3 Days in Lijiang and Around

The Old Town, the snow mountain, and one day outside the walls · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Three days splits cleanly. Day 1 stays inside Lijiang Old Town and the hill above it. Day 2 is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which eats a full day once you count the gate, the shuttle buses, the cable car and Blue Moon Valley on the way down. Day 3 goes outside the walls, and the best version is Shuhe plus Baisha in the morning and a lazy afternoon.

The one thing that decides whether the trip works is the glacier cable car ticket. It is sold by real name on the Lijiang Tourism Group mini-program, released seven days ahead at 20:00, and it sells out fast. If you miss it, the Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow cableways are easier to get and the mountain is still the mountain. Returned tickets are also re-released at 16:00 daily, which is worth watching.

Base yourself in Dayan Old Town or in Shuhe. Budget roughly ¥240 per person for the mountain day before oxygen, food and transport, and ¥50 for the Old Town maintenance fee, which covers a full 365 days across Dayan, Baisha and Shuhe.

Two nights is the minimum people manage. Three days with three nights is comfortable and leaves room for the thing that always happens in Lijiang, which is losing an afternoon to a courtyard cafe.

Day 1: the Old Town, slowly

The Old Town sits at around 2,400 m and covers a dense grid of cobbled lanes with a canal system running through it. There is no gate and no wall, which is unusual for a Chinese old town and is part of why it feels less like a site and more like a neighbourhood.

Start at Sifang Street, the square at the middle of everything, where Naxi dancing happens in the late afternoon and evening and is free to watch. From there the Mu Mansion (木府) is a short walk south-west: the seat of the Mu family who governed this region for centuries, rebuilt after earthquake damage, and roughly two hours if you go through properly. Tickets are quoted at ¥40 on most listings, though one source puts it at ¥80, so check the counter.

Behind the mansion is Lion Hill and the Wangu Tower, the tallest building in the old town and the best wide view over the rooftops. Ticket reports here disagree more than anywhere else in Lijiang: figures of ¥28, ¥35 and ¥50 all appear, one source says the tower no longer charges separately once you have the hill ticket, and a combined Mu Mansion plus Wangu Tower ticket at ¥68 is also quoted. Treat any of these as indicative. Late afternoon light is the reason to climb.

Then walk north to Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭公园), a spring-fed pond with the classic photo of the snow mountain reflected in it. This is one of the two places where the Old Town maintenance fee is actually checked, so have the payment record on your phone.

Day 2: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The mountain is about 30 km north of the Old Town and the whole day goes to it. Entry to the park is ¥100, which covers Ganhaizi and Blue Moon Valley. The internal shuttle bus is ¥20 if you ride no cableway, and is bundled into the cableway tickets if you do.

CablewayTop altitudePrice quotedNotes
Glacier Park (big)4,506 m, boardwalk to 4,680 m¥120-140Sources disagree on the figure. Daily cap reported at 10,000. Sells out.
Spruce Meadow (small)About 3,240 m¥40-60Forest and meadow. Easiest ticket to get.
Yak Meadow (medium)About 3,500-3,700 m¥45-65One 2026 source reports it closed since 4 March 2026 for reconstruction. Confirm before planning around it.

The glacier cable car lands at 4,506 m. From there a 500 m wooden boardwalk climbs to the 4,680 m marker, which takes most people 45 to 60 minutes with stops. Altitude is the real variable here, not fitness. Oxygen cans run ¥10-25 in town and roughly ¥39 at the base, with reports of ¥60 and up on the mountain and vending machines at ¥9.9-19.9. Buying two in town is cheaper than buying one at the top.

On the way down, stop at Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷), a chain of turquoise pools at the foot of the peak. The colour comes from glacial rock flour suspended in the water, and it is at a comfortable altitude, so it works whether or not you rode the big cableway. An hour is enough.

How you get there Public bus 101 runs from Zhongyi Market for about ¥15 and takes roughly an hour, with reported departures from 06:20 to 16:00. A taxi or DiDi one way is roughly ¥80-100 and 40 to 50 minutes. If you take a car, arrange the return or expect to negotiate at the gate. Skip the cheap day tours sold on the street; the ¥40 snow mountain tours and ¥5 Lashi Lake tours are shopping trips.

