Short answer
Two things need planning: Canton Tower, which sells timed slots and is worth most after dark, and the free civic museums, which run timed reservations with your passport as the ticket ID. The old city is walk-up.
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall costs about ¥10 and closes on Tuesdays. The Nanyue King Museum costs about ¥10 and closes on Mondays. Those two closing days catch more visitors out than any ticket rule.
Timing beats ticket-hunting: museums and temples in the morning, Shamian Island late afternoon, the tower and a river boat after dark. Two days covers the city — the route is in our two-day itinerary.

Canton Tower: book it for the dark
The 604-metre tower on the south bank is the one sight worth paying real money for, and the one most often visited at the wrong time. In daylight you look out over a hazy river delta. After sunset the structure changes colour and you look down at the lit river and the Zhujiang New Town skyline.
Tickets are sold by height and package: a standard deck, higher decks, and the outdoor rides at the top. The standard deck is enough. Book a timed slot on the tower’s own channel for a weekend or holiday; on a weekday off-peak the gate usually takes walk-ups.
Metro: Canton Tower on Line 3, with the APM shuttle to Zhujiang New Town. Allow an hour in the sunset queue in high season.
The old-city trio, in one morning
Three sites within a couple of metro stops of each other make the best half-day in Guangzhou.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall — a 19th-century clan academy covered in porcelain, wood and stone carving, now a folk art museum. An hour is enough. Closed Tuesdays.
The Nanyue King Museum — an intact Western Han tomb under a hill, with the burial chamber you can walk into and the jade suit found inside it. Closed Mondays. The tomb site is the one people mean, near Yuexiu Park on Line 2.
Six Banyan Temple — the working Buddhist temple by the old city, with the Flower Pagoda at its centre. Quiet on weekday mornings.
Shamian Island and the river
Shamian is a car-free sandbank of colonial-era buildings and tree-lined avenues, ten minutes on foot from Huangsha station on Line 1. No ticket, nothing to queue for, and 45 minutes of walking covers it.
The riverfront runs north from there to the tower and the cruise piers. Night sailings come in several classes and leave from more than one pier, past the tower and the lit bridges; check the official channel for current sailings and prices.
Zhujiang New Town: the free cluster
The Guangdong Museum, the library, the opera house and the art museum sit around Huacheng Square. The civic museums are free, entered on a timed reservation that opens a few days ahead; weekend slots go first. The walk between them, with the tower across the river, is the point.
Yuexiu Park and Baiyun Mountain
Yuexiu Park is free, sits on Line 2 and holds the Five Rams statue and Zhenhai Tower; an hour covers the parts a visitor wants. Baiyun Mountain on the northern edge is the escape from the streets: half a day, walking routes, cheap entry, cable car extra.
How booking actually works
- Your passport is the ticket. Reserved and free tickets are tied to the document you booked with, so carry the original rather than a photo.
- Bookings run on Chinese platforms. WeChat mini programs and museum apps, some wanting a Chinese mobile number. If one blocks you, buy at the gate or ask the hotel desk.
- Free slots release a few days ahead. Weekends and holidays go first; midweek usually stays open. Closed days are fixed, so confirm the day before.
What to skip, and what to do instead
- Canton Tower in daylight. Same ticket, half the view.
- Beijing Road for shopping. A commercial pedestrian street; half an hour is plenty, and Liwan’s old streets are better.
- Top-deck packages if the view is all you want: the standard deck is the same skyline, lower down.
- A twenty-minute Shamian stop. Rushing it wastes the calmest place in the city.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book Guangzhou attractions in advance?
Two categories do. Canton Tower sells timed slots and busy evenings sell out; the free civic museums run timed reservations that open a few days ahead. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, the Nanyue King Museum and Shamian Island are walk-up.
How much does Canton Tower cost?
The standard observation deck has been priced at roughly ¥150–230 in recent seasons, with higher decks and the outdoor rides costing much more. Check the tower’s own channel, since packages and seasonal pricing change.
Which Guangzhou museums are free?
The Guangdong Museum in Zhujiang New Town and the city’s art museums are free, entered on a timed reservation with your passport. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and the Nanyue King Museum charge about ¥10, with concessions.
What closes on Mondays and Tuesdays?
The Nanyue King Museum and the Guangdong Museum close on Mondays. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall closes on Tuesdays, except on statutory holidays. Smaller sites take a weekday off too, so check the day before.
When is the best time to visit Canton Tower?
After dark. In daylight you look out over a hazy delta; at night the tower lights up and the river below is the reason to go. Sunset slots sell out first on weekends and holidays.
Can I visit without a Chinese phone number?
For walk-up tickets, yes. Some museum reservation channels ask for a Chinese mobile number. Where that blocks you, buy at the gate, or ask your hotel desk to book it.
How long do the main sights take?
An hour for the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, 90 minutes for the Nanyue King Museum, two hours for the Guangdong Museum or the tower, and 45 minutes for Shamian. The old-city trio plus Shamian fits one day.
