Short answer
Macau is small enough that a day trip out is easy, and there are three sensible directions. Zhuhai is directly across the border and the cheapest option: walk through Gongbei in 15 to 30 minutes and you are in a mainland Chinese city with seafood streets, a long waterfront and the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom theme park at Hengqin. Zhongshan is further west, best known for the Sun Yat-sen residence in Cuiheng village and hot springs, and it needs a bus or train connection through Zhuhai. Hong Kong is an hour by ferry or about 45 minutes by bridge shuttle, and it is the only one of the three that feels like a full second city.
For a first trip, do Zhuhai. It costs almost nothing, the border is walkable, and it gives you a mainland contrast to Macau's Portuguese streets in a single day. Hong Kong is the better choice if you have already seen mainland China and want the skyline and the food. Zhongshan suits anyone who has done both and wants something quieter.
Two things decide whether a day trip works. First, your passport and visa situation, because each of these crosses a real border with its own rules. Second, the last transport back, because missing the final ferry or a border closing time turns a day trip into an unplanned overnight.
The three trips, compared
| Zhuhai | Zhongshan | Hong Kong | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crosses a border | Yes, Macau to mainland China | Yes, mainland China | Yes, Macau to Hong Kong SAR |
| Getting there | Walk across at Gongbei, or bus or taxi to Hengqin or Qingmao | Bus or train via Zhuhai, or a ferry from Macau to Zhongshan port | Ferry from Outer Harbour or Taipa, or HZMB shuttle bus |
| Travel time each way | 15 minutes to an hour, mostly queueing | 2 to 3 hours | 1.5 to 2 hours by ferry, 2 to 3 by bridge |
| Cost | Free to cross, then local bus fares | Bus or train fare plus taxis | HK$65 bridge shuttle, or around HK$194 ferry |
| Best for | A cheap mainland taste, seafood, theme parks | History, hot springs, a slower pace | Shopping, skyline, museums, dim sum |
| Realistic for a day | Yes, comfortably | Yes, but long | Yes, but you will want a second day |
Zhuhai: the easy one
Zhuhai sits immediately north of Macau and you reach it on foot. The Gongbei Port of Entry on the Zhuhai side faces the Border Gate, Portas do Cerco, on the Macau side, and the two are connected by a walkway through immigration. Crossing takes 15 to 30 minutes in normal conditions and considerably longer at holiday peaks, when queues at Gongbei can run past an hour. Daily crossings at Gongbei run into the hundreds of thousands, so it is worth avoiding 10:00 to 14:00 and the evening return peak if you can.
Two other crossings are worth knowing. Qingmao Port runs 24 hours and uses a joint inspection model that is faster than Gongbei, and it connects to Zhuhai Station for onward trains. Hengqin Port also runs 24 hours and sits closest to Cotai and to Chimelong, which makes it the better choice if you are coming from the Taipa side. Gongbei's own hours are roughly 06:00 to 01:00, so it is not the crossing to rely on in the middle of the night. Confirm current hours on the official channel, since they change with the season and with public holidays.
What to do in Zhuhai
- The waterfront. The Lovers' Road promenade runs along the coast, with the Fisher Girl statue as the local landmark. Good for a couple of hours on foot or by bike.
- Seafood. Zhuhai's restaurants along the coast serve Cantonese seafood at prices well below Macau hotel rates. This is the main reason many visitors cross at all.
- Chimelong Ocean Kingdom. A large marine theme park in Hengqin, close to the Hengqin and Cotai crossings. It is a full day on its own, so it is either the whole point of the trip or not worth attempting alongside the city. Buy tickets in advance through the park's own channel and check the operating calendar.
- Zhuhai Museum and the old town. Quieter options if you want context on the region rather than a beach afternoon.
- Island trips. Ferries run from Zhuhai to the Wanshan island group for hiking and seafood, but these need an early start and are better as an overnight.
Zhongshan: history and hot springs
Zhongshan is west of Zhuhai in the Pearl River Delta, and it is the hometown of Sun Yat-sen, the founding president of the Republic of China. The main draw is the Sun Yat-sen residence and memorial museum in Cuiheng village, a free site built around the house he was born in, with exhibition halls covering his life and the period. It is a national-level attraction and busy at weekends and on holidays. The village also has a film and television studio complex a short walk away, with reconstructed period buildings, which charges a separate ticket.
Zhongshan's second draw is hot springs. The better-known resort area sits in Sanxiang, roughly 20 minutes by road from central Zhongshan and about the same from Zhuhai, which is why it often gets paired with a Zhuhai day rather than treated as a Macau day trip. Springs, pools and spa hotels are the offering, and prices vary widely by season and package, so check the resort's own channel.
Getting there is the awkward part. There is no direct rail link from Macau. The practical routes are a bus or train from Zhuhai, since Zhongshan is on the intercity rail line through Zhuhai and Guangzhou, or a ferry from Macau to Zhongshan port if the route is operating. Schedules on the Macau to Zhongshan ferry have been inconsistent in recent years, so check before you plan around it. Once you are in Zhongshan, taxis and ride-hailing cover the gaps between Cuiheng, Sanxiang and the city centre.
Realistically, Zhongshan is a long day: two to three hours each way once you have crossed the border, then taxis between sites. If you want the hot springs as well as the Sun Yat-sen village, stay a night. If you only want the village, it can be done in a day from Macau with an early start.
Hong Kong: the second city
Hong Kong is the most rewarding day trip and also the one that rewards a longer stay. Two routes connect it to Macau. The ferry sails from Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui and lands at Macau Outer Harbour or Taipa, about 60 minutes at sea and 1.5 to 2 hours door to door, with economy fares around HK$194 on weekdays and HK$212 at weekends. The HZMB shuttle bus runs 24 hours from Hong Kong Port to Macau Port, about 45 minutes on the bridge but 2 to 3 hours in total, for HK$65 in the daytime and HK$70 overnight.
