Short answer
The window is October to December. Daytime temperatures sit around 16-24°C, the humidity drops, and the rain mostly stops. November is the driest month of the year, with roughly 35 mm spread over about six rainy days, and it is the month locals treat as the good part of the calendar.
April to September is the wet season, and roughly 80% of the year's rain lands in those six months. June is the wettest, averaging about 22 rain days. July and August reach 33-34°C with humidity that makes the middle of the day unusable outdoors, and July to September is typhoon season, which cancels flights and high-speed trains outright.
Two events override the weather. The National Day holiday from 1 to 7 October is the biggest domestic travel week of the year, and the Canton Fair fills every hotel in the city and pushes room rates up sharply. The 2026 autumn session runs 15 October to 4 November. Book transport and hotels six to eight weeks ahead for either, or pick a different week.
Month by month
Figures are long-run averages, rounded. They set the pattern, not the forecast for your week.
| Month | Typical daytime high | Rain | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 18°C | Low | Quiet after New Year | Dry and clear, damp cold indoors |
| February | About 19°C | Low | Chinese New Year peak | Good weather, worst prices of winter |
| March | About 22°C | Rising | Light | Last comfortable dry month |
| April | About 26°C | Heavy | Moderate | Wet season starts, spring fair crowds |
| May | About 29°C | Wet | Busy around 1-5 May | Hot, humid, short downpours |
| June | About 31°C | Wettest month | Moderate | Plan indoor afternoons |
| July | About 34°C | Heavy | School holidays | Peak heat, typhoon risk |
| August | About 33°C | Heavy | School holidays | Hot and wet, cheap hotels |
| September | About 31°C | About 180 mm | Light until the end | Typhoon season, quiet streets |
| October | 21-29°C | About 70 mm | Busiest month | Best light, worst logistics |
| November | 17-26°C | Driest month | Fair early, then quiet | The best all-round month |
| December | About 20°C | Low | Quiet outside the holidays | Dry, clear, comfortable |
Spring, March to May
March is the sweet spot of the first half of the year: dry, warm, and green. Baiyun Mountain is at its best, and the old city around Shangxiajiu and Yongqingfang is comfortable to walk for hours.
The rain returns in April. It rarely falls as steady all-day drizzle; the pattern is a clear morning, a heavy burst in the afternoon, then clearing. Plan the outdoor half of the day before lunch and keep a museum in reserve. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (about ¥10, closed Tuesdays) and the Nanyue King Museum (about ¥10, closed Mondays) both work as rain cover, and both are covered in our Guangzhou travel guide.
May brings 29°C and the first genuinely oppressive humidity, along with the 1-5 May holiday. Domestic visitors are out in force for those days and train tickets sell out early. After the holiday, May is one of the quietest months of the year at the sights.
Summer, June to August
This is the stretch to design around rather than fight. June alone averages about 22 rain days, July pushes daytime highs to about 34°C, and the humidity makes the mid-afternoon feel considerably hotter than the number.
The workable pattern is early and late. Dim sum from 7 a.m., outdoor sights until about 10 a.m., air conditioning through the middle of the day, then Shamian Island or the riverfront after 5 p.m. when the heat drops.
July to September is typhoon season, and typhoons hit the Pearl River Delta several times a year. When one comes through, flights are cancelled, high-speed trains out of Guangzhou South are suspended, and the tower closes. Keep one day of the itinerary flexible in summer, and check the operator's own service notices rather than a reposted schedule.
Autumn, September to November
September is still hot and wet, but the crowds are gone and hotel prices are at their lowest of the good-weather months. The 1 to 7 October National Day holiday then changes everything: this is the busiest travel week in China, and Canton Tower slots, high-speed train seats and hotel rooms go first.
Mid-October onwards is the best weather of the year. The 2026 autumn Canton Fair runs 15 October to 4 November, in three phases with changeover gaps between them, at the Canton Fair Complex in Pazhou. During those weeks the city's hotel stock is committed, rates roughly double in the central districts, and the metro around Pazhou is standing room only.
Late November is the quietest good-weather window of the year. Rain is minimal, daytime temperatures are in the 17-26°C range, and the tower and the museums are pleasant again.
Winter, December to February
December is genuinely good: dry, clear, quiet, and around 20°C during the day. The clearest skies of the year tend to fall in this stretch, which matters for the view from Canton Tower and for the Pearl River night cruise.
January and February run roughly 10-20°C, and this is where visitors get caught out. Buildings in Guangdong have no central heating, so a hotel room, a museum and a restaurant can all feel colder than the forecast suggests. Bring layers and one windproof outer layer, and ask the front desk for a heater if the room has air conditioning only.
Chinese New Year falls in late January or February. Domestic travel peaks, some smaller restaurants close for two or three days, and hotel rates climb. The compensation is the flower markets and the temple crowds, which are the liveliest thing that happens in the city all year. Confirm the exact dates on the official holiday calendar before booking.
