Where to Stay in Hangzhou (2026): Neighbourhoods Compared

Lakeside or downtown, what each area feels like after dark, and the rule that decides which hotel will take you · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Book Hubin or Longxiangqiao for a first trip. It is the east shore of West Lake, a few minutes on foot from the water, with restaurants and shops open late and Line 1 running straight to Hangzhou East Railway Station. If lakeside prices look silly, Wulin Square and Fengqi Road are one or two metro stops inland at noticeably lower rates.

Two things decide the booking more than the neighbourhood does. First, the hotel must be able to register foreign guests — some small domestic properties cannot, and a non-refundable rate that will not check you in is an expensive mistake. Second, the 24-hour registration rule: hotels handle it for you at check-in, but any stay outside a hotel has to be registered with the police within 24 hours of arriving at that address.

Typical money: hostel beds from about ¥80, three-star rooms near ¥390, mid-range hotels roughly ¥500 to ¥850, and lakeside addresses above that.

The areas at a glance

Hangzhou's geography is simple: West Lake in the west with hills on three sides, the old commercial core immediately east of the water, the new CBD southeast across the Qiantang River.

AreaMetroAt nightBest for
Hubin / Longxiangqiao (east shore) Line 1 Lakefront promenade, lit causeways, crowds, malls open late First visits, two to three day trips, walkers
Wulin Square / Fengqi Road Line 1 (Fengqi Road also Line 2 per operator maps) Downtown offices and shopping centres, everyday restaurants, traffic Value, longer stays, business travellers
Hefang Street / south lake Line 1 (Ding'an Road / Chengzhan side) Snack streets and historic lanes busy until late Food, heritage atmosphere, shorter walks to the south shore
Qianjiang New Town Line 4 and Line 2 network Riverside lights and skyscrapers, quiet on weeknights Business trips, modern five-star hotels
Hangzhou East station area Lines 1, 4, 6, 19 24-hour transit bustle, luggage, few evening reasons to be there One-night stops, early departures
Tea hills (Longjing, Meijiawu) None — taxi or bus Dark, quiet, dinner plans need a car or a guesthouse kitchen Slow stays, repeat visitors
Xixi National Wetland Park Line 19 (North Xixi Wetland) Resort calm, wetlands and boardwalks, almost nothing else Quiet weekends, families with a car

Hubin and Longxiangqiao: the lake on your doorstep

The east shore is where Hangzhou puts its visitors. Longxiangqiao station on Line 1 exits into the Hubin shopping district, and the lake is a few minutes on foot from there. In the evening the promenade fills with couples, photographers and people practising calligraphy on the paving with water, which is a real thing and oddly hypnotic.

It is also the noisiest option. Traffic on the roads behind Hubin runs late, and a "lake view" room often means a slice of water between buildings. Look for a high floor or a room facing away from the road, and read recent reviews rather than the room name.

Wulin Square and Fengqi Road: downtown value

Two stops inland from the lake, Wulin Square is the shopping and office heart of the old city. Hotels here are cheaper for the same standard, and Line 1 gets you to the lake in a few minutes — or a 20-minute walk if the weather is pleasant.

Fengqi Road is the compromise: still walkable towards the lake, and on an interchange with two lines, which matters if your plan includes days outside the centre.

Hefang Street and the south shore

The south side of the lake has the historic lanes: Hefang Street for snacks and shops, and the quieter roads around Nanshan Road below the hills. Evenings here are lively without the same press of tour groups as Hubin, and the walk up to Leifeng Pagoda and the pagoda's evening lights is close by.

Qianjiang New Town and the station area

Qianjiang is the modern city across the river: glass towers, wide boulevards, the illuminated skyline you see in photographs, and hotel stock aimed at business travellers. It is a fine base for work and a distant one for West Lake, with a metro ride every morning before you are anywhere near the water.

The Hangzhou East station area is the other specialist choice. Line 1 puts you at the lake in about 20 minutes, which makes one night there practical and three nights there a waste.

The tea hills and Xixi

Longjing and Meijiawu villages up in the hills are where people go for guesthouse stays among the tea terraces. No metro reaches them, so every dinner, temple visit and train transfer starts with a taxi or a bus ride down the hill. Beautiful, and a poor first choice for a two-day trip.

