2 Days in Lijiang: An Itinerary

Dayan Old Town, Mu Mansion, Black Dragon Pool and Shuhe, arranged around the hours the town is actually walkable · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Day one is Dayan Old Town: Sifang Street and the canals early, Mu Mansion when it opens, the Lion Hill viewpoint after, and the lanes again in the evening. Day two starts at Black Dragon Pool before the tour groups arrive, then moves out to Shuhe for the afternoon.

The plan is built around crowd timing rather than distance. Everything here is in the old town or a short ride away. What makes or breaks it is being in the right place at 08:00 and staying off the main lanes between 11:00 and 15:00.

Two notes before you start. The old town is at about 2,400 m, so keep day one flat and leave the climbing until you have had a night to adjust. And vehicles cannot enter the lanes, so any ride drops you at a gate.

Day 1: Dayan Old Town and Mu Mansion

07:30-09:00: The lanes before the shops open

This is the hour that justifies the trip. The canal water runs clear, the stone is wet from the night, and the only people out are residents, delivery carts and a few photographers. Walk downhill and downstream from wherever you are staying; the channels lead to Sifang Street eventually, and the upper reaches are the quiet residential quarters.

The Naxi built the water system in tiers: upper reach for drinking water, middle for washing food, lower for laundry. Follow the water rather than the shops and you see a working town rather than a market.

09:00-11:30: Mu Mansion

The Mu family were the hereditary Naxi rulers, and their palace is the one paid site worth building the day around. The originals were destroyed in the February 1996 earthquake and the current complex was rebuilt between 1996 and 1999, worth knowing before you expect Ming-era timber. What you get is scale: roughly 46,000 square metres on an imperial-style axis, with Naxi and Tibetan detail worked into it.

Fees and hours quoted for 2025 vary. The entry fee is reported as ¥40 by most sources, with one quoting ¥45, and children under 1.2 m free. Hours are given as 08:30 to 17:30 or 08:30 to 18:00, and one source lists an evening session from 19:30 to 22:00. Allow 90 minutes to two hours and check at the gate.

Why 09:00 and not 11:00 Mu Mansion is a stop on most group tours. Arriving within half an hour of opening puts you in the throne room with a handful of people. By late morning in a holiday week the courtyards fill.

11:30-13:00: Lunch, then sit still

Eat something Naxi and keep it simple: chicken bean jelly, a Lijiang baba, or a shared hotpot if you are two or more. Then take the middle of the day off. Between roughly 11:00 and 15:00 the main lanes are at their worst, and it is also when altitude catches up with people who arrived the day before. The Lijiang food guide covers what to order and where prices drop.

15:00-17:00: Lion Hill and the viewpoint

Lion Hill sits inside the old town on the northwest side. The timber pavilion on top gives the classic view over grey tile roofs with the snow mountain behind. Two options, and they are not the same thing.

OptionCostWhat you get
Wangu Pavilion (万古楼), Lion HillQuoted at roughly ¥15 to ¥35 depending on sourceSix storeys, the highest roof-level panorama, a 20-30 minute climb to reach it
Wenchang Palace terrace (文昌宫观景台)FreeA lower overlook with the palace's red wall framing the old town. Quieter, and the locals' choice.

Sources disagree on the Wangu Pavilion ticket, ¥15 to ¥35 across 2025 pages, and on whether it closes at 17:30 or 18:00. For the photograph alone, the free terrace does the job. For the view above the roofline, pay for the pavilion and go late afternoon.

17:00-19:00: The blue hour

Facade lighting comes on around 19:00 in summer and about 18:00 in winter, and the best photographic light runs through the hour before that. The big water wheels at the north gate are the landmark shot. Sifang Street has bonfire dancing and crowds from around 20:00.

19:00 onward: Dinner and the bar street

Eat in a courtyard restaurant off the main lanes rather than on Sifang Street itself. Then choose: the bar street, or the Naxi ancient music performance at the Dayan hall, about 90 minutes from 20:00 with tickets reported at roughly ¥120 to ¥160. The troupe plays Tang and Song court repertoire from original notation. A long bar-street night at 2,400 m on day one is the fastest way to lose day two.

