Short answer
Macau has three ways in, and they are not interchangeable. The HZMB shuttle bus across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is the cheapest and the only option running through the night, at about HK$65 for the 40 to 45 minute crossing. Ferries from Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui take about an hour at sea and drop you on the peninsula or at Taipa. From mainland China you walk across at Gongbei or Hengqin in Zhuhai.
Budget two to three hours door to door from Hong Kong whichever route you pick. The sailing and the bridge crossing are the fast parts. Immigration, transfers at both ends and the walk to your hotel are what eat the time.
Macau International Airport sits on Taipa, ten minutes from the Cotai resorts and 15 to 25 minutes from the peninsula by taxi. The LRT connects the airport, the Taipa ferry terminal, Cotai and the Barra district on the peninsula, and free resort shuttle buses run from the airport and both ferry terminals to the big hotels.
Compare your options
| Route | Crossing time | Cost, one way | Best for |

From Hong Kong: the bridge
The bridge opened in October 2018 and changed the trip. The shuttle, sold as the Golden Bus, runs between the Hong Kong Port on Lantau and the Macau Port in Cotai, 24 hours a day, every few minutes at peak times and less often overnight.
Two things surprise first-time users. The Hong Kong Port is on Lantau next to the airport, not in central Hong Kong, so you need a bus or taxi out there first. And you clear immigration twice: departure at the Hong Kong building, then arrival at the Macau building. Same on the way back.
From Hong Kong: the ferry
Two operators run the route. TurboJET sails from the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan, and Cotai Water Jet also runs from Sheung Wan to Taipa. Sailings start around 07:30 and the last departures are in the evening, with the timetable changing seasonally and thinning out on weekdays.
- Outer Harbour terminal puts you on the Macau peninsula, a short walk or taxi ride from Senado Square and the historic centre. This is the one to book if the old town is your reason for coming.
- Taipa terminal is next to the airport and the LRT, close to Taipa Village and a short ride from Cotai.
- Book ahead for weekends, public holidays and the Chinese New Year period. Ferries fill up and walk-up tickets sell out.
- Allow 30 minutes before departure for check-in and immigration at both ends.
Sailings have been trimmed as the bridge took traffic, so check the operator's own timetable rather than an old blog post. Hong Kong airport has its own ferry pier, SkyPier, with direct sailings that skip Hong Kong immigration, but whether the Macau route is running changes with the season, so confirm it before building a plan around it.
From mainland China: the land borders
Macau is not mainland China for immigration purposes, so this is a real international crossing with passport control on both sides. A Chinese visa does not get you in, and leaving the mainland here does not use up a Chinese visa. Entering Macau, most foreign passports get 30 days visa free.
| Checkpoint | Zhuhai side | Macau side | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gongbei | Gongbei, next to Zhuhai railway station | Border Gate, north end of the peninsula | About 06:00 to 01:00 |
| Hengqin | Hengqin New Area | Cotai, next to the HZMB Macau Port | 24 hours |
| Qingmao | Zhuhai | North-east of the peninsula | 24 hours |
Gongbei is the busiest crossing in the country on a holiday and the most convenient for the peninsula. It sits directly beside Zhuhai railway station, which is the terminus of the intercity line from Guangzhou, so the walk from the train platform to Macau immigration is a few minutes. Queues there can run to an hour or more during Golden Week, Chinese New Year and the evening peak.
Hengqin is open around the clock and handles the Cotai side, which makes it the better choice if you are staying at one of the resort hotels or coming from the Chimelong complex. Qingmao is newer and mostly used by residents and cross-border workers.
By air: Macau International Airport
MFM is a compact single terminal on Taipa, next to the ferry terminal, and immigration is quick.
