Short answer
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) is at 1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, in the north-east of the city — 25–35 minutes by car from Chunxi Road. You must book online in advance: it is a real-name reservation system with a daily cap of 85,000, and the only people exempt are visitors aged 60 and over and children under six or under 1.3 metres. Tickets open up to 14 days ahead and sell out on holidays.
The adult ticket is ¥55 and the student ticket ¥27. Your passport is your ticket — you book with the passport number and present the same document at the gate. There is a staffed verification lane for visitors without a Chinese ID card, so a foreign passport is not a problem at the entrance.
Get there by Metro Line 3 plus a ¥2 shuttle bus: Panda Avenue station for the South Gate, or Junqu General Hospital station for the West Gate. Arrive for opening — gates at 7:30 from March to October — because the pandas eat and move in the first two hours, and by late morning most of them are asleep with their backs to you.
Tickets and prices
| Ticket | Price | Who it covers | Reservation needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥55 | Ages 18 to 59 | Yes |
| Student | ¥27 | Students at undergraduate level or below — adult education excluded. Bring a valid student ID and an ID document, or you pay the difference at the gate | Yes |
| Children | Free | Under 6 years old, or under 1.3 m in height | No |
| Seniors | Free | Aged 60 and over | No — walk in with your passport |
| Audio guide / sightseeing shuttle | ¥30 each (museum-only audio ¥20) | Optional extras. The shuttle is hop-on, hop-off for the day; the audio guide includes English | Buy at the base |
The base covers 245 hectares and the walk between the two gate areas is long. The internal shuttle is the one optional extra most visitors are glad they paid for, especially in summer.
How the reservation works
- Book on the official channelThe base's official WeChat account and mini-program are the primary route, and authorised third-party platforms sell the same dated, time-slotted tickets. Reservation opens up to 14 days in advance.
- Choose a morning or afternoon slotMorning entry runs 7:30–12:00 and afternoon entry 12:00–17:00 from March to October. The morning slot is the one that matters if you actually want to watch pandas doing something.
- Enter your passport details exactly as printed, then payThe booking is tied to the document number, use the same spelling as your passport's machine-readable zone, since a mismatch is the most common reason people are turned away. Screenshot the confirmation and order number before you lose signal.
- Bring the original documentYou enter by presenting the original ID document used for the reservation, for a foreign visitor, the passport itself. A photo on your phone is not a substitute, though a staffed lane helps visitors without a Chinese ID card.
Opening hours and the daily rhythm
| Period | Morning entry | Afternoon entry | Park clearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| March to October | 07:30–12:00 | 12:00–17:00 | 18:00 |
| November to February | 08:00–12:00 | 12:00–16:30 | 17:30 |
Your slot is not a suggestion. Arriving in the wrong window means you may not get in until your reserved period, so treat the entry time as fixed.
When the pandas are actually worth watching
- 07:30–10:00 is the window. Feeding time, cool air, pandas outdoors and moving. This is the only period where the trip reliably delivers what you came for.
- 15:00–17:00 is the second-best. The afternoon nap ends and some animals become active again, with thinner crowds.
- Midday in summer is the worst, pandas dislike heat, and in July and August they are indoors and still. Cubs appear in the nursery houses from roughly July to October, so prioritise the nurseries in that window.
How to get there
The base is served by Metro Line 3, with a short shuttle or bus ride at the end. Each gate has its own combination, and the shuttles cost a couple of yuan.
| Gate | Metro | Then |
|---|---|---|
| South Gate 南门 | Line 3 to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道), Exit A | Shuttle bus 408, about 10 minutes, straight to the South Gate |
| South Gate 南门 | Line 3 to Zoo (动物园) | Bus 655 or 87 to the Panda Base stop, then about 5 minutes on foot |
| West Gate 西大门 | Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital (军区总医院), Exit B | Shuttle bus 409, about 10 minutes, to the West Gate |
| West Gate 西大门 | Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital, Exit B | Bus 110, 110A or 659 to the Yulei Road stop, then a 600 m walk |
There are also direct sightseeing coaches from the central tourist areas, Chunxi Road, Kuanzhai Alley, Wuhou Shrine, and a route linking the base with the Sanxingdui Museum. Those run on their own timetables and are booked separately.
Taxi and DiDi
| From | Roughly | Time |
|---|---|---|
| City centre (Chunxi Road) | About ¥40 | 25–35 minutes |
| Chengdu East railway station | About ¥40 | 25–30 minutes |
| Shuangliu / Tianfu International Airports | About ¥100 / ¥200 | 40–50 / 60–70 minutes |
Those are the base's own reference figures and they move with traffic. The West Gate has no large car park, so drivers heading there use a nearby commercial car park and a shuttle.
Which gate: South or West?
| South Gate 南门 | West Gate 西大门 | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The original entrance, in the older part of the base | The newer entrance, from the 2022 expansion |
| Closest to | The famous pandas, the nurseries, the red pandas | The new panda pavilions and the indoor houses |
| Crowds | Heavy — this is also where tour coaches arrive | Noticeably lighter |
| Best for | Seeing Hua Hua and the nursery cubs; first visits on a tight schedule | Seeing more pandas with less queueing; anyone not wanting a 07:00 start |
| The catch | Gate queues can run well past opening on weekends and holidays | A long way to the famous enclosures — walk it or take the shuttle |
The celebrity of the base is Hua Hua (花花), whose enclosure draws a queue that can run from 45 minutes to well over an hour for a few minutes of viewing. If Hua Hua is the point of the trip, go South Gate, arrive before opening, and head straight there. If not, the West Gate gives you a calmer, fuller visit.
Rules and practical notes
- No flash photography; it is enforced, and the pandas are close enough that you do not need it. Do not feed or tease the animals.
- Drones and skateboards are prohibited anywhere in the base.
- Wear real shoes and bring water. This is a large hillside site with a lot of walking, and Chengdu is sticky from June to September.
- Food and drink are sold inside, and the visitor areas take Alipay and WeChat Pay.
- Save the base's Chinese name (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) on your phone; it is what drivers and map apps need.
- Allow three to four hours for a visit with the shuttle, or a half day if you walk it.