Which way round to do it depends on where you are sleeping. From the Macau peninsula, the ferry to Sheung Wan puts you on Hong Kong Island near the MTR and the Star Ferry, which is the most efficient version of the trip. From Cotai or Taipa, the bridge shuttle and the Taipa ferry terminal are both convenient.
A workable one-day loop from Macau
- Leave Macau earlyThe first sailings and early shuttles give you the most useful hours. Anything after 10:00 and you lose the morning.
- Arrive and get a transport cardAn Octopus card covers the MTR, buses, ferries and most convenience stores, and it saves queuing for single tickets all day.
- Do one district properlyCentral and Sheung Wan for the markets and the Peak, or Tsim Sha Tsui for the waterfront and the museums. Trying to do both in one day means seeing neither.
- Eat a proper Hong Kong mealDim sum at lunch is the obvious choice and the reason many people come.
- Catch an evening crossing backCheck the last ferry sailing, since it is earlier than the bridge shuttle. The bridge runs all night if you lose track of time.
Note that Hong Kong is a separate immigration jurisdiction from Macau, so the day trip means four passport checks in total: Macau exit, Hong Kong entry, Hong Kong exit, Macau entry. It is routine, but it takes time and it means your passport needs to be with you at all times.
Costs at a glance
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Gongbei border crossing, on foot | Free |
| Macau public bus to the border gate | MOP 6, exact change |
| Zhuhai local bus | A few yuan, cash or Alipay or WeChat Pay |
| Chimelong Ocean Kingdom ticket | Check the park's own channel, prices vary by date and package |
| Macau to Zhongshan ferry, if running | Roughly HK$180 in the past, confirm the current fare and whether the route operates |
| HZMB shuttle, Macau to Hong Kong | MOP 65 daytime, MOP 70 overnight |
| Ferry, Macau to Hong Kong economy | Around HK$194 weekday, HK$212 weekend |
Practical notes for all three
- Carry your passport. Every one of these trips crosses a border, and you clear immigration in both directions.
- Check the last return. Gongbei closes in the small hours, the Macau to Hong Kong ferry stops in the evening, and the HZMB shuttle never stops. Plan around the one you are using.
- Sort out payments before you cross. Macau takes patacas and Hong Kong dollars, mainland China runs on Alipay and WeChat Pay. Bind a foreign card to both apps and complete passport verification at home.
- Get data that works on both sides. A mainland China eSIM generally does not cover Macau and Hong Kong in the same plan, so pick a regional option or a plan with roaming.
- Avoid the holiday peaks. National Day week, Chinese New Year and the May Day holiday turn the borders into long queues. Midweek is noticeably calmer.
- Do not stack a border crossing onto your departure day. If you are flying out of Macau or Hong Kong, keep the crossing on a separate day, since queues and weather can add hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do a day trip from Macau to Zhuhai?
Yes, and it is the easiest of the three. Walk across at Gongbei Port, which takes 15 to 30 minutes outside peak times, or use Qingmao or Hengqin, both of which run 24 hours. You enter mainland China, so you need valid Chinese entry permission and you re-enter Macau afterwards on your Macau permission. A Chinese visa is not used by the Macau side of the crossing.
Do I need a Chinese visa to visit Zhuhai from Macau?
You need valid permission to enter mainland China, which is not the same as permission to enter Macau. Many nationalities now enter China visa free for up to 30 days for tourism. If you hold a single-entry Chinese visa instead, leaving to Macau and returning consumes it. Check which rule applies to your passport before crossing.
Is Chimelong Ocean Kingdom worth a day from Macau?
If you like theme parks and marine exhibits, yes. It is in Hengqin, close to the Hengqin and Cotai crossings, and it is a full day. Do not try to combine it with Zhuhai city sights in the same day. Buy tickets in advance through the park's own channel and check the operating calendar before you cross.
How do I get from Macau to Zhongshan?
There is no direct rail link from Macau. The usual route is to cross into Zhuhai and continue by bus or intercity train, which takes roughly two to three hours in total. A ferry from Macau to Zhongshan port has run at times, but the service has been inconsistent, so check whether it is operating and confirm the current schedule before planning around it.
What is there to see in Zhongshan?
The Sun Yat-sen residence and memorial museum in Cuiheng village, which is free to enter and covers the life of the founding president of the Republic of China, plus a period film studio complex a short walk away with a separate ticket. The other draw is hot springs, mainly around Sanxiang, which is closer to Zhuhai than to central Zhongshan.
Is Hong Kong a realistic day trip from Macau?
Yes, but it is a long day and one district is the sensible target rather than the whole city. The ferry takes about 1.5 to 2 hours door to door and the bridge shuttle 2 to 3 hours, so an early start and an evening return leaves you roughly eight useful hours. Many visitors end up wishing they had stayed a night or two.
Which is better for a day trip, Zhuhai or Hong Kong?
Zhuhai if you want a cheap, quick mainland experience with the border on foot and seafood for lunch. Hong Kong if you want a full second city with skyline, museums and shopping, and you do not mind paying four to five times as much in transport and eating. Zhongshan only makes sense once you have done both.
Can I visit Macau, Zhuhai and Hong Kong in one trip?
Yes, and it is a common loop. The order matters for visa reasons. If you hold a single-entry Chinese visa, leaving the mainland for Macau or Hong Kong uses it up, so put the mainland portion first and finish in Macau or Hong Kong. On the 30-day visa-free scheme there is no problem, since each mainland entry is a fresh 30 days.
