Short answer
Book Tianhe, around Zhujiang New Town and Tiyu Xilu, for a first trip: metro, malls and riverfront within walking distance. Book Liwan or Yuexiu if the point of the trip is Cantonese food and old streets. Both are on Line 1, the spine of the city.
Every hotel in China must register foreign guests with the local Public Security Bureau, by scanning your passport at check-in. Some small hotels and guesthouses are not set up for it at all. The field that matters when you book is “accepted for foreign guests”, not the star rating.
Mid-range rooms run roughly ¥250–900 a night by district. Canton Fair weeks break that: rooms listed at ¥600 in an ordinary week can go to ¥1,500–2,500 near Pazhou, Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town.
The five areas worth considering
Guangzhou is spread out, so “central” matters less than which metro line you are on.
| Area | Best for | Metro | Mid-range band | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tianhe / Zhujiang New Town | First visits, business, river views | Line 3, Line 5, APM | ¥450–900 | Modern and anonymous; the old city is 20–30 minutes away |
| Yuexiu / Beijing Road | Sightseeing on foot | Line 1, Line 2, Line 6 | ¥350–900 | Noisy at street level; older rooms for the money |
| Liwan / Xiguan, Shamian | Food, arcaded streets, photography | Line 1, Line 6, Line 8 | ¥250–600 | Fewer international-standard hotels |
| Haizhu: Canton Tower, Pazhou | Night river views, Canton Fair | Line 3, Line 8, APM | ¥300–800 | Prices explode during the fair |
| Baiyun, near the airport | Long layovers | Line 3 (airport branch) | ¥200–450 | 45–60 minutes from the city |
Bands are indicative, not fixed prices.
What each area is actually like
Tianhe is the modern CBD: opera house, library, museums and the widest stretch of riverfront. The cost is character — you could be in any large Asian business district.
Yuexiu holds Beijing Road, Yuexiu Park’s Five Rams statue, the Nanyue King Museum and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, so sightseeing is a walk rather than a ride.
Liwan and Xiguan are old Guangzhou: Shangxiajiu’s arcaded street, Yongqingfang’s restored lanes, Shamian Island on the river. Dim sum here is a local meal, not a staged one — our Cantonese food guide maps the dishes to the streets.
Haizhu is the south bank, for the lit tower outside your window or for the Pazhou exhibition halls on Line 8. Quiet between trade shows, the most expensive square kilometre in the city during them.
Let the metro choose
- Line 1 runs east–west through Liwan, Yuexiu and Tianhe — more of a visitor’s Guangzhou than any other line.
- Line 3 runs from Baiyun Airport through Tianhe and Canton Tower to Panyu and Chimelong.
- Line 2 reaches Guangzhou South railway station, which sits in Panyu — allow 30–45 minutes to the old city.
- Fares start at
¥2; the airport run costs roughly¥7–10.
A five-minute walk to a Line 1 or Line 2 station beats a nicer room twenty minutes from any station.
The registration rule foreign guests keep hitting
Staying outside a hotel — a rented flat or a friend’s place — puts the same 24-hour duty on you or your host. A pilot online service for this opened in several provinces in March 2026; Guangdong was not on the published list, so check the official channel or ask your host to file it at the local police station. Carry your passport between hotels, and confirm the foreign-guest policy in writing before any deposit.
Timing and booking
| When | Effect on hotels | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Canton Fair, spring and autumn | Rates multiply near Pazhou, Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town; some hotels set minimum stays | Book four to eight weeks out, or base yourself in Liwan and commute |
| Chinese New Year | Domestic peak, citywide | Book early |
| Oct–Dec | Best weather, steady demand | Two to three weeks ahead is enough |
| Jun–Sep | Lowest prices, typhoon risk | Book late, stay flexible |
International booking sites and the hotel groups’ own sites both work, and neither changes the registration rule — the desk still scans your passport.
Mistakes that cost a night
- Booking near Guangzhou South. It is the rail terminus in Panyu, not the city centre.
- Skipping the foreign-guest filter. The cheapest listings are often the ones that turn you away at the desk.
- Three nights beside the airport. Fine for a stopover, wrong for a city trip.
- Paying a deposit before checking the fair calendar. Rebooking during a fair week costs more than the original room.
With the room settled, the next questions are time and tickets: see how many days the city needs in the Guangzhou travel guide, the route in the two-day itinerary, or start from the Guangzhou section and the China Travel index.
Frequently asked questions
Which area of Guangzhou is best for a first visit?
Tianhe, around Zhujiang New Town or Tiyu Xilu, on Line 1 and Line 3. Yuexiu along Beijing Road is the alternative if you would rather be in the old centre.
Do hotels in Guangzhou accept foreign guests?
Most mid-range and international-standard hotels do. They register your passport with the police at check-in, as the law requires. Some budget chains and guesthouses cannot complete that registration and decline a foreign passport — filter for “accepted for foreign guests” and keep the confirmation before paying.
Do I have to register myself if I stay in an apartment?
Yes. Stays outside hotels need registering within 24 hours, by you or your host, at the local police station. A pilot online service opened in several provinces in March 2026 and Guangdong was not on the published list — check the official channel.
How much does a hotel in Guangzhou cost per night?
Roughly ¥250–900 for a mid-range room, with Liwan at the cheaper end and Tianhe at the top. During the Canton Fair, rooms that cost about ¥600 in an ordinary week can be listed at ¥1,500–2,500 near Pazhou, Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town.
How much do prices rise during the Canton Fair?
Two to four times normal rates inside the affected districts, and some hotels add minimum-stay rules. The fair runs twice a year, in spring and autumn. Book four to eight weeks ahead, or stay in Liwan or Baiyun and take the metro.
Is it better to stay near Guangzhou South railway station?
Only if you leave early. The station is in Panyu, 30–45 minutes by metro from the old city, with little to do nearby. Liwan, Yuexiu or Tianhe make a better base for a two- or three-night trip.
Which metro line should I stay on?
Line 1 for Liwan, Yuexiu and Tianhe. Line 3 for the airport, Zhujiang New Town and Canton Tower. Line 2 if you use Guangzhou South often. Fares start at ¥2; a short walk to Line 1 or Line 2 beats a nicer room further out.
Does the district change what I can eat?
Yes. Liwan and Xiguan are the strongest for dim sum, roast meats and dessert shops, with Yuexiu close behind. Tianhe has more choice but leans international rather than Cantonese.