Day 2: Black Dragon Pool and Shuhe

07:00-09:00: Black Dragon Pool

Fifteen minutes north on foot from the centre of Dayan, at the foot of Elephant Hill. The park is around 40 hectares and holds the Suocui Bridge, the Deyue Pavilion and the Longshen Temple, built in 1737. The reason to come is the reflection of the snow mountain across still water.

DetailWhat sources say
Entry feeFree with the Old Town Maintenance Fee receipt, or ¥50 at the gate if you have not paid it
Opening hours07:30-21:00 on one source, 07:00-19:00 on another. Check on the day.
Best timeBefore 09:00. The mountain faces east and the early light hits it directly.
Where to standThe arched bridge at the south end of the pool, where the summit stacks above its own reflection

On enforcement: one source states the fee receipt is not checked after 20:30 and that entering before 07:30 avoids it, while others describe payment in an app or via your guesthouse. If you have paid the ¥50, bring the receipt or digital record, because this gate is one of the places it is checked.

Getting there Buses 4 and 13 stop near the Xiangshan junction, and the walk from the old town is about 15 minutes. A taxi from the centre is quoted at roughly ¥10 to ¥15. Foreign visitors are directed to the main gate.

10:00-11:00: Ride out to Shuhe

Shuhe is about four kilometres northwest of Dayan, at the foot of the hills, and part of the same UNESCO inscription. Taxi or DiDi is the straightforward way; ask your guesthouse to call one, since the lanes are not driveable.

11:00-16:00: Shuhe on foot

Shuhe was one of the earliest Naxi settlements on the plain and a staging post on the Tea Horse Road, the mule network that carried Yunnan tea north into Tibet. Under the Mu family it specialised in leather, and its tanners came home from the routes to build bigger courtyards. Look for the gateways sized for pack animals and the upper storeys added for stock. It is Dayan's architecture at a third of the intensity.

Three things carry the visit:

  1. Qinglong Bridge (青龙桥). Around 400 years old and the oldest structure in the village. Stand on it and look uphill for the mountain framed between the lanes.
  2. Sifang Street (四方街). Smaller than its namesake in Dayan and scaled for trading rather than crowds.
  3. Jiuding Dragon Pool (九鼎龙潭). The spring-fed pools below the pine ridge, where Shuhe's water comes from before it splits into three channels and runs along the base of every wall.

There is a short bar row and then silence, which is the argument for sleeping here rather than in Dayan.

16:30-18:00: Back to Dayan

Return for the second evening. If you skipped the Naxi orchestra on day one, this is the night. Otherwise use the last hours for the residential quarters along the upper canals, the smaller bridges, and the parts of town with no shops at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough for Lijiang?

Yes, for the old town and one village. Day one covers Dayan, Mu Mansion and the viewpoints; day two covers Black Dragon Pool and Shuhe. It does not include the snow mountain, which needs its own day and advance booking.

What time should I visit Black Dragon Pool?

Before 09:00, ideally at opening. The mountain faces east, so early light hits the summit directly and the water is still. By mid-morning in peak season the arched bridge is blocked by groups. Sources give the opening time as 07:00 or 07:30.

Do I need to pay the Old Town Maintenance Fee to see Black Dragon Pool?

The park has no separate ticket, but the ¥50 Old Town Maintenance Fee receipt is required, and staff at the gate can usually take payment there. Keep the receipt, since it is valid for a year and is also checked at the snow mountain.

Is Mu Mansion worth the ticket?

Yes, if you want to understand who ruled Lijiang and why the town looks the way it does. It is the reconstructed Mu family palace, rebuilt after the 1996 earthquake. It is not original Ming architecture and it is a group-tour stop, so go within half an hour of opening.

Should I stay in Dayan or Shuhe?

Dayan if you want to be inside the UNESCO town and do not mind bar-street noise. Shuhe if you want quiet, larger courtyards and hills on the doorstep. For two nights, Dayan or just outside a gate saves time. The two are four kilometres apart, walkable but along roads.

Is the altitude going to affect my two days?

The old town is at about 2,400 m. Most people are fine, but headaches, poor sleep and fatigue on day one are common, especially after flying in from a low-altitude city. Keep day one flat and do not add a cable car day at 4,500 m until you have had a night or two.
