Getting to Dunhuang: Airport, Train and Bus

Flights, overnight trains, the Liuyuan question and the last 13 kilometres into town · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Dunhuang has its own airport (DNH) 13 km east of the city and a railway station 10 km east. Both are small and a short taxi ride from the centre. Most visitors fly in from Lanzhou or Xi'an, or take an overnight train.

From the airport, the shuttle bus costs ¥10 and runs three times a day; a taxi or DiDi into town is roughly ¥30-40 and takes 20 minutes. From the railway station, bus route 12 goes into the centre for ¥2, or a taxi costs around ¥30.

There is no high-speed line into Dunhuang itself. The station sits on a branch off the Lanzhou-Xinjiang corridor, so its D-class trains still take around ten hours from Lanzhou. From Xinjiang, the old interchange at Liuyuan is the alternative, with a 1.5 to 2 hour road transfer.

Which way in makes sense

The decision is time against money. A direct return from a major eastern city runs roughly ¥1,500-2,000 in high season. Flying to Lanzhou and continuing by train comes in around ¥800-1,200, at the cost of half a day each way.

Flying in: Dunhuang Mogao International Airport

The airport is Dunhuang Mogao International Airport, code DNH, roughly 13 km east of the centre. It is a single small terminal: baggage comes out quickly and the walk from the gate to the exit is tens of metres.

The route map is short and seasonal. Lanzhou and Xi'an carry the most frequency, with Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Jiayuguan and Zhangye behind them. Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Urumqi get a few flights a week, and schedules shift between the summer and winter seasons.

Weekly counts move with the season and are worth rechecking before booking. Treat them as a picture of which cities have a realistic connection, not a timetable.

Airport to the city

The shuttle is not a metro If your flight lands at 16:00, the next shuttle is likely the 21:00 one, which is a long wait. Check the times against your arrival before deciding, and treat the taxi as the default rather than the fallback.

Trains: Dunhuang Station and the Liuyuan question

Dunhuang Station (敦煌站) is in Mogao Town, 10 to 12 km east of the centre, handling around 40 trains. It sits on a branch line, the most important fact about reaching Dunhuang by rail: the branch adds hours, so a D-class train from Lanzhou takes about 10.5 hours for a distance of roughly 1,100 km.

Outbound, the useful departures are D702 to Lanzhou at 10:15 (arrives 20:43), D2738 to Xi'an North at 08:40 (19:13) and Z6202 to Lanzhou at 20:30 (07:35 next morning). The morning trains leave early and the station is 10 km out, so plan a taxi.

Should you use Liuyuan instead?

Liuyuan is on the main Lanzhou-Xinjiang corridor, which is where the fast trains to and from Xinjiang actually run. Historically most travellers heading to Dunhuang from Urumqi or Turpan got off at Liuyuan and took a bus for the last stretch.

That still works, and the drive is 1.5 to 2 hours. Dunhuang now has its own reasonable D-class service, so the Liuyuan transfer mainly makes sense from Xinjiang when the timing lines up. Do not count on a short connecting train from Liuyuan South; the road is the sensible link. Check the current timetable on the official 12306 channel, because services on this corridor change.

Long-distance buses

The bus station is at 25 Mingshan Road, opposite the Feitian Hotel, phone 0937-8822174. It is the fallback option and a good one along the Hexi Corridor.

Getting around once you are here

The city is small and flat, with four bus routes at a flat ¥2 fare. Route 3 runs from the centre to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake. Route 12 links the city with the railway station and passes the Mogao digital centre. A village bus runs to the Mogao Caves for ¥8.

Taxis often skip the meter outside the centre. Agree the price before you get in. Cars for day hires gather at the Shazhou Hotel crossroads and the junction south of the government guesthouse on Mingshan Road.

Summer evening road closures In recent summer seasons the city has turned Xiyu Road into a pedestrian street from 18:00 to midnight, and closed the lanes around the night market from 19:30. If you are self-driving, route around via Yangguan Road or Mingshan Road in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

Is there high-speed rail to Dunhuang?

Not in the usual sense. Dunhuang Station is on a branch line, so its fastest trains are D-class: about 10.5 hours from Lanzhou and around 11 from Xi'an North. There is no G-class service into the town itself.

How do I get from Dunhuang Airport to the city centre?

The shuttle bus is ¥10 and takes about 20 minutes, but it only runs three times a day, roughly 09:00, 14:00 and 21:00. A local bus stops about 500 m outside the airport gate for ¥3. A taxi or DiDi is ¥30-40 and about 20 minutes, which is the reliable choice if your flight does not match the shuttle times.

How far is Dunhuang railway station from the city?

About 10 to 12 km east, in Mogao Town. Taxi is around ¥30 and takes about 20 minutes. City bus route 12 covers the same route for ¥2 and passes the Mogao digital centre on the way.

Can I fly directly to Dunhuang from Beijing or Shanghai?

Yes, roughly 11 flights a week each. About 3 hours from Beijing, 3 hours 45 from Shanghai Pudong. Frequencies change between the summer and winter seasons, so confirm on the airline or booking channel.

Is it cheaper to fly to Lanzhou and take the train?

Usually yes, by roughly ¥500-1,000 on a return trip, in exchange for about half a day each way. The train from Lanzhou takes around 10.5 hours on the D-class service or 12 to 15 hours on an overnight sleeper.

Do I need to book train tickets in advance?

Yes, especially between May and October and around Chinese public holidays. Dunhuang is at the end of a branch line with limited capacity, and the useful departures sell out. Tickets open on a rolling window on the official 12306 channel, and passports are required for foreign travellers.

What is the Liuyuan route and do I need it?

Liuyuan is on the main Lanzhou-Xinjiang line, 1.5 to 2 hours from Dunhuang by road. It was the traditional gateway before the town's own rail service improved. Consider it mainly if you are arriving from Xinjiang and the timing works. The link onward is by road.

Are there buses from Dunhuang to other Silk Road cities?

Yes. From 25 Mingshan Road there are services to Jiayuguan, Jiuquan, Guazhou, Yumen, Zhangye, Lanzhou, Xining and Golmud, plus Hami, Turpan and Urumqi. Fares run from about ¥24 to ¥260.
