Guilin in 3 Days: City, River and Rice Terraces

Two bases, one one-way river, and the Longji decision · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Three days is the first length that fits Guilin properly. Day one is the city, day two is the Li River down to Yangshuo, and day three is either the Longji rice terraces north of Guilin or a slower day around Yangshuo on two wheels.

The structure works because the river runs one way: about 60 km in roughly 3.5 to 5 hours, finishing at a pier outside Yangshuo, so day two doubles as the change of base. Sleep in Guilin on night one and Yangshuo on night two.

Day three is the real decision. Longji is roughly 80 km and 2 to 2.5 hours north of Guilin, which puts it on the Guilin side of the region rather than the Yangshuo side; from Yangshuo the same trip is around 159 km. If the terraces are the priority, sleep in Guilin for two nights and go out from there.

Day one: Guilin city

Guilin has no metro, buses cost around ¥2, and everything on this list sits within a 15-minute ride of the centre.

TimeWhatNotes
08:00Breakfast: Guilin rice noodles, the local dish and one of the cheapest meals in ChinaAny neighbourhood shop; no booking
09:15Elephant Trunk Hill, the rock arch on the river1 to 1.5 hours. Ticketed; check the official channel
11:15Diecai Hill for the view over the rooftops, or Reed Flute CaveDiecai is a short steep climb; the cave is around an hour underground
13:00Lunch and a rest through the hot middle of the dayCity centre
15:30Zhengyang Pedestrian Street and the Sun and Moon PagodasWalkable, and the lakefront is where the evening concentrates
19:30Two Rivers and Four Lakes night boat, around 90 minutesBook the same day at the pier; weekend sailings sell out

The night circuit runs through connected waterways in the middle of Guilin, past lit bridges and the pagodas, and costs a fraction of the river cruise. Fares vary by boat and season, so treat the ticket window as the authority.

Day two: the Li River to Yangshuo

TimeWhatNotes
06:45Breakfast, check out, bag into storageYangshuo Station is at Xingping, not in the town
07:30Transfer to the pier: Mopanshan for three-star boats, Zhujiang for four-star40 to 50 minutes from the centre. The piers are about 6.5 km apart
08:30Board with the passport; tickets are real-nameBring the document the booking was made under
MorningDeparture and the sail downstreamSailings leave through the morning; the slot is on the ticket
On the waterNine Horse Mural Hill, Yellow Cloth Reflection, the bend at XingpingA three-star berths at Longtoushan pier, a four-star at Shuidongmen
13:00–14:00Arrive outside Yangshuo, transfer into town, lunchThe pier is not central; a shuttle or taxi covers the last stretch
15:30West Street and the lanes behind itThe main strip is loud; the quieter guesthouses sit one lane back
17:00Yulong River bank for late light, or a first look at the countrysideThe Yulong is the smaller, gentler river; rafts run on it too

Boat class decides your morning, so check the ticket the night before. Three-star boats leave Mopanshan, around ¥215 per person with a simple meal. Four-star boats leave Zhujiang, from around ¥360, and berth at the other pier. Both run one way, with no return leg.

Day three, option A: the Longji rice terraces

Longji, the Dragon's Backbone, is a wall of terraced paddies cut into the Longsheng mountainside more than 600 years ago by Zhuang and Yao communities, climbing from roughly 800 to 1,100 metres. Admission is a flat ¥80 on a real-name ticket valid for three days that covers all three villages. They are not connected to each other, and the shuttle runs only inside the village you enter.

TimeWhatNotes
06:30Leave GuilinRoughly 80 km and 2 to 2.5 hours to the ticket area
09:00Arrive Jinkeng Dazhai, the largest zone and the only one with a cable carCable car around ¥55 one way, ¥100 return, to Golden Buddha Peak
09:30Cable car up, then walk between viewpointsWalking down takes 1.5 to 2 hours on stone paths
13:00Lunch in the village, then the lower terraces at an easy paceShuttle within the village costs extra
16:00Soft light on the terraces before the drive backAllow 2 to 2.5 hours back to Guilin
The walking is the part to plan for Dazhai with the cable car suits most people, but the stone paths between viewpoints are steep, uneven and slippery after rain. Pingan has no cable car and is all on foot. A cross-ridge trail links the two villages in about three to four hours, which only works if you sleep in one and start from the other.

Timing matters more than gear. Leaving Guilin before 07:00 puts you at the terraces around 09:00, ahead of the tour groups. The visual peak is September and October, when the rice turns gold, with April to June second for the flooded paddies acting as mirrors.

Day three, option B: Yangshuo on two wheels

The alternative keeps you in Yangshuo and costs nothing in transfers. The classic loop runs along the Yulong River past Yulong Bridge, Moon Hill and the village lanes, and most people cover it in half a day. Bikes and scooters rent by the day around West Street.

The other set piece is Xianggong Hill, around ¥60 to enter, roughly 500 stone steps and a 15 to 20 minute climb above the river bend. It is a sunrise spot with no public transport to the base, so it takes a car, a scooter or a tour. The Yulong also runs bamboo rafts, shorter and gentler than the Li River ones, priced separately.

What to book, and when

  1. Li River boat, three to seven days outReal-name tickets need passport details. Holiday weeks sell out much earlier.
  2. Pier transfer the night beforeConfirm the class, the pier and a pick-up time that leaves 40 to 50 minutes of slack.
  3. Longji, one day aheadA tour handles transport and admission door to door; the DIY version uses the public buses and needs an early start.
  4. Trains on 12306Guilin North to Yangshuo takes 23 to 27 minutes on board and around ¥24–38 in second class, but Yangshuo Station is at Xingping, so allow two hours door to door.

Frequently asked questions

Is three days enough for Guilin and Yangshuo?

Yes, for the city, the river and one big day out. It does not fit Longji and a full Yangshuo cycling day both, so pick one for day three. Four days lets you sleep on the terraces for the sunrise.

Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?

Both, if the river cruise is included. Guilin for the night before the boat, since the piers are 40 to 50 minutes outside the city, then Yangshuo. If Longji is on the plan, give Guilin two nights instead.

How do I get to the Longji rice terraces?

They sit roughly 80 km north of Guilin, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road, or around 159 km from Yangshuo. Tours run door to door including admission; the public route uses long-distance buses from Guilin and a local shuttle. Check the day's departures locally.

How much walking is the terraces day?

As much or as little as you choose at Jinkeng Dazhai, the only village with a cable car, around ¥55 one way and ¥100 return. Pingan is all hiking. The stone paths are steep and slippery in rain.

Is the terraces ticket valid for more than one day?

Yes, it is a real-name ticket at ¥80 valid for three days and covering all three villages. What it does not do is connect them: the shuttle runs only inside the village you enter, so one day means one village.

When are the terraces at their best?

September and October for the golden harvest, with the clearest light. April to June is the second window, when the flooded paddies act as mirrors. Summer is green but hazy; winter is bare, muddy and often in cloud.

Can I do day three in Yangshuo without a guide?

Yes. Bikes and scooters rent by the day around West Street, and the Yulong River loop is flat and well signposted. Xianggong Hill is the exception, as no public transport reaches its base.

Do I need to book the Guilin night cruise?

A day or two ahead is usually plenty, and same-day tickets are often available at the pier. Weekend and holiday sailings are worth reserving earlier. Boats run in the evening for around 90 minutes.
