Short answer
Guilin and Yangshuo are two halves of one trip with different jobs. Guilin is the hub — airport, high-speed rail, city sights, and the pier where every river cruise starts. Yangshuo is the scenery — a small town inside the karst peaks, where the rafting, cycling and village life happen. Most people arrive in Guilin and spend the bulk of their time around Yangshuo.
The standard split is one night in Guilin and two or three in Yangshuo. The Li River cruise connects them, and it runs one way, downstream — there is no return sailing. Treat it as a scenic transfer rather than a day trip and you avoid the classic mistake of booking a round trip that does not exist.
Three full days is the comfortable minimum: one for the river, one for the Yangshuo countryside, one for Guilin's city sights or the Longji Rice Terraces. Choose April–May or September–November if you can.
Guilin or Yangshuo? What each one is for
The commonest planning error is treating these as interchangeable bases. Guilin is a city of about a million with traffic and towers — the postcard landscape starts at its edge. In Yangshuo it is the front garden.
| Guilin | Yangshuo | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Regional city and transport hub | Small riverside town inside the karst |
| Why you're here | Airport, trains, city sights, cruise departure | Rafting, cycling, villages, viewpoints |
| Time needed | 1 night (2 with Longji) | 2–3 nights, more for slow travel |
| Where to stay | Downtown, near the Two Rivers and Four Lakes | West Street for buzz, Yulong River for quiet |
| Watch out for | It is a city — no karst out the window | West Street is loud and commercial at night |
How many days, and where the nights go
The rule that matters: do the river cruise on the day you change base, so the four hours of scenery double as your transport.
| Total time | Nights | Shape of the trip |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days | 1 Guilin, 1 Yangshuo | Tight. City sights, morning cruise, evening in Yangshuo, leave next morning |
| 3 days | 1 Guilin, 2 Yangshuo | The realistic minimum. Day 2 is the cruise; day 3 is Yulong and Moon Hill by bike |
| 4 days | 1 Guilin, 1 Longji, 2 Yangshuo | Adds the rice terraces as a full day between city and river |
| 5 days | 1 Guilin, 1 Longji, 3 Yangshuo | Comfortable. Xingping and Xianggong Hill sunrise get their own day |
How to get between Guilin and Yangshuo
Four options, and they are different products. The cruise is a sightseeing experience that happens to move you; the rest is transport.
| Option | Time | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Li River cruise | 4–5 hours | The full karst river corridor. Going Guilin → Yangshuo for the first time |
| High-speed train | 20–50 min on board, 2–3 hours door to door | Almost nothing — the track runs away from the river. Best for the return leg |
| Bus | About 1.5–2.5 hours | Highway and farmland, occasional peaks. Frequent departures |
| Private car / DiDi | 1–1.5 hours | Highway. Groups, luggage, late arrivals |
Book the rail leg on 12306 with your passport, Guilin North and Guilin West are the high-speed stations.
What to do in Guilin
Guilin earns its night or two, but be honest about it: a city with a handful of good sights, not a landscape destination in itself.
- Elephant Trunk Hill, the city's emblem, a limestone hill with a water-worn arch on the riverbank. Quick, best late afternoon.
- Reed Flute Cave, a large, heavily lit cave system northwest of town. Cheesy in places, impressive in scale.
- Two Rivers and Four Lakes, the downtown water system and the best thing to do after dark. Walking the illuminated banks is free.
- Jingjiang Princes' City, a Ming-dynasty princely compound in the city centre, with Solitary Beauty Peak behind it.
- Guilin rice noodles, the local breakfast, tossed dry with pickles and a bowl of broth alongside. Cheap and everywhere.
City attractions increasingly need online or on-site booking with passport registration, so read the attraction booking guide before you queue at a gate.
What to do in Yangshuo
This is where the trip pays off. Yangshuo's draw is not one monument; it is a whole valley you move through slowly.
- Yulong River, the calm, shallow river through the paddies west of town. Hand-poled bamboo rafting here is the best half-day in the area.
- Cycling the countryside, flat, paved and short-distanced. See the Yangshuo bike routes guide.
- Moon Hill, a karst peak with a natural arch through it, at the southern end of the Ten-Mile Gallery. Visible from the road; you pay only to climb.
