Short answer
Book in the Gusu old town unless you have a reason not to. Guanqian Street and the Pingjiang Road lanes put gardens, canals and food within walking distance, with Line 1 and Line 4 running through them.
Two alternatives work. Jinji Lake has the big modern hotels and more space per room, at the cost of a 30–40 minute ride to the gardens. The Suzhou Railway Station district is the cheapest practical option and the right one for an early train out.
What catches visitors is registration. Hotels register every foreign guest with the police within 24 hours by scanning the passport at check-in. Stay in an apartment or homestay instead, and you or your host must register in person at a police station within 24 hours. Cheaper domestic hotels that cannot do it will turn you away at the desk.
The registration rule, in plain terms
Article 39 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law requires every foreign visitor's accommodation to be reported to the Public Security Bureau within 24 hours. Which half of the rule applies to you depends on where you sleep.
| Where you stay | Who registers you | At the desk |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel, hostel or guesthouse | The property, at check-in | Hand over your passport. The clerk scans the photo page and entry stamp into a police-linked system, and often takes a live photo. |
| Apartment, homestay or a friend's flat | You, or your host | Go to the local police station within 24 hours with your passport and the address. Nothing happens automatically. |
Ask for the printed registration slip at check-in: it is your evidence that the 24-hour rule was met, and desks do not always offer it.
Online registration for non-hotel stays was piloted from March 2026 in Hebei, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangxi, Chongqing and Sichuan. Jiangsu was not on that list, so a Suzhou apartment stay still means a police station visit. Check the official channel, because the pilot is being widened.
The six bases, compared
| Area | Best for | Metro | At night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guanqian Street | First visits; walking to everything | Line 1 and Line 4 at Leqiao | Busy shopping street, late food |
| Pingjiang Road | Canals and atmosphere | Line 1 at Xiangmen | Lantern-lit lanes, still lively at 22:00 |
| Shantang Street | Canals plus an easy run to the station | Line 2 side of the old town | Quieter, dinner boats on the canal |
| Jinji Lake (SIP) | Big modern rooms, families, business | Line 1 along the west shore | Malls and a lit lakefront |
| Suzhou Railway Station | Cheap nights, early departures | Line 2 and Line 4 | Functional and quiet |
| Tongli Ancient Town | Water-town nights after the crowds leave | Line 4, then about 5 km | Very quiet, most places shut early |
Guanqian Street and Pingjiang Road are ten minutes apart on foot, so the choice is about noise. Pingjiang Road is the prettier walk and the noisier sleep; the lanes one street behind it are the compromise.
Jinji Lake feels like a different city: glass towers, a lit promenade, rooms twice the size for similar money. It suits families and business travel, not a two-day garden trip, because every morning starts with a 30–40 minute ride west. Our Suzhou travel guide shows how the sights group, and the 2-day Suzhou itinerary shows how much of that ride you would repeat.
Rough price bands
Rates swing hard with the calendar: Chinese public holidays and the October week can multiply the same room several times over. These bands describe tiers, not quotes.
| Tier | What you get | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Budget chains and hostels | A clean small room; the lowest band | Station district, outer old-town lanes |
| Mid-range and boutique | Larger rooms, decent breakfast, canal views in the good ones; several times a hostel bed | Guanqian Street, Pingjiang Road, Shantang Street |
| International five-star | Full facilities, pool, English-speaking staff; often four figures a night in high season | Mostly Jinji Lake and the SIP |
Two costs sit outside the room rate. Mid-range hotels and up typically pre-authorise a card deposit of several hundred yuan, released at check-out. And a hotel that cannot register foreigners still charges a cancellation fee if you find out at the desk.
How to book so nobody turns you away
- Filter for foreigner-friendly propertiesInternational booking platforms label hotels that accept foreign passports; a very cheap rate in an odd location is the tell.
- Prefer known chainsMid-range and upper chains are wired into the registration system.
- Message the property before payingOne question is enough: can you register a foreign passport guest?
- List every guest at bookingRegistration is per person, so a double room with one name on the booking creates a problem.
- Check which station your train usesSuzhou has more than one railway station; booking near the wrong one throws away the advantage.
- Confirm holiday datesNational Day and Chinese New Year empty the cheap inventory first. See which Suzhou gardens to visit and plan the hotel around the same calendar.
Check-in, in practice
- Bring the physical passport. A photo or scan will not be accepted, and registration cannot be done without it.
- Expect a deposit: a card pre-authorisation or cash, returned at check-out.
- Ask for the registration slip and keep it with your passport.
- Mention a late arrival. A check-in after midnight can push the hotel's registration into the next day's batch.
The mistakes that cost a night
- Booking on price alone. The cheapest room in the city is usually the one that cannot register you.
- Assuming an apartment booking includes registration. It does not.
- Staying at Jinji Lake for a garden weekend. Two hours a day disappears into the metro.
- Leaving the passport in the room safe. Some garden gates and all train travel need the original.
If a desk refuses you, ask for the refusal in writing, contact the booking platform immediately, and hold a cancellable backup for the same night. Our China Travel section covers the wider set of arrival problems.
Frequently asked questions
Do all Suzhou hotels accept foreign guests?
No. Many smaller domestic hotels cannot take foreign passports because they are not connected to the police registration system. International brands, mid-range chains and licensed hostels generally can. Confirm before you pay.
Do I have to register with the police in Suzhou?
Your accommodation does it if it is a hotel, hostel or guesthouse. In an apartment, homestay or a friend's flat, you or your host must register at the local police station within 24 hours with your passport and the address.
Can I register online instead of visiting a police station?
Online registration for non-hotel stays was piloted from March 2026 in Hebei, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangxi, Chongqing and Sichuan. Jiangsu was not included, so a Suzhou apartment stay normally means a police station. Check the official channel, since the pilot is expanding.
What happens if a hotel refuses me at check-in?
Ask for the refusal in writing, contact the booking platform straight away, and use a backup booking. A refusal is usually a licensing limit rather than a decision about you, and it cannot be argued through at the desk.
Which area is best for a first visit?
The Gusu old town, around Guanqian Street or the lanes behind Pingjiang Road. The gardens, canals and food are walkable, and Line 1 and Line 4 cover the rest.
Is Jinji Lake a good place to stay?
For big modern rooms, families and business travel, yes. For a short garden-focused trip it costs 30–40 minutes each way, twice a day.