- Taxi is metered, with a surcharge at the airport and at the ferry terminals. Cotai is five to ten minutes away for around
MOP 50toMOP 60, the peninsula 15 to 25 minutes forMOP 55toMOP 80. - The LRT has a station at the airport on the Taipa Line, linking the terminal, Cotai, Taipa Village and Barra on the peninsula. Single journeys cost
MOP 6toMOP 12, orMOP 3toMOP 6with a Macau Pass or LRT card. - Public buses cost
MOP 6with exact change. No change is given, so keep coins. - Free resort shuttles run from the airport to the big hotels. They are open to anyone, not only guests.
Getting from the border to your hotel
Do not book a taxi if a free shuttle covers your hotel. The resort buses run from the Macau Port, both ferry terminals, the airport and the Border Gate, and anyone can use them. They only serve the big properties, so a small hotel in the old town means the LRT, a bus or a taxi.
From the HZMB Macau Port or Gongbei it is 20 to 30 minutes to the peninsula and five to ten to Cotai. From the Outer Harbour terminal the peninsula is a short taxi ride, and from the Taipa terminal or the airport the LRT reaches Barra on the peninsula.
The LRT has three lines, Taipa, Seac Pai Van and Hengqin, with 15 stations. Barra is the only station on the peninsula. An East Line linking Gongbei to the Taipa ferry terminal is under construction, with the government aiming to open it in 2029, so Gongbei and the LRT are not connected yet.
Practical notes
- Carry your passport. Every route involves immigration, and Macau hotels require photo ID at check-in.
- Passport validity is checked. Your document needs to be valid for at least 90 days beyond the end of your stay, and immigration may ask about onward travel.
- Typhoons stop everything. When a typhoon signal goes up, ferries stop, the bridge closes and flights are cancelled. Keep the last day of a late-summer trip flexible.
- Buy ferry tickets online from the operator, where the current timetable lives.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to reach Macau by bridge or by ferry?
The bridge. The HZMB shuttle is about HK$65 one way against roughly MOP 190 to MOP 200 for an economy ferry ticket, and it runs 24 hours. The ferry wins on total time if you are already in Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui, since the Hong Kong Port is out on Lantau.
How long does it really take from Hong Kong to Macau?
Budget two to three hours door to door. The crossing itself is 40 to 45 minutes by shuttle and about an hour by ferry. The rest is getting to the terminal, immigration at both ends and the onward ride to your hotel.
Do I need a visa to enter Macau?
Most foreign passports enter visa free, usually for 30 days, with EU and Schengen passports, Japan and South Korea at 90 days and the UK at six months. If yours is not exempt, a visa can be issued on arrival for MOP 100 for up to 30 days, though some nationalities must apply in advance. Check your status on the Macao Government Tourism Office entry requirements page.
Can I walk from Zhuhai to Macau?
Yes, at Gongbei, open roughly 06:00 to 01:00 beside Zhuhai railway station, or at Hengqin, open 24 hours and landing you on the Cotai side. You clear Chinese exit formalities, walk across, then clear Macau entry. Ten minutes when quiet, an hour or more at peak holiday times.
Does going to Macau use up my Chinese visa?
Only if you hold a single-entry visa, in which case leaving the mainland for Macau consumes it and you cannot come back. On the 30-day visa-free scheme each entry is a fresh 30 days. Macau has its own immigration system and does not care about your Chinese visa.
How do I get from Macau airport to the city?
The LRT has an airport station on the Taipa Line, reaching Cotai, Taipa Village and Barra on the peninsula for MOP 6 to MOP 12. Free resort shuttles run to the big hotels. A taxi to the peninsula is around MOP 55 to MOP 80, 15 to 25 minutes, with a small airport surcharge.
Are there free shuttles from the ferry terminals and the border?
Yes. The large resorts run free shuttle buses from both ferry terminals, the airport, the HZMB Macau Port and the Gongbei Border Gate, and anyone can use them. They only cover the big properties, so they are no help for a small old-town hotel.
What happens to transport during a typhoon?
Ferries suspend, the HZMB closes and flights are cancelled, sometimes for a day or more. Typhoon season runs roughly May to December and peaks in August and September. Avoid booking a same-day onward flight out of Hong Kong or Macau in that window.
