Short answer
One direct daytime train a day runs from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Beijing West: about 8 to 9 hours for roughly 2,400 km, which makes it one of the longest single high-speed runs in China. An overnight sleeper service runs on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings and arrives in Beijing early the next morning.
Second class on the daytime train is about CNY 1,248, quoted in Hong Kong as roughly HK$1,435 because fares bought through Hong Kong channels are sold in Hong Kong dollars and adjusted monthly. First class is about CNY 1,997 and business class about CNY 3,900. Sleeper berths are priced in RMB and cost considerably more than a seat.
The structural difference from every other Chinese train: you clear both Hong Kong exit and mainland entry immigration inside West Kowloon Station before you board — there is no border stop. You must already be eligible to enter mainland China when you get on, and the clearance area is a one-way door.

Fares and timings are published MTR and China Railway figures as of September 2026. HKD fares are recalculated monthly against the exchange rate and published on the first day of each month, so the HKD figure will differ slightly from the RMB fare. Train numbers and timetables are revised — confirm on 12306 or the MTR high-speed rail site.
What the journey looks like
The train runs on the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link inside Hong Kong at around 200 km/h, then joins the national network at up to 350 km/h. The main intermediate stops are Shenzhen North, Guangzhou South, Changsha South, Wuhan, Zhengzhou East and Shijiazhuang.
West Kowloon serves more than 100 mainland destinations directly — it is the national high-speed network with Hong Kong attached to the end of it.
Daytime or overnight sleeper?
| Daytime service | Overnight sleeper | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs | Daily | Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings |
| Journey time | About 8 to 9 hours | About 10.5 hours |
| Leaves West Kowloon | Late morning | Evening |
| Arrives Beijing West | Evening, same day | Early morning, next day |
| Best for | Travellers who want to arrive the same day and sleep in a hotel | Travellers who want to keep the whole day free and save a hotel night |
| Price | Second class about CNY 1,248 | Seats cheaper; berths considerably dearer than a daytime second class seat |
Both use the same high-speed stock. The sleeper suits a short Hong Kong stay; the daytime train lets you watch the country change from subtropical Guangdong to the North China Plain.
Fares by class
| Class | CNY (12306) | HKD (Hong Kong channels) |
|---|---|---|
| Second class | About 1,248 | About 1,435 |
| First class | About 1,997 | About 2,107 |
| Premium class | — | About 2,370 |
| Business class | About 3,900 | About 4,070 |
Because the two channels price in different currencies, the same seat can look like a different price depending on where you buy it. Neither is "cheaper" in any meaningful sense — the difference is the exchange rate when the fare was set, and HKD fares are refreshed monthly. Pick the channel that suits your payment method. Sleeper berths are priced in RMB and published figures for them differ, check the live fare on 12306.
The border: how "one station, two checks" works
Under the co-location arrangement, Hong Kong and mainland customs, immigration and quarantine all operate inside West Kowloon Station. You clear Hong Kong exit and mainland entry in the same building, in sequence, before you reach the platform; the train then runs to Beijing with no further checks.
- Ground level → B1 ticket hallYou can start as early as 90 minutes before departure. Bring the exact document you booked with, passport for foreign visitors.
- Real-name checking and ticket verification at the B1 gateSelf-service gates plus a staffed counter. Your document is your ticket: the booking is linked to it, so there is nothing to print or collect.
- Security screeningBaggage X-ray and metal detector, as at any mainland station.
- B3 departure concourse, the borderYou complete Hong Kong exit clearance, cross the indoor boundary into the Mainland Port Area within the same hall, and complete mainland entry clearance.
- Wait on B3, board from B4Platforms are one level below. Gates open 15 minutes before departure and close in the last 5 minutes; that cut-off is enforced.
Arriving in Hong Kong
The reverse is mirrored: you board in Beijing with no border check, then at West Kowloon go from the B4 platform to the B2 arrival concourse for mainland exit clearance followed by Hong Kong entry clearance.
