Short answer
Nanjing has two strong windows and two punishing ones. Late April and the second half of October give mild air, low rainfall and long walking days; November is quieter and close behind. If you can pick one stretch, take 15 October to 20 November.
Avoid 1–7 October, the National Day holiday, when hotel rates roughly double and Purple Mountain reservation slots vanish. Avoid July to August too, when highs sit near 33°C with humidity locals call the furnace.
Timing here is about crowds more than temperature. Nanjing sits on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line and fills fast on fixed holiday dates, while a normal Tuesday in November feels like a different city.
Nanjing month by month
Highs are typical daytime values, not a forecast. The crowd column is what decides the trip.
| Month | Typical high | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7°C | Lowest | Cheapest and emptiest. Damp cold, short days. |
| February | 9°C | Holiday spike | Book around Spring Festival week, not during it. |
| March | 14°C | Building | Plum blossom first, cherry later. |
| April | 21°C | High but workable | Best of spring. Book two to three weeks ahead. |
| May | 26°C | Rising | Warm and green; 1–5 May is its own spike. |
| June | 29°C | Moderate | Plum rain starts mid-month. Drizzle, not storms. |
| July | 33°C | Low | Furnace month. Mornings and evenings only. |
| August | 33°C | Low | Same heat, plus storm systems off the coast. |
| September | 28°C | Rising late | Heat breaks in the second half; Mid-Autumn spike. |
| October | 23°C | Highest | Best weather, worst first week. Aim for the 8th on. |
| November | 17°C | Low | The month to book. Qixia maples peak mid-month. |
| December | 10°C | Low | Cold, clear, cheapest rooms of the winter. |
The holiday weeks that reshape the city
Two of these follow the lunar calendar, so confirm the official holiday notice for your year.
| Holiday | Typical dates | What it does to Nanjing |
|---|---|---|
| National Day | 1–7 October | Rates roughly double, trains sell out, Purple Mountain slots go days early, roads close to cars. |
| Spring Festival | Late January or February | Two dead days, then heavy domestic travel. Some family restaurants stay shut. |
| Labour Day | 1–5 May | October in miniature, at a better temperature. |
| Qingming | Early April | Three-day spike sitting inside blossom season. |
| Mid-Autumn | September or October | Three-day spike, sometimes adjoining National Day. |
Spring: blossom timing and the wind
Plum blossom comes first, at Meihuashan and around Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum in late February and early March. Cherry blossom follows at Jiming Temple road and Xuanwu Lake, usually the last days of March into the first week of April, for a window of seven to ten days.
Pack layers. A 22°C afternoon drops to 10°C after dark, and wind off the river sharpens it. Which of those old avenues carried which part of the city's story is in the Nanjing history guide.
Summer: the furnace
July and August are months to plan around rather than enjoy. Highs near 33°C with heavy humidity turn a 3km walk across the Purple Mountain sites into twice that. The compensation is empty hotels at their annual floor.
Work outdoors before 9am and after 6pm, with the middle of the day indoors. The Nanjing Museum and the Six Dynasties Museum are the standard refuges, free with timed reservation on their own official channels. Most Nanjing museums close one weekday, commonly Monday — check the official channel for your date.
Autumn: the strongest case
Autumn is dry and clear. Osmanthus scent runs through the parks in late September, the plane trees along Zhongshan Road turn in November, and the maple season at Qixia Mountain, northeast of the city, peaks mid-month.
November weekdays are the quietest version of good weather Nanjing offers: moderate rates, roomy metro, and the walk from Xuanwu Lake up to Jiming Temple done at a normal pace.
What to pack, season by season
- March to May: light layers, a packable rain shell, one warm mid-layer, broken-in walking shoes.
- June to August: breathable shirts, a hat, sunscreen, a refillable bottle.
- September to November: spring layers plus one jacket for evenings.
- December to February: down coat, gloves, scarf, thermal base layers. Buildings are heated, so dress to shed a layer indoors.
Getting around in any season
Nanjing Metro is the seasonal equaliser: air-conditioned in August, heated in January, unaffected by holiday road closures. Line 2 reaches the Purple Mountain area and crosses Line 1 at Xinjiekou. Line 3 stops at Fuzimiao for the Confucius Temple and Qinhuai River district. Line S1 connects to Lukou International Airport. Pay with the QR code in Alipay or WeChat, or buy a single-ride ticket from the machines.
Fuzimiao is an evening district. Arrive around 18:00, eat, then walk the riverfront as the lanterns come on; weekends peak between 19:00 and 21:00.
Pair this page with a route plan. The two-day itinerary sequences the Purple Mountain sites in an order that saves walking, and the Nanjing travel guide covers tickets, apps and arrival.
Timing mistakes visitors make
- Treating October as a whole good month. The weather is the year's best, and the first seven days are its busiest.
- Packing for the average temperature. Spring and autumn swing 10°C or more between afternoon and night.
- Booking Purple Mountain on the day. Slots are free but finite and use timed reservation.
- Assuming the cheapest season is the best. January is cheapest and dampest.
- Turning up on a museum's closed day. Most shut one weekday; check the official channel, not an old list.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Nanjing?
Late April and the second half of October are the two strongest windows, with November close behind — mild, mostly dry and outside the holiday peaks. Late March works if the cherry blossom timing falls your way.
How bad is Nanjing in summer?
July and August daytime highs sit around 32–33°C with heavy humidity, and Nanjing is one of the cities locals call a furnace. Put museums in the middle of the day and outdoor sights before 9am or after 6pm.
When is the plum rain season in Nanjing?
Roughly mid-June to early July. It is not a storm but days of steady drizzle and damp air. A compact umbrella and one indoor backup plan per day cope with it.
Does it snow in Nanjing?
Some winters, usually in January or February, and rarely more than a light covering that melts within a day. It photographs well at Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and on the city wall, but it is not reliable enough to book a trip around.
How crowded is Nanjing during National Day?
1–7 October is the worst week of the year. Hotel rates roughly double, high-speed rail seats sell out, and Purple Mountain reservations fill days early. Book trains on the official 12306 channel and reserve the mausoleum sites ahead.
When do the cherry blossoms open in Nanjing?
Usually late March into the first week of April, lasting seven to ten days, at Jiming Temple road and Xuanwu Lake. The dates shift each year, so check a local blossom forecast before booking.
Is winter a good time to visit Nanjing?
It is the cheapest and quietest season, with clear skies and highs around 7–10°C. The cold is damp, so indoor sights and hot pot do more work than outdoor walks. Hotel rates are the year's lowest.
Does Nanjing get much rain in autumn?
Autumn is the driest stretch of the year, with mostly clear skies and short showers rather than the multi-day drizzle of early summer. Pack a light rain shell anyway; it cools quickly after sunset.
