Day Trips from Hangzhou (2026): Best Options and How to Get There

Travel times, tickets, water towns and last trains · Updated September 2026

Short answer

The day trips that work from Hangzhou are all within about 90 minutes: Shaoxing (18–30 minutes by rail, second class ¥19–24), Qiandao Lake (40–70 minutes), Suzhou (roughly 1–1.5 hours), and the water towns. Wuzhen is a 90-minute coach ride from the Hangzhou coach stations, or about 40 minutes by rail to Tongxiang plus a local bus.

Pick the water town around your evening. Wuzhen Xizha is ¥150, Dongzha ¥110, both ¥190, with a canal boat at ¥60 per person; the lanterns after dark are the reason to go. Xitang is ¥95, with an evening ticket from 17:00 at about ¥60.

Anything two hours out — Huangshan, Putuoshan, the far hills — belongs in an overnight. Rail back to Hangzhou thins out in the evening and most lines finish before about 22:00, so note the last departure before you leave the city.

Water towns: which one, and why

Wuzhen is the polished one. It has two zones: Dongzha, older and quieter, open from the morning, and Xizha, the larger restored side, open into the night. They are a short shuttle apart, so check shuttle times at the gate.

Xitang is a tighter warren of covered lanes and stone bridges, cheaper and easier to pair with a late lunch. Nanxun is quieter and more residential, and Anchang, half an hour from Shaoxing North, is the least polished of the four.

None of them is a market: the streets sell the same dried fruit and cloth shoes, so go for the architecture, the water and the light.

Combo tickets come and go Water town pricing is set per zone, per season and sometimes per event. Buy at the gate or from the town's own official mini-program rather than a reseller, and treat any figure in a guidebook as a rough reference.

Independent or organised

Organised water-town day tours run roughly ¥300–500 per person including transport, entry and a guide. The same day done independently — a coach ticket plus a park ticket — costs a fraction of that, and you keep control of when you leave.

The trade-off is real: a guide handles the Chinese-language ticket queues, and a private car solves the gap between the station and a village entrance. With children or a tight schedule that earns its price.

Some packages include a tea house or a silk workshop that is a shop with a demonstration attached.

Booking trains and coaches

  1. Use the 12306 app for railChina Railway's own app sells at face value. Register with your passport number, add passengers early, and pay with an international card, Alipay or WeChat Pay. Tickets open a couple of weeks ahead.
  2. Know which station you are leaving fromHangzhou East, Hangzhou station and Hangzhou West serve different lines, and a taxi across town at 07:00 is a real risk.
  3. Arrive 30–40 minutes early at Hangzhou EastOne of the largest stations in the country: security, the platform walk and the boarding window all eat time.
  4. Board with your passportThe system is real-name and the passport is the ticket. The gate reads the document; there is nothing to print or keep.
  5. Fix the return leg when you arriveBuy your return on arrival and confirm the last coach or train of the day then, not when you are tired and it is dark.

Permits and visa limits

Nothing on this page needs a permit. Zhejiang and Jiangsu are ordinary provinces for travel purposes, and a weekend trip there needs no paperwork.

The limit that matters is your visa condition. On the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme you must stay inside the permitted provinces — Zhejiang and Jiangsu are included, and so is Anhui — and hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Hangzhou?

Shaoxing for old-town history and food, 18-30 minutes by rail at ¥19-24 second class. Wuzhen is the best-known water town but rewards an overnight, and Qiandao Lake is the pick for a lake day.

Can I visit Wuzhen as a day trip?

Yes, but you lose the evening, when Xizha looks best. Entry is ¥150 for the west zone, ¥110 for the east zone and ¥190 for both, with a canal boat at ¥60 per person.

Do I need a permit for these places?

No. Zhejiang and Jiangsu are ordinary provinces for travel. On 240-hour visa-free transit, stay within the listed provinces and keep your confirmed onward ticket.

How much do the water towns cost, and how do I get there?

Wuzhen is ¥150 for Xizha, ¥110 for Dongzha or ¥190 for both, plus ¥60 per person for a boat, reached by a 90-minute coach or by rail to Tongxiang plus a local bus. Xitang is ¥95.

Should I take a tour or go independently?

Organised water-town day tours run roughly ¥300-500 per person including transport, entry and a guide. Doing it independently with a coach or train ticket plus a park ticket costs a fraction of that.

What happens if I miss the last train back?

Intercity options thin out in the evening and a cross-city taxi costs many times the train fare. Note the last departure when you arrive, and book a room rather than gamble on the connection.
