Short answer
Late October to mid-November is the best window: 12–22°C, dry air, osmanthus in flower, and the crowds gone once National Day week ends on 7 October.
Late March to mid-April is the close second — peach blossom on the Su Causeway, cherry blossom in Taiziwan Park, and the pre-Qingming Longjing harvest in the tea villages. Spring charges for it with rain.
Two things shape a Hangzhou trip more than the season: the public holiday calendar and the hour of the day. West Lake has no gate and no ticket, so nothing sells out — but 1–7 October and 1–5 May turn the shoreline into a queue.
The four seasons at a glance
Hangzhou is humid subtropical, averaging near 17°C a year. Temperature alone says little; humidity and rain decide how a day feels.
| Season | Dates | What it feels like | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | late March – May | 14–22°C, blossom, showers | Best scenery of the year |
| Summer | June – early September | Hot, humid, storms | Hardest season for walking |
| Autumn | late September – November | 12–22°C, dry and clear | The best window |
| Winter | December – February | 2–10°C, damp cold | Fewest people, lowest prices |
Spring: blossom, tea and rain
From late March the hills turn green. The Su Causeway runs with willow and peach blossom, and Taiziwan Park carries cherry blossom and tulips, with magnolia and crabapple following through April.
The tea window is why dates land in late March or early April. Longjing leaf picked before Qingming is the most delicate of the year, and the villages at Longjing and Meijiawu are working farms at that time. Late April gives the same terraces without the crush.
Spring costs you rain — scattered wet days, slick causeway stone, and haze that flattens long views. Mornings are usually the clearest hours.
Summer: the season to design around
June to early September is hot and humid, with a plum rain front in June and early July, then thunderstorms and typhoon-season weather into September. A day that looks fine at breakfast can close in by two in the afternoon.
Summer wants a different shape: dawn on the causeways, air-conditioned museums and tea houses through the middle of the day, the lake again after six.
West Lake at 6am in July is one of the better hours you will spend in China. If a first trip can move, put it in autumn.
Autumn: the reliable season
Late September breaks the heat. To the end of November the air is dry, the light is clean, and walking the length of the lake stops being an endurance test. The osmanthus blooms from late September into mid-October, and the scent arrives before the flowers are visible.
Manjuelong Village is the osmanthus village, and Manlong Guiyu Park runs the West Lake Osmanthus Festival in October. Foliage colour follows into late November.
Mid-October to mid-November is the sweet spot.
Winter: cold, quiet and cheap
December to February sits in the 2–10°C band, with a damp cold that feels lower than the number. Snow is rare, and when it settles the whole city turns out to photograph it. Hotels are at their cheapest and the causeways near empty.
The exception is the Spring Festival. Chinese New Year falls on 17 February 2026, and the rush around it — broadly 15–23 February — is the heaviest movement of people in the world.
The 2026 dates that change everything
| Holiday | 2026 dates | Effect in Hangzhou |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | 1 January | Short break, moderate crowds |
| Spring Festival | 17 February; rush 15–23 February | Peak rail demand, some closures |
| Qingming | 4–6 April | Busiest spring weekend at the lake |
| Labour Day | 1–5 May | Peak crowds and hotel prices |
| Dragon Boat | 19–21 June | Busy long weekend in high summer |
| Mid-Autumn | 25–27 September | Busy, still warm, osmanthus starting |
| National Day | 1–7 October | The busiest week of the year |
China shifts working weekends around these blocks, so domestic travel peaks across the whole spell, not just the public days inside it.
Bookings that actually matter
West Lake takes no reservation — a public park, open every hour, free since 2002. The exception is the Lingyin–Feilai Peak scenic area, which runs a free official reservation through the Hangzhou Lingyin Feilai Peak mini-program in WeChat or Alipay, with slots opening up to seven days ahead. On-site registration was suspended, so turning up without one risks being sent away.
Tea farm visits, lake boats and high-speed rail seats are the other three worth securing. Shanghai–Hangzhou seats go first on holiday Fridays.
The Hangzhou travel guide covers base areas and costs, the West Lake guide covers the lake itself including metro exits, the tea plantations guide explains a farm visit, and the two-day itinerary puts the days in order.
Common mistakes
- Treating summer as a normal season. July and August ask for a dawn-and-dusk plan, not a full day of walking.
- Booking across National Day week. 1–7 October is the worst week of the year for hotels, trains and crowds.
- Expecting a ticket for West Lake. There is none, at any hour.
- Arriving at Lingyin without the mini-program slot. The official reservation opens up to seven days out.
- Walking the whole shoreline. The lake runs to roughly 6.4 km² with about 15 km of shore. One causeway and one boat makes a sane day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Hangzhou?
Mid-October to mid-November: 12–22°C, no humidity, osmanthus in flower, and quiet once National Day week ends on 7 October. Late March to mid-April is the next best window, with blossom and the pre-Qingming tea harvest, at the cost of more rain.
Is autumn or spring better for a first visit?
Autumn, if comfortable walking and reliable weather are the priority. Spring has the better scenery, but it rains more often and overlaps two holiday spikes.
How bad are the crowds during National Day?
1–7 October 2026 is the busiest week of the Chinese year, and the shoreline between the Su Causeway and Broken Bridge becomes a slow-moving queue. Before 7am the lake is still workable, even that week.
Do I need to book West Lake in advance?
No. It is a public park with no gate, no ticket and no closing time, free since 2002. No one should be selling entry to it.
How do I reserve Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak?
Through the free official reservation on the Hangzhou Lingyin Feilai Peak mini-program in WeChat or Alipay, with slots opening up to seven days ahead. On-site registration was suspended. Check the official channel for admission fees.
Is a summer trip a bad idea?
Workable but harder. Build the day around dawn and evening walks with an indoor block in the middle, and keep room to move plans when a storm lands.
What is the cheapest time to visit?
December to February, outside the Spring Festival rush. Hotels drop to their lowest rates and the lake is nearly empty, at the price of 2–10°C and a damp cold.