- Xingping, an old town on the Li River with the exact viewpoint printed on the 20-yuan note, about 20 minutes' walk from the main street.
- Xianggong Hill, the sunrise viewpoint over the river's big bend. Pre-dawn start, three platforms, small entrance fee. Worth it once.
- West Street, the old stone pedestrian street. Quiet by day, bars and live music at night.
- Impression Liu Sanjie, Zhang Yimou's outdoor river show, staged on the water with the peaks behind it. Prices vary by seat class, so confirm the current figure when booking.
Is the Longji Rice Terraces detour worth it?
Longji (Longsheng) is roughly 90 km and two to two and a half hours by road north of Guilin, considerably further from Yangshuo. That geography decides the answer.
- Do it from Guilin, not Yangshuo. From Yangshuo it means three-plus hours of driving each way.
- A day trip gives you 3–4 hours on site, enough for accessible Ping'an village if you don't hike far.
- An overnight is much better. A village guesthouse buys you sunrise, sunset and longer trails.
- Timing matters. Flooded and mirror-like in late spring, brilliant green in summer, golden around the late-September to October harvest.
If your trip is three days or less, skip it. With four or five days and a taste for mountains, it is one of the best additions in southern China.
When to go, and when not to
The Li River is a monsoon-fed working river, and the water level shapes your trip more than the temperature does.
- April–May and September–November are the sweet spots: green peaks, workable water, and the mist that makes the landscape look like the paintings.
- January to March is the dry season. Water levels drop, hills are less green, and cruises may run a shortened route with adjusted fares.
- May and June bring heavy rain. High water can cancel cruises outright, so keep a land-transport fallback in mind.
- Avoid the holiday windows. The first week of October and the early-May holiday turn the river into a queue of boats. Weekdays are calmer than weekends all year.
Pack for rain whatever the month: a cruise boat's upper deck is open to the sky.
Getting there and the practical bits
By air: Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) is roughly 28–30 km from the city centre. The airport shuttle costs around ¥20 and takes about 50–60 minutes; a taxi runs roughly ¥80–100 and 45–55 minutes. There is also a direct airport coach to Yangshuo if you are skipping Guilin entirely, confirm current times at the airport bus desk. See the airport transfer guide.
By rail: Guilin connects to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanning, Changsha, Guiyang and beyond. Beijing and Shanghai have no direct high-speed line; you change at Changsha or Guangzhou. For the northern route see Guilin to Beijing by train.
On the ground: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly; it is how you pay for bikes, rafts, noodles and taxis. Install Amap (高德地图) for navigation, because Google Maps is unreliable on mainland China's village lanes. Check your entry requirements in the visa-free guide.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need?
Three full days is the comfortable minimum: one for the Li River, one for the Yangshuo countryside, one for Guilin city or Longji. Five days covers everything plus Xingping and a sunrise viewpoint.
Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?
Both, briefly. One night in Guilin for arrival and the city sights, then two or three nights in Yangshuo where the scenery and activities are.
Is the Li River cruise a round trip?
No. It runs one way, downstream from Guilin to Yangshuo, with no return sailing. For the trip back use the high-speed train, a bus or a private car.
Does the train stop in Yangshuo town?
No. Yangshuo Station is at Xingping, roughly 25 km from town, and the shuttle or taxi takes about 40–50 minutes. The ride itself is only 20–50 minutes, so plan for two to three hours door to door.
Is the Longji Rice Terraces day trip worth it?
Yes if you have four days or more and start from Guilin, where the drive is two to two and a half hours. From Yangshuo it is a very long day. An overnight beats a day trip.
When is the best time to visit?
April–May and September–November. Avoid the first week of October and the early-May holiday. January to March is dry with lower water; May and June can bring rain heavy enough to cancel cruises.
Do I need cash?
Rarely. Alipay and WeChat Pay cover almost everything, from bike rental to street food. Keep a little cash for the odd village stall.
Can I see the 20-yuan view without the cruise?
Yes. It is at Xingping, about 20 minutes' walk from the old town's main street along the riverbank. It is a free public spot and the best reason to put Xingping on your itinerary.