Xixi National Wetland Park has its own Line 19 station and resort hotels beside the boardwalks: greener and quieter than the lake, with less to walk to.

The registration rule foreign guests keep hitting

Article 39 of China's Exit and Entry Administration Law requires every foreign arrival to be registered with the local police. In a hotel, the hotel does it: you hand over your passport at check-in and the property submits the record. Nothing else is needed.

The problems start with non-hotel stays — a village guesthouse, an apartment booked through a platform, a night at a friend's flat. There, you or your host must register the address with the police within 24 hours of arriving at that address. Since 21 September 2026 the National Immigration Administration's online registration service has been available nationwide through the official website, app, WeChat and Alipay, after a pilot that began on 20 March 2026 in seven regions including Zhejiang. Registering in person at the neighbourhood police station still works.

Two failures that cost real money Skipping registration can mean a warning or a fine of up to ¥2,000, and the problem tends to surface when you least want it — leaving the country. Separately, a hotel that cannot register foreign guests cannot legally accommodate you, so a cheap domestic listing with no foreign-guest filter can end with you standing in the lobby at 23:00 looking for another room.

Practical protection: filter your search for properties that accept foreign passports, message the hotel through the booking platform to confirm it in writing, and keep the check-in registration slip with your passport.

Booking checks worth making

  1. Confirm the hotel takes foreign passportsAsk in the booking chat before you pay, especially for small guesthouses, apartments and anything marketed mainly to domestic travellers. Keep the reply.
  2. Check the metro line, not the straight-line distance"2 km from West Lake" can mean two kilometres up a hill with no station. Find the nearest station name on the operator map and the nearest line, then judge.
  3. Sort out long-stay registration before check-inFor any non-hotel stay, register the address within 24 hours — online, or at the police station for the neighbourhood. Ask the host which they prefer; hosts who have done it before usually know the online route.
  4. Save the address in ChineseTaxi drivers navigate by Chinese text. A screenshot of the hotel name and address saves a lot of pointing.

Frequently asked questions

Which area of Hangzhou is best for a first visit?

Hubin and the stretch around Longxiangqiao metro station on Line 1. The lake's east shore is a short walk away, restaurants and shops are open late, and Line 1 runs to Hangzhou East Railway Station without a change.

Do all Hangzhou hotels accept foreign guests?

No. A hotel has to be able to register foreign guests with the local police, and some small domestic properties cannot. Filter your booking search for properties that accept foreign passports, and confirm it with the hotel in writing before you pay.

What is the 24-hour hotel registration rule in China?

Hotels register foreign guests themselves when you check in with your passport — no separate trip needed. If you stay anywhere other than a hotel, you or your host must register the address with the police within 24 hours of arriving there, and skipping it can mean a warning or a fine of up to ¥2,000.

Can I register my accommodation online now?

For stays outside hotels, yes. The National Immigration Administration ran an online accommodation registration pilot from 20 March 2026 in seven regions including Zhejiang, and a nationwide online service opened on 21 September 2026 through the website, app, WeChat and Alipay. Registering in person at a police station still works.

What do hotels in Hangzhou cost?

Published booking averages put dorm beds in hostels from about ¥80, two-star rooms near ¥230, three-star rooms near ¥390 and good mid-range hotels between roughly ¥500 and ¥850. Lakeside addresses on the east shore run above those figures, and holiday weeks push everything higher.

Is it worth staying beside West Lake rather than downtown?

For two or three days, yes — the point of the trip is the lake, and walking to it at 07:00 beats a 20-minute commute. For a longer stay or a business trip, Wulin Square or Qianjiang New Town give better value and still connect by metro.

Should I stay near Hangzhou East Railway Station?

Only for a one-night stop or a very early train. It sits on Lines 1, 4, 6 and 19 and reaches the lake in about 20 minutes on Line 1, but the streets around it are built for travellers passing through, not for evenings out.

What is the quietest area to stay in Hangzhou?

The tea hills above the lake and Xixi National Wetland Park. Both are genuinely peaceful, both have village guesthouses, and both need a taxi or a bike for dinner and for sightseeing — a poor fit for a short first trip.

Do I need to keep the hotel registration slip?

Keep it with your passport. Hotels submit your details to the police on check-in, and the slip or confirmation is the proof that the registration was done if anyone asks, including at the airport on the way out.
