Chengdu to Urumqi by Train (2026): Times, Fares and Booking

One direct express a day at about 28 hours, the high-speed connection through Lanzhou West, both Chengdu stations, and the 15-day booking window · Updated September 2026

Short answer

There is one train a day that does the whole Chengdu–Urumqi run without a change: the direct express out of Chengdu West Railway Station, which leaves in the afternoon and reaches Urumqi in the evening of the next day. Route listings put it at about 28 hours. That is one night on board, not two.

High-speed rail does not shortcut this corridor the way it does in eastern China. Itineraries sold as high-speed run to roughly 27 to 28 hours of total travel and usually involve a change at Lanzhou West, because the corridor west of Lanzhou is a 250 km/h line and the timings do not come out ahead of the express.

Classes are simple: soft sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat on the express, second and first class seats on the D trains. Sales open 15 days before departure on 12306, and the passport used at booking is the ticket at the gate.

The options on this route

Chengdu sits south of the main east–west corridor, so every version of this journey climbs north into Gansu before turning west. That detour is why a route that looks short on a map takes the better part of a day and a night.

OptionClasses soldTypical journey timeStation in Chengdu
Direct express (Z class) Soft sleeper, hard sleeper, hard seat About 28 hours, one night on board Chengdu West Railway Station (成都西站)
Slower conventional services (K class) Soft sleeper, hard sleeper, hard seat Several hours longer than the express, daytime and night running Chengdu West, some from Chengdu main station
High-speed with a change at Lanzhou West Second class, first class; berths on a small number of overnight departures A full day plus the transfer, listed around 27–28 hours in total Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站) for the first leg
Flight — A few hours in the air Chengdu Tianfu or Shuangliu airport
The sleeper here is the direct train On most Chinese long routes the overnight sleeper is the slow, cheap fallback and the daytime high-speed train is the fast option. This corridor is the exception: the berths are on the one train that needs no change, and the high-speed alternative usually costs you a transfer without saving a day. Pick the express unless you specifically want the high-speed experience or the express is full.

The timetable you read is not the timetable you get

Two published listings for the same daily express disagree on the arrival time in Urumqi by about half an hour, and the Sichuan provincial press reported a slightly different figure again when the service was upgraded. None of them are wrong; they were written at different timetable revisions.

China Railway reissues the national timetable several times a year, and long western routes are the ones that move most. Treat every time on this page as the current pattern, then open 12306 for your actual date. Booking on a third-party site without checking 12306 means you may be sold a seat on a service that has quietly been retimed.

Station choices in Chengdu

Two stations matter for this route and they are on opposite sides of the city, so a taxi to the wrong one can cost you the train.

StationWhere it isTrains to Urumqi?
Chengdu West Railway Station (成都西站) West of the centre; served by the city metro network Yes — the direct express and the slower K services
Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站) The city's main high-speed hub, east of the centre, on the metro Yes — as the first leg of a high-speed connection, not as a through train

Read the departure station off the ticket rather than off a hotel's directions. Both stations are large, both are busy from early morning, and neither is a place to arrive twenty minutes before departure with a suitcase.

Chengdu is usually the last stop before the west on a longer Sichuan trip. If you are coming in from the north, the Xi'an to Chengdu page covers the leg that gets you here, and the same-city hop to the Chongqing corridor is on the Chengdu to Chongqing page.

Station choices in Urumqi

Urumqi's two passenger stations sit on different sides of the city, and arrivals from Chengdu land at the newer one.

StationLocationServes
Urumqi Railway Station (乌鲁木齐站) Toutunhe District, about 12 km northwest of downtown; opened 2016 Most long-distance trains and the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed services, including arrivals from Chengdu
Urumqi South (乌鲁木齐南站) Southwest corner of the city — the original main station Standard trains and a small number of high-speed services

Hotels advertised as "near the station" are usually near the South station, which is the older one. Confirm which station your train uses before you book, and expect a 20 to 30 minute drive between the northern station and the city centre.

Daytime or overnight

The direct express runs to a useful pattern: board after lunch, sleep once, spend the next day watching Gansu and the edge of Xinjiang go past, and step off in the evening. Two nights fit inside 28 hours only if the departure slips, so the practical count is one night in a berth.

If the scenery is the point, invert it. Take a high-speed train as far as Lanzhou West early in the day, sleep there, then ride the Lanzhou–Xinjiang line west in daylight. The Hexi Corridor stretch — past the Qilian range, with the Great Wall ruins and the Gobi opening out beyond Jiayuguan — is the part worth being awake for, and it passes around Turpan in the afternoon on that schedule.

Both strategies need a full day of padding. A 28-hour ride with a connection at the far end is not the place to schedule a same-day flight to Kashgar or an evening tour booking.