Day 3: pick one

OptionTimeCost signalBest for
Shuhe + BaishaHalf to full day, easyBoth currently free to enter; Baisha murals about ¥20Almost everyone. Naxi villages, tea-horse road, no altitude.
Tiger Leaping GorgeFull day, 2 to 2.5 h each wayBus ¥20-50; gorge ticket ¥45 or ¥65 depending on sidePeople with a fourth day in hand, or heading on to Shangri-La.
Lashi LakeHalf daySouth shore free; riding packages ¥150-298Birdwatching and a flat walk. Read the warnings before booking a horse.

Shuhe is about 4 km north-west of Dayan and a DiDi runs ¥12-25 for the 15 to 20 minute hop. It is quieter, with the Qinglong Bridge, Jiuding Dragon Pool and a free tea-horse road museum. Baisha sits a further 4 km north and is the oldest of the three UNESCO clusters, with the Ming-era murals in Dabaoji Palace and the Colored Glaze Temple, and a lane of workshops doing Naxi embroidery and Dongba script. Bus 6 reaches Baisha; bus 11 links Dayan and Shuhe.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is 86 km from Lijiang and the buses to Qiaotou leave the main bus station in the morning, generally between 07:30 and 09:30, taking 2 to 2.5 hours for ¥20-50 depending on which report you read. The Upper Gorge has an elevator down to the river at around ¥70 return, or about 1,000 steps to walk it free. Note that one source states the High Trail is closed and the scenic-area ticket does not authorise it, so if hiking is the point of the trip, verify the current status before committing.

Practical notes

Frequently asked questions

Is three days enough for Lijiang?

Yes for the Old Town, the snow mountain and one day outside the walls. Two nights is the usual minimum and feels rushed. Four days lets you add Tiger Leaping Gorge properly or push on to Shangri-La.

Do I need to book the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car in advance?

Effectively yes. The glacier cable car is sold by real name through the Lijiang Tourism Group mini-program, released seven days ahead at 20:00, and it is reported to sell out within minutes at peak times. Returned tickets are re-released around 16:00 daily. The Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow cableways are easier to obtain and need less forward planning.

How much does the snow mountain day cost?

Park entry ¥100 plus the glacier cable car at ¥120-140 is about ¥240 before oxygen, food and transport. Add ¥20-50 for oxygen bought in town and about ¥30 for the return bus, so call it ¥300 for the day. Reports of a whole-day cost around ¥350 include shared transport and two oxygen cans.

Is altitude sickness a problem in Lijiang?

The Old Town at 2,400 m is fine for most people, though a mild headache on the first day is common. The glacier cable car goes to 4,506 m with no acclimatisation, which is where symptoms appear. Move slowly on the boardwalk, skip alcohol the night before, and descend rather than push through if you feel seriously unwell.

Should I stay in Lijiang Old Town or Shuhe?

Dayan if you want the canals, the bars and everything within walking distance. Shuhe if you want quiet, roughly the same architecture and a 15 to 20 minute DiDi ride into the busier town. Guesthouse rates in both sit around ¥200-300 for a mid-range room.

Can I do Tiger Leaping Gorge as a day trip from Lijiang?

It is doable but long. The bus to Qiaotou takes 2 to 2.5 hours each way and leaves in the morning, so you get a few hours at the gorge. Most people who enjoy it either stay a night at Qiaotou or use the gorge as a stop on the way to Shangri-La.

What is the Old Town maintenance fee and do I have to pay it?

It is ¥50 per person, valid 365 days, under rules effective 1 August 2025 that replaced an older ¥80 one-week charge. It covers Dayan including Black Dragon Pool, plus the Baisha and Shuhe clusters. In practice it is verified at Black Dragon Pool and at the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain ticket counter rather than on the lanes. Pay it through the 游云南 app or let your guesthouse handle it.

What is the best time of year for this itinerary?

Late March to May and mid-October to November give clear skies and little rain. July and August are the wettest months and cloud can hide the mountain, which matters because the mountain day is the centre of the trip. Winter is cold at night and clear by day, and the snow line is at its best.