Who can board: mainland entry eligibility
Because you clear mainland immigration in Hong Kong, the train will not carry you to Beijing unless you can legally enter mainland China. Ordinary passport holders from 50 countries can currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business and transit, counted from the day after entry; everyone else needs a visa. Hong Kong's own entry rules are separate. Full details are in visa-free entry to China.
Buying the ticket
- Choose your channel: 12306 or a Hong Kong channel12306 sells cross-boundary tickets in RMB; Hong Kong channels sell in HKD. Both open 15 days ahead.
- Register and verify your passport on 12306Use
12306.cn/enor the app. Verification must clear before you can book. - Watch the cut-off timesSales on 12306 for West Kowloon departures close 45 minutes before departure and open from 08:00. Plan around that, not around "buy at the station".
- Book as soon as the window opensThere is one direct daytime train. When it is full there is no alternative departure to fall back on.
- Use the free waitlist if it is sold outIt fills from cancellations; submitting it for both the daytime and the sleeper service is sensible.
- Book with the document you will travel onThe passport number on the booking must match the passport in your hand; this is checked at the B1 gate.
Getting to West Kowloon Station
The station is at 3 Wan Yip Street in West Kowloon, Kowloon, and is open from 06:00 to midnight.
- MTR Austin Station (Tuen Ma Line) is closest, about a 3-minute covered walkway. Kowloon Station (Tung Chung Line, Airport Express) is an 8–10 minute walk through the Elements mall, the route from Hong Kong Island or straight from the airport.
Arriving at Beijing West
- Metro Lines 7 and 9 sit directly beneath the station at B2 level. Line 7 runs east–west; Line 9 runs north–south and connects to Beijing South, which is the station for Shanghai-bound trains.
- Which plaza? As a rule of thumb, gates 1–7 and 10 are nearest the North Plaza (Line 7 side) and gates 8–12 and 11–20 nearest the South Plaza (Line 9 side). Both plazas have taxi ranks, and they are not interchangeable for a pickup.
- Connecting to Daxing Airport is easy: a direct intercity train runs from Beijing West in under half an hour; for Capital Airport, take the bus from the South Plaza.
- Hong Kong-bound departures need more time, guides suggest 90 minutes rather than the usual 60, because the cross-boundary checks add a step.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Hong Kong to Beijing train take?
About 8 to 9 hours on the once-daily daytime service, covering roughly 2,400 km. The sleeper, which runs Friday to Monday evenings, takes about 10.5 hours and arrives early the next morning.
Where do I clear immigration?
Inside West Kowloon Station. You complete Hong Kong exit clearance and mainland entry clearance in the same building, Hong Kong exit on the B3 departure concourse, then a short walk across an indoor boundary into the Mainland Port Area. There is no border stop on the train.
Do I need a Chinese visa to take this train?
You need to be eligible to enter mainland China, because mainland entry clearance happens before you board. Ordinary passport holders from 50 countries can currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days; everyone else needs a visa. Hong Kong's visa-free rules do not cover the mainland leg.
How much is a second class ticket?
About CNY 1,248, or roughly HK$1,435 through Hong Kong channels, which price in Hong Kong dollars and adjust monthly against the exchange rate. First class is about CNY 1,997, business class about CNY 3,900.
How early should I arrive at West Kowloon?
You can begin the real-name check and clearance process up to 90 minutes before departure, and the procedures normally take 30 to 45 minutes. Passport holders and weekend or holiday travellers should allow the full margin, the clearance queue, not the train, is the variable.
Can I leave the station after clearing mainland immigration?
No. Once you have passed mainland entry clearance you are inside the Mainland Port Area and cannot return to Hong Kong. Do not go down to B3 until you are ready to travel.
What if the daytime train is sold out?
Submit the free waitlist on 12306, and consider the overnight sleeper, which runs on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings. You can also travel to Shenzhen or Guangzhou and connect from there onto the mainland network.