Seat and berth classes that exist on this route

How to book with a foreign passport

  1. Set the 12306 account up before you travelThe English site and app accept foreign passports, but identity verification has to be finished before the account can buy anything. The steps are in the 12306 English guide.
  2. Enter the name exactly as the passport prints itSurname, given names, middle names, in passport order. A mismatch with the identity record is the most common reason a purchase fails at the last screen.
  3. Book on the day the window opensSales start 15 days before departure. One direct train a day, in the summer peak and around the October holiday, means the berths can go the same morning.
  4. Join the waitlist rather than giving up12306 runs a waitlist that releases returned tickets automatically. Somebody cancels almost every long-haul departure, and the waitlist is free.
  5. Check which Chengdu station you are leaving fromChengdu West for the direct express, Chengdu East for a high-speed first leg. They are not interchangeable, and they are not close together.
  6. Carry the passport you booked withThere is no separate paper ticket to collect in most cases; the passport is scanned at the gate and is what the conductor checks on board.

Change and cancellation rules on long-distance sleepers are stricter than on short high-speed hops, especially inside 24 hours of departure. The train tickets page sets out how the fees step up as departure approaches.

What to expect on board

The express is a conventional long-distance train: a dining car, a trolley, hot water dispensers at the end of each carriage and power sockets, with bedding supplied in the sleeper berths. Passengers eat a lot of instant noodles on this run, and the dining car runs out of the popular dishes on the second day.

Two things catch foreign visitors out. The first is temperature: the heating is set for Chinese passengers who are used to it, so a light layer and a refillable bottle matter more than a heavy coat inside the train. The second is connectivity: mobile signal comes and goes through western Gansu and the Gobi, so download anything you want for the day before you board.

Urumqi is on Beijing time but sits at the far west of the country, which means sunrise arrives around two hours later than the clock suggests and dinner runs late by eastern standards. Nothing about the railway changes for this; just do not plan a morning arrival activity after a 20:00 arrival.

Xinjiang travel has its own paperwork rhythm Some areas of Xinjiang require permits or have restricted access for foreign visitors, and this changes without much notice. That is separate from your train ticket and separate from your visa. Check current conditions for the specific places on your Xinjiang itinerary before you commit to a route that dead-ends at a checkpoint.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the train from Chengdu to Urumqi?

Route listings put the daily direct express from Chengdu West at about 28 hours, leaving in the afternoon and arriving in Urumqi in the evening of the following day. High-speed itineraries with a change at Lanzhou West come out at roughly the same total, around 27 to 28 hours. Timetables are reissued several times a year, so confirm the timing for your date on 12306.

Which Chengdu station do trains to Urumqi leave from?

The direct express to Urumqi leaves from Chengdu West Railway Station (成都西站) on the western side of the city. High-speed connections on the first leg towards Lanzhou use Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站). The ticket names the station and the two are on opposite sides of the city.

Is there a direct high-speed train from Chengdu to Urumqi?

High-speed rail does not shortcut this corridor. The fastest itineraries sold as high-speed come out at around 27 to 28 hours, close to the direct express, and usually mean a change at Lanzhou West, because the last stretch of the route is a 250 km/h line rather than a 350 km/h one.

Is an overnight sleeper available on the Chengdu to Urumqi route?

Yes, and on this route the sleeper is the direct train. The daily express from Chengdu West carries soft sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat, runs through the night and one full day, and delivers one night on board rather than two.

Where does the train arrive in Urumqi?

Long-distance arrivals, including this route, come into Urumqi Railway Station (乌鲁木齐站) in Toutunhe District, about 12 km northwest of downtown. The older Urumqi South station (乌鲁木齐南站) sits on the southwest side and handles a smaller share of services. Check the station on your ticket before booking a hotel.

How far in advance can I book a Chengdu to Urumqi ticket?

China Railway opens sales 15 days before departure, counting the departure date itself, and closes roughly 30 minutes before the train leaves, within 12306's daily service hours. The direct express is a single daily train, so booking on the day the window opens matters more here than on eastern routes.

What does a Chengdu to Urumqi ticket cost?

Fares on this corridor are distance-based and are adjusted from time to time, so the live price in the 12306 app for your date is the only figure worth planning around. As a pattern, hard seat is the cheapest class, hard sleeper sits in the middle and soft sleeper is the most expensive berth on the direct express, with second and first class seats on the high-speed legs. Check the official channel for the current numbers.

Can the ticket be bought with a foreign passport?

Yes. The English 12306 site and app accept foreign passports once identity verification is complete, and the passenger name has to match the passport exactly, including middle names. The same passport is the ticket at the gate. Third-party agents also sell these tickets for a handling fee.

Is it worth changing trains at Lanzhou West?

Only if you want daylight through the Hexi Corridor or the direct express is sold out. The connection adds a change of train and a second ticket without cutting total travel time much, since the corridors converge at Lanzhou and run west on the same line.

Train or flight for Chengdu to Urumqi?

A flight takes a few hours in the air and buys back a full day; the train takes about 28 hours and gives you the desert crossing in daylight if you pick the daytime leg. Chengdu has two airports and Urumqi one, so compare door-to-door times rather than flight time alone.
