Harbin Ice and Snow Festival: A Practical Guide

What Ice and Snow World actually is, the other venues, tickets and the metro, and how cold it really gets · Updated September 2026

Short answer

The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival is a season, not a single park. The centrepiece is Harbin Ice and Snow World, a huge illuminated ice complex on the north bank of the Songhua River in Songbei district, and the two other long-standing venues are the snow sculpture display on Sun Island and the ice lanterns at Zhaolin Park. You can reach Ice and Snow World directly on Metro Line 2, at the station named after it.

Timing is the thing to get right. In recent years the park has opened to visitors in the second half of December, and the festival's official opening ceremony has followed in early January — for the 2025–26 season that was 5 January 2026, with the ice areas already open from mid-December, and the whole thing wound up at the end of February. The 2026–27 dates are announced by the organisers; check the official channel before you book flights.

It is genuinely, seriously cold: January in Harbin averages about -24°C at night and -13°C by day, and it drops below -30°C in some years. The cold is the main thing that decides whether you enjoy this trip, so the packing list matters as much as the itinerary.

The venues, and which ones to pick

Harbin's winter attractions are spread across the city rather than gathered in one ticketed site, and first-time visitors often assume they are the same thing. They are not, and you do not have to do all of them.

VenueWhat it isPractical note
Ice and Snow World (冰雪大世界)The big one: full-scale buildings and towers carved from river ice, lit from inside at night, with ice slides and showsSongbei district, north bank of the Songhua. Metro Line 2 to Ice and Snow World station
Sun Island (太阳岛)Snow sculpture display — carved from packed snow rather than ice, so it looks completely differentSame north-bank area as Ice and Snow World; easy to combine in one day
Zhaolin Park (兆麟公园)The original venue, given over to traditional ice lanterns at a much smaller scaleIn the city centre, so it fits an evening when you are already downtown
Central Street (中央大街)A 1.4 km pedestrian avenue of early-1900s European architecture, in Daoli district — the city's default eveningFree. Food, cafés and the obvious place to warm up

If you have two nights, do Ice and Snow World at night — the lighting is the point, and daytime visits to an ice park are a waste of the best thing about it — and spend the other evening on Central Street with a stop at Zhaolin Park.

The practical numbers

Harbin is a city where the numbers matter, because they decide how long you can stay outside before you need to go back indoors.

Buy before you go, not at the gate Ice and Snow World is the busiest attraction in the city during the season, and the peak dates — the opening week, Christmas, New Year and the Lunar New Year period, sell out. Book through the official channel as soon as your dates are fixed, and bring your passport, since that is your identity document for tickets and entry across China.

How cold it actually is, and how to dress

Harbin in January is a dry, still, brutal cold, which is easier to manage than a damp European winter, but only if you dress for it properly. The mistake almost everyone makes is dressing for the photos rather than for six hours outdoors.

Book accommodation early and check it takes foreigners Peak season is the busiest week of Harbin's year, and not every hotel registers foreign guests. Confirm both the booking and the registration before you commit to flights. See hotels that accept foreigners.

Getting to Harbin and getting around

Harbin is in Heilongjiang, the north-eastern province, and it is the easiest major winter destination in China to reach by rail. High-speed trains run from Beijing, which makes a combined Beijing–Harbin trip straightforward, see the Beijing–Harbin train guide and booking trains as a foreigner.

Once you are in the city, the metro is your friend: it is warm, cheap and directly connects the downtown to Ice and Snow World. Taxis and DiDi work normally, but on the coldest nights the queue for a ride home from the park can be long, which is another argument for the metro.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival?

It runs through the winter, roughly from the second half of December to late February or early March, as long as the ice holds. The 2025–26 edition officially opened on 5 January 2026, with the ice areas already open to visitors from mid-December, and closed at the end of February. Dates for the next season are announced by the organisers, check the official channel.

How much is a ticket to Ice and Snow World?

The standard adult ticket was ¥328 for the 2025–26 season, the same as the previous year. Prices are set season by season, so confirm the current figure on the park's official site before you buy.

Is Ice and Snow World the same as the Ice and Snow Festival?

No. The festival is a city-wide winter season with several venues; Ice and Snow World is its biggest single attraction. Sun Island's snow sculptures and Zhaolin Park's ice lanterns are separate sites with their own tickets.

How cold does it get in Harbin in winter?

January averages about -24°C at night and -13°C during the day, and some years fall below -30°C. It is a dry cold, which is more bearable than it sounds, but only with proper layers, insulated boots and real gloves.

What is the best time to visit?

Early to mid-January gives you the festival at full scale with the ice fully built, though it is also the coldest and busiest period. Late December is slightly milder and still fully open. Avoid the Lunar New Year week if you dislike crowds.

Do I need a ticket in advance?

Yes, book ahead through the official channel for Ice and Snow World, especially around the opening week, Christmas, New Year and the Lunar New Year. Peak dates sell out.

How do I get to Ice and Snow World?

Metro Line 2 to Ice and Snow World station, which leaves you a short walk from the ticket halls. That is the simplest and warmest option, particularly on the way home at night.

Is it worth going during the day?

Go at night. The illuminated ice is the reason to be there, and daylight visits lose the effect. Use the day for Sun Island's snow sculptures or Central Street instead, and go into the park after dark.
