Short answer
Suzhou has no civil airport of its own. The nearest is Sunan Shuofang (WUX) in Wuxi, about 35 km by road; the international gateways are Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) and Shanghai Pudong (PVG).
From WUX the airport shuttle drops at Suzhou Railway Station North Plaza in about 45 minutes for roughly ¥50. From Hongqiao, take the train rather than a taxi: a G service reaches Suzhou Railway Station in about 32 minutes, second class from ¥39.
From Pudong the airport long-distance coach is the straightforward option at about 3 hours. Settle one thing first: Suzhou has four railway stations and they are not interchangeable.
Which airport to fly into
| Airport | Code | Distance to central Suzhou | Best onward route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunan Shuofang (Wuxi) | WUX | About 35 km by road | Airport shuttle, about 45 minutes, roughly ¥50 |
| Shanghai Hongqiao | SHA | About 90 minutes by road | High-speed train, about 30 minutes |
| Shanghai Pudong | PVG | About 148 km by road | Airport long-distance coach, about 3 hours |
From Sunan Shuofang (WUX)
The shuttle bus is the default: direct to Suzhou Railway Station North Plaza in about 45 minutes for around ¥50, with luggage space and several departures a day. Seats can be booked through a WeChat mini-program or bought at the arrivals counter.
A taxi or DiDi is quicker at around 35 minutes for roughly ¥120, and worth it for two or more travellers. The app prices the trip before you accept, so there is no negotiation at the rank.
The budget rail route runs Wuxi Metro Line 3 to Wuxi East Station, then a high-speed train to Suzhou North, then Suzhou Metro Line 2 into the city: about 1 hour 50 minutes for roughly ¥60, with no road traffic.
From Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA)
Two things sit at Hongqiao: the airport and the railway station, and the railway station is the valuable one. Trains leave for Suzhou through the day, roughly every 10 to 15 minutes at peak.
To Suzhou Railway Station, a G service takes about 32 minutes with second class at ¥39; a D service takes about 38 minutes at ¥27. To Suzhou North, G trains take about 23 minutes. Dozens of departures run daily.
A taxi to central Suzhou takes around 90 minutes for a multiple of the train fare, with no advantage unless you land late and are heading well outside the city centre.
From Shanghai Pudong (PVG)
Pudong is the far one, at roughly 148 km from Suzhou. The airport long-distance coach is the simplest direct option: about 3 hours, roughly ¥70–100, from the long-distance bus terminal to the Suzhou bus stations including the North Square at Suzhou Railway Station. Tickets are sold at the terminal or at the arrival-hall gates near the coach parking exit.
The alternative runs on rails for most of the way: the Shanghai Airport Link Line or Metro Line 2 to Hongqiao Railway Station, then a high-speed train to Suzhou. It needs a change, but the final leg is fast and the chain beats the coach in evening traffic.
A taxi from Pudong runs into several hundred yuan, which is poor value for a solo traveller and worth pricing only for a group with luggage and a late landing.
The railway stations that matter
Suzhou Railway Station is the main hub inside the city, on Metro Line 2 and Line 4 — the bus centre and the WUX airport shuttle both use its North Square. Suzhou North is on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line only, about 10.5 km north on Fulin Road, served by Line 2. Suzhou Industrial Park Station handles intercity services for the Industrial Park district, with Line 3 nearby. Suzhou New District Station serves the western suburbs, also on Line 3.
Suzhou North to Suzhou Railway Station is about 26 minutes by Metro Line 2, or roughly 30 minutes and ¥50 by taxi. From Suzhou Railway Station, Guanqian Street is reached by taking Line 2, changing to Line 4 and alighting at Chayuanchang Exit 2 — about 36 minutes. Suzhou North stands 14.5 km from the Humble Administrator's Garden.
Metro fares start at ¥2 for the first stage and rise with distance. Check the official channel for current fares and for the payment options open to foreign visitors.

Common mistakes
- Searching for flights "to Suzhou". The airport is in Wuxi. Search WUX, SHA or PVG instead.
- Booking a hotel near the gardens and arriving at Suzhou North. That is a 14.5 km gap with your luggage.
- Taking a taxi from Hongqiao. About 90 minutes and a heavy fare against 32 minutes and ¥39 by train.
- Landing at Shuofang after dark and expecting the shuttle. Check the timetable first.
Frequently asked questions
Does Suzhou have its own airport?
No civil airport. The nearest is Sunan Shuofang (WUX) in Wuxi, roughly 35 km by road; the international gateways are Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai Pudong.
How do I get from Sunan Shuofang Airport to Suzhou?
The shuttle runs direct to Suzhou Railway Station North Plaza in about 45 minutes for roughly ¥50. A taxi or DiDi takes about 35 minutes for ¥120. A slower rail option uses Wuxi Metro Line 3 to Wuxi East, then a train to Suzhou North.
Is a taxi or the train better from Shanghai Hongqiao?
The train, almost always. Services reach Suzhou Railway Station in about 32 minutes (G) or 38 minutes (D), second class from ¥27 to ¥39. An airport taxi takes about 90 minutes and costs several times more.
How long is Pudong Airport to Suzhou?
The coach takes about 3 hours and costs roughly ¥70–100, from the bus terminal at the airport. A taxi covers the roughly 148 km in two and a half hours or more, at a fare in the hundreds of yuan.
Which Suzhou railway station should I use?
Suzhou Railway Station for the city centre — Metro Line 2 and Line 4, and the arrival point for the airport shuttle from Wuxi. Suzhou North for Beijing–Shanghai high-speed services, 10.5 km north on Line 2.
How much is the Suzhou metro?
Fares start at ¥2 for the first stage and rise with distance. Line 2 links both railway stations, Line 4 runs through the old city to Tongli, and Line 3 passes Shantang Street and Pingjiang Road. Check the official channel for fares and payment options.
What is the cheapest way from Shanghai to Suzhou?
The all-metro route through Kunshan: Shanghai Metro Line 11 to Huaqiao, Suzhou Metro Line 11 onward, then a change to Line 3. Cheap and slow. The fast, still cheap option is a second-class seat on a D or G train from Hongqiao Railway Station.
