer, and it earns the price. The palace's south gate is a 15 to 20 minute walk, Tiananmen is closer still, and Wangfujing station on Line 1 puts the east-west spine at your door. Dongsi, two stops north on Line 5, is quieter and often ¥100-200 cheaper.

Qianmen and Dashilan

South of Tiananmen Square, on the restored Ming and Qing lanes around Dashilan. Century-old shopfronts, cheap local food, red lanterns, and the Temple of Heaven reachable on foot in 15 to 20 minutes. The trade-off is metro depth: Line 2 and Line 8, but fewer ways east and west. Read recent reviews on the cheap guesthouses, where plumbing is the usual complaint.

Shichahai and Nanluoguxiang

Courtyard hotels in the lanes around the Houhai lakes, walking distance from the Drum Tower and the hutong streets. This is the most atmospheric place to sleep in the city, and rooms are typically 15-20 square metres with thin walls. Alleys are narrow, so a taxi drops you at the corner and you walk the last 100 metres with your bag.

Sanlitun and Chaoyang

The embassy and nightlife district around Taikoo Li mall. English is widely spoken, restaurants cover most cuisines, and the bars run late. Line 10 at Tuanjiehu and the Dongzhimen interchange, which is also where the Capital Airport Express ends and the Mutianyu shuttle departs. The cost is distance: allow 30 minutes to the Forbidden City.

Guomao CBD

Skyscrapers, upscale malls and serviced apartments, with Line 1 running straight to Wangfujing. Rooms are bigger and quieter than in the centre and the hotel infrastructure is the most international in the city. Nothing historic is walkable, and rates roughly double central Dongcheng.

Zhongguancun and Wudaokou

University district in the north-west, near Tsinghua and Peking University: the cheapest decent rooms in the city, a student food scene, Line 13 at Wudaokou and Line 4 at Zhongguancun. The problem is reach: 40 to 50 minutes to the palace, longer at peak.

Universal Resort, Tongzhou

The park sits east in Tongzhou, with its own stop on Line 1 and Line 7 and a cluster of hotels, from chain mid-range to on-site resorts. Sensible if the park is the point of the trip. As a base for the Forbidden City it is an hour each way.

Times assume metro with one change and no delays, which is optimistic at 08:00 and 18:00. Rides start at ¥3 and rise with distance, so a stay further out saves on the room and spends some of it on fares.

Can foreign visitors check in?

Confirm before you pay Chinese hotels are legally required to register foreign guests with the local police. Properties without that capability, and there are still some, will refuse you at the desk even with a confirmed booking. The requirement that every hotel needed a special foreign-reception licence has been relaxed in recent years and far more places now accept foreign passports, but the practice varies by property and city. Check that a hotel accepts foreign guests, or message the hotel directly, before booking. When in doubt, confirm when booking.

Practical points that avoid most check-in problems:

More detail on the rule and how to handle a refusal is in the hotels and foreign guests guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which area is best for a first trip to Beijing?

Wangfujing or Dongsi. Both are inside walking distance of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, and both sit on metro lines that reach everything else. Qianmen delivers similar access for less money if you accept a heavier tourist atmosphere.

Is it better to stay near the Forbidden City?

If the palace and Tiananmen are your priority, yes — a 15-minute walk beats a 30-minute metro ride at 08:00. If you want nightlife and international restaurants, Sanlitun is the better base and the commute is the price.

How much does a hotel in Beijing cost?

Mid-range central rooms run roughly ¥500-900 a night, budget rooms and hostels from about ¥200, and the CBD or luxury tier ¥1,200-2,500. Holiday weeks push all of these up sharply and cut availability.

Can foreign visitors stay in any Beijing hotel?

No. Hotels must register foreign guests with the police, and a property without that capability will refuse you. The rules have been relaxed and most reputable hotels now accept foreign passports, but confirm with the property before you pay.

Is Sanlitun too far from the sights?

It is workable rather than ideal. Allow about 30 minutes by metro to the Forbidden City and similar to the Temple of Heaven. Use it if evenings matter more than early mornings, and expect to spend some of each day in transit.

Should I stay near Universal Resort?

Only if the park is your main reason for being in Beijing. The metro ride to the centre is around an hour each way, which costs you a sightseeing half-day. Families doing two park days plus two city days should consider moving hotels between them.

Where do budget travellers stay?

Qianmen and Dashilan for hostels and cheap guesthouses, Wudaokou for student-district rooms, and the lanes around Nanluoguxiang for cheap courtyard beds. All three trade space or polish for price, and none are more than a few minutes from a metro station.

How far in advance should I book?

For ordinary weeks, two to three weeks ahead is plenty. For National Day, Chinese New Year or the May holiday, book one to two months out: central hotels genuinely sell out, and the last rooms are the expensive ones.