The dates that change everything
| Period | What happens | Effect on your trip |
|---|---|---|
| 1-7 October | National Day holiday, the largest domestic travel week of the year | Trains, flights, tower slots and hotels sell out. Book weeks ahead or avoid the week. |
| Mid-October to early November | Canton Fair, autumn session (2026: 15 October to 4 November, three phases) | Hotel rates roughly double, Pazhou is congested, restaurants near the complex are full. |
| April | Canton Fair, spring session | Same effect as autumn, in a wetter month. |
| Late January or February | Chinese New Year, roughly a week of holiday with travel peaks either side | Peak prices, a few closures, best atmosphere. |
| 1-5 May | Labour Day holiday | Short domestic surge; book trains early. |
| Early April | Qingming holiday | A long weekend of domestic travel, usually in heavy rain. |
What to pack, season by season
| Season | Pack | Leave behind |
|---|---|---|
| March to May | Light layers, a compact umbrella, shoes that survive wet pavement | Heavy coats, sandals before May |
| June to August | Breathable shirts, a second shirt per day, sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, grip-soled sandals | Denim, dark colours, anything that holds moisture |
| September to November | T-shirts plus one light jacket for evenings; a rain shell in September | Shorts after mid-October |
| December to February | Fleece, windproof outer layer, socks, closed shoes, lip balm and moisturiser | Sandals, thin single-layer clothing |
Booking that actually matters
- Canton Tower. Timed slots sold online, and the evening slots sell out first. The standard deck has run around ¥150-230 in recent seasons; metro Line 3 to Canton Tower station.
- Free civic museums. The Guangdong Museum in Zhujiang New Town is free but entered on a timed reservation that opens a few days ahead, with your passport as the ticket ID. Weekend slots go first. Check the museum's own channel.
- Trains. Guangzhou South is the high-speed hub for Hong Kong, Shenzhen and long-distance routes, and it is not interchangeable with Guangzhou East or Guangzhou Station. Book with your passport and allow extra time on holiday weeks.
- Hotels in October and November. Book six to eight weeks ahead, or stay away from Pazhou and use the metro to reach the fair if that is why you are coming.
- The airport transfer. Metro Line 3 runs from Baiyun Airport to the centre in roughly 45-60 minutes for ¥7-10. Terminal 3 is not on Line 3: it needs a free shuttle to Gaozeng station.
Common mistakes
- Turning up on the wrong weekday. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall closes Tuesdays and the Nanyue King Museum closes Mondays. Those two days catch more visitors than any ticket rule.
- Visiting Canton Tower in daylight. Same ticket, hazy delta view instead of a lit river. Go after dark.
- Booking the first week of October. It is a national holiday, not a quiet autumn week.
- Assuming southern China means warm in January. 10-20°C with no indoor heating feels colder than the same temperature at home.
- Treating the airport metro as a single line. Terminal 3 needs the shuttle to Gaozeng.
- Mixing up the railway stations. Guangzhou South, Guangzhou East and Guangzhou Station are far apart; check which one your ticket names.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Guangzhou?
November. It is the driest month of the year, with roughly 35 mm of rain spread over about six days, and daytime temperatures sit in the 17-26°C range. December and March are close behind on weather, but December is busier and March is the last dry month before the rain returns.
Does Guangzhou have a rainy season?
Yes. The wet season runs from April to September, and roughly 80% of the city's annual rainfall falls in that stretch. June is the wettest month, averaging about 22 rain days. Rain usually arrives as short, heavy afternoon downpours rather than steady all-day drizzle, so a morning outdoors and an indoor afternoon works well.
When is typhoon season in Guangzhou?
July to September. Typhoons reach the Pearl River Delta several times a year and can suspend flights, high-speed trains from Guangzhou South and ferry services, sometimes with a day or two of warning. Build one flexible day into any summer itinerary and check the operator's own service notices on the day.
Should I avoid Chinese New Year in Guangzhou?
Not avoid it, but plan around it. Domestic travel peaks, hotel rates climb, and some smaller restaurants and shops close for two or three days. In exchange you get the flower markets and the liveliest week of the year in the old districts. Book transport and hotels weeks ahead, and confirm the exact holiday dates on the official calendar.
Do hotel prices really double during the Canton Fair?
In Pazhou and the central business districts, roughly yes. The autumn session fills the city's hotel stock and room rates rise sharply, with the cheapest rooms going first. The 2026 autumn session runs 15 October to 4 November in three phases. Book six to eight weeks ahead, or stay away from Pazhou and use the metro, and check the fair's official site for the current session dates.
Is July and August too hot to visit Guangzhou?
It is hot but workable. Daytime highs reach about 33-34°C with high humidity, so the practical pattern is outdoors before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m., and air-conditioned sights in the middle of the day. The Guangdong Museum, the Nanyue King Museum and the underground malls in Zhujiang New Town all absorb a hot afternoon.
What should I pack for a winter visit?
Layers, and one windproof outer layer. January and February run roughly 10-20°C, and buildings in Guangdong have no central heating, so a hotel room can feel colder than the forecast suggests. Bring closed shoes, socks and a light fleece, and ask the hotel desk for a heater if the room has only air conditioning.
When is the cheapest time to visit Guangzhou?
The shoulder weeks: late February after the New Year holiday, June outside school holidays, September, and late November once the fair has finished. Room rates and flight prices drop noticeably and the main sights stay open, at the cost of rain in June and September and heat in both.
Is October or November better for Guangzhou?
November for comfort and quiet, October for the clearest light. October has slightly more rain and carries the National Day holiday from 1 to 7 October plus the start of the Canton Fair, which is the busiest stretch of the year. The last ten days of November are the calmest good-weather window.
