Qingdao Beer: The Brewery Museum and Beer Street

The 1903 brewery on Dengzhou Road, the museum inside it, and the street that drinks outside its gates · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Beer is not a side attraction in Qingdao, it is the reason the city has the shape it has. The anchor is the Tsingtao Brewery Museum on Dengzhou Road in Shibei district, built inside the original 1903 brewery and opened as a museum on the brewery's 100th birthday in August 2003. Expect two to three hours, a walk through the historic brewhouse and the working production line, and tastings included with the ticket.

Outside the gates, Dengzhou Road Beer Street is a 990-metre strip of beer halls and street kitchens, free to walk, and at its best after dark. This is where you drink draft beer out of a plastic bag with grilled squid and boiled clams, at a table on the pavement.

One timing note: Qingdao's International Beer Festival usually runs from mid-July to mid-August, with venues including the West Coast's Golden Beach, Century Square in Laoshan and the old town. General admission has been free, but the dates and venues are announced each year — check the official channel before you build a trip around it.

The three beer stops

They are close enough to do in one evening, and the museum and Beer Street are on the same road.

StopWhereWhenCost and catch
Tsingtao Brewery MuseumDengzhou Road, Shibei district — the original brewery site, north of the old townDaytime; hours change with the seasonTicket with tastings, commonly reported around ¥50–60. Real-name entry, so bring your passport. Last admission is well before closing
Beer StreetDengzhou Road, directly outside the museumEvening; the strip is open year-roundFree to walk. Pay per round — a plastic bag of draft from a shop is the cheapest way to drink it
International Beer FestivalMultiple venues: Golden Beach Beer City (West Coast), Century Square (Laoshan), and the old townUsually mid-July to mid-AugustGeneral admission has been free. Dates and venues are set annually
Best pairing with the rest of your day The museum sits north of the old town, so it works as the last stop on a day of Zhanqiao Pier and Zhongshan Road, with dinner on Beer Street afterwards. See our two-day Qingdao itinerary for how that fits together.

Inside the museum

The building matters as much as the exhibits. The brewery was founded in 1903 as the Germania-Brauerei, a German and British joint venture, and the early factory buildings are protected heritage. The museum opened on 15 August 2003 — the brewery's centenary — with roughly 6,000 square metres of exhibition space spread over three areas.

  1. The century of historyPhotographs, documents and the founding story, from the German lease of Jiaozhou Bay through the Japanese period, the state era and the brand's export rise. This is also where Qingdao's beer-and-seafood culture gets explained.
  2. The brewing hallsThe historic copper vessels and the old malting floor, then the modern line. Because this is a working brewery site, you look down onto real production rather than a staged display — one of the reasons the museum gets recommended so consistently.
  3. The beer experience and the tastingThe paid end of the visit: a glass or two of beer, including unfiltered "raw" beer (原浆) that is rarely served outside the city, plus the shop. Non-drinkers still get their money's worth from the first two areas.

Tickets, hours and how to book

The one thing to get right is the season. The museum's opening hours are not fixed through the year, listings show a long day in high summer (roughly 07:30–19:30 in July and August, with last entry around 18:30), a mid-season pattern of about 08:00–18:30, and shorter winter days. Older guides still print an 08:30–16:30 window, which is out of date for summer.

Passport, every time Real-name ticketing means the name on the booking has to match the document you carry. This is the single most common way visitors lose an afternoon in Qingdao, at the museum, at the cathedral and on trains alike.

Beer Street after dark

Dengzhou Road's beer strip is about a kilometre long and painted green end to end; the colour is the local landmark, and it exists because the brewery is there. It is a tourist street, openly so, but it is also where locals come to drink the fresh stuff.

What you get: long rows of beer halls with their own tanks, pavement tables, plastic stools, charcoal grills, tanks of live seafood, and buckets of draft beer. What you do not get: a quiet, refined evening. It is loud, bright and best enjoyed before you have opinions about it.

Drinking it the Qingdao way

WhatWhat it isWhere to get it
Raw beer (原浆)Unfiltered, unpasteurised, cloudy, low in gas and drunk young. The local benchmarkThe museum tasting; beer halls on Dengzhou Road
Draft lager (纯生 / 生啤)The standard fresh draft, crisp and cold. What most tables are drinkingAnywhere with a tank or a tap
Beer in a plastic bagDraft poured into a bag from a shop or street counter, sold by volume, drunk within the hourSmall shops and stalls across the city, especially around the old town
The food that goes with itSpicy fried clams (辣炒蛤蜊), mackerel dumplings, sea-vegetable jelly, grilled squid, peanuts, smashed cucumberBeer Street, and the old-town lanes off Zhongshan Road

A few habits worth knowing. 干杯 (gānbēi) means "dry the glass" and is a genuine instruction; 随意 (suíyì) means "as you please" and lets you sip. Drinking in the street is legal and normal. Toasting the table is expected; getting drunk is not a social requirement, and no one will force you. Tipping is not part of the deal, see our tipping guide.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is the Tsingtao Brewery Museum?

On Dengzhou Road in Shibei district, north of the old town, on the site of the original 1903 brewery. Beer Street runs along the same road, immediately outside the museum.

Do I need to book the museum in advance?

Book through the official channel if you can. Entry is by real-name ticket and the museum is one of the most popular attractions in Shandong, so summer and holiday slots fill. Bring the passport you booked with.

How much does the museum cost?

The standard ticket with tastings is commonly reported in the ¥50–60 range, with packages that add more beer or an audio guide costing more. Confirm the current price on the official channel, ours is a band, not a quote.

What are the opening hours?

They change with the season. High summer runs roughly 07:30–19:30 with last admission around 18:30, mid-season about 08:00–18:30, and winter is shorter. Old listings showing 08:30–16:30 are out of date. Check the current notice before you go.

Is the museum worth it if I do not drink beer?

Mostly yes. The historic brewhouse, the 1903 architecture and the working production line are the substance of the visit; the tasting is the last twenty minutes. The site is a protected heritage building as well as a museum.

When is the Qingdao beer festival?

Usually mid-July to mid-August. In 2026 it ran from 17 July to 15 August with three official venues, Golden Beach Beer City on the West Coast, Century Square in Laoshan, and the old town, and general admission was free. Dates and venues are announced annually, so check the official channel.

Is it safe to drink draft beer from a plastic bag?

Yes. It is how the city has always drunk its fresh beer: the bag is filled in front of you from a keg or tank and drunk within the hour. Buy from a shop with turnover rather than one with bags sitting in the sun.

What should I eat with beer in Qingdao?

Spicy fried clams, mackerel dumplings, grilled squid and cold dishes. Order seafood by weight, agree the price before it goes in the pan, and stick to cooked dishes if you have a sensitive stomach.
