Short answer
Refunds on Chinese train tickets are tiered by how early you cancel: no fee at 8 days or more before departure, 5% between 48 hours and 8 days, 10% between 24 and 48 hours, and 20% inside 24 hours. The minimum charge is ¥2 and the fee is rounded to the nearest ¥0.5. Everything is done in the 12306 app or on 12306.cn; no counter visit is needed if you booked online.
A change (改签) is the cheaper tool and the one most visitors underuse. At 48 hours or more before departure, changing to any train within the booking window is free. Inside 48 hours you can still move to a different train on the same travel date at no cost, and once the train has left you can change to another train later the same day, free, as long as seats exist.
The one hard deadline is 24:00 on your original travel date. Before then, a missed train can usually be rescued with a same-day change. After it, the ticket is dead. Decide early: the gap between a free refund and a 20% fee is only timing.
Refund fees: the official tiers
These percentages come from China Railway's refund notice and the 12306 English help pages. They are calculated from the scheduled departure time on your ticket, not from when you arrive at the station.
| When you refund (before departure) | Refund fee |
|---|---|
| 8 days or more ahead | No fee — full refund |
| More than 48 hours, under 8 days | 5% of the fare |
| 24 to 48 hours | 10% of the fare |
| Under 24 hours | 20% of the fare |
- The minimum fee is ¥2 per ticket. On a cheap intercity hop, the fee cannot fall below that.
- Rounding: the fee is rounded to a half-yuan. Anything under ¥0.25 is dropped, between ¥0.25 and ¥0.75 becomes ¥0.5, and ¥0.75 or more rounds up to the next ¥1.
- The refund goes back to the original payment method — the same Alipay or WeChat Pay account.
- Cheaper replacement: if you change to a cheaper train, the fare difference is refunded, less the normal refund fee on that difference.
When a refund is not possible
The refund route closes in a few situations.
| Situation | Can you get a refund? |
|---|---|
| The train has already departed from your boarding station | No. The refund route generally closes at departure time. In exceptional cases a station can handle a refund within 2 hours of departure with the station chief's approval. |
| You changed the ticket after the train departed | No. Tickets changed after departure cannot then be refunded. |
| Platform ticket (platform access only) | No. Platform tickets are non-refundable. |
| You changed to a date inside the Spring Festival peak season | Refundable, but the fee is a flat 20% regardless of how early you cancel. |
| The railway cancels or disrupts the train | Yes, with no fee. Refunds for a cancelled service are free and are usually handled automatically. |
| You bought a paper ticket or exchanged your e-ticket for one | Yes, but it must be processed at a station ticket window with the ID document used for the purchase. |
Changing a ticket (改签)
A change replaces your ticket with another permitted journey. It is normally much cheaper than refunding and rebooking, and China Railway widened the rules in January 2024 to allow late changes. You get one change per ticket.
| Timing of the change | Moving to | Change fee |
|---|---|---|
| 48 hours or more before departure | Any train within the booking window, or a different destination station | Free |
| Under 48 hours before departure | An earlier date, or another train on the original travel date | Free |
| 24 to 48 hours before departure | A later travel date | 5% of the lower of the two fares |
| Under 24 hours before departure | A later travel date | 15% of the lower of the two fares |
| After departure, before 24:00 the same day | Another train the same day | Free |
| After departure, before 24:00 the same day | The next day or later, within the booking window | 40% of the lower of the two fares |
Two details matter. The fee is charged on the lower of the original and new fares, so downgrading does not avoid it and upgrading does not increase it. And if the new ticket costs more you pay the difference on top.
Changing your destination station
If you want to get off somewhere else rather than travel on a different day, that is a separate operation: a change of destination. It must be requested at least 48 hours before departure, on 12306 or at a designated station window. A ticket whose destination has been changed cannot be changed again, and a ticket that has already been changed cannot have its destination changed. Consigned luggage must be amended too.
If you miss your train
This causes the most confusion, and the rules are more generous than most visitors expect — if you act the same day.
- Do not walk awayMissing the departure does not automatically void the ticket. Taking no action does forfeit it, but a same-day change is available.
- Open the 12306 app or go to a station window immediatelyYou are changing to another train, not refunding. The refund route is already closed.
- Change to a later train on the same calendar dayThis carries no change fee, subject to seats being available and the usual fare-difference rules. This is the cheap rescue.
- Or change to a later date and pay 40%If nothing usable is left today, a change to the next day or later costs 40% of the lower fare — still better than losing the ticket.
- Watch the deadline: 24:00 on the original travel dateThe window does not roll over to the next morning. Request the change on the day of the original ticket or lose it.
The 30-minute mis-purchase window
China Railway added a limited accidental-purchase protection, useful when you book the wrong date at 1 a.m. If you bought through 12306, you can cancel online free of charge provided both conditions hold: cancellation within 30 minutes of successful payment, and departure still more than 4 hours away.
- One order per person per calendar day. The allowance does not stack.
- It does not apply to tickets that have already been changed, or to reservation and waitlist bookings.
- It does not consume anything if you were already inside the normal free-refund window; that is a separate entitlement.
- If you bought at a counter, raise the mistake on the spot, staff will reissue the ticket for you.
Treat this as an emergency correction window, not a general free-cancellation policy.
How to do it in the app
- Log in to 12306 and open your order listBoth the English site and the app expose refund and change actions on the order, for tickets bought online that have not been exchanged for paper.
- Choose Refund or ChangeThe app shows the exact fee before you confirm. Read that number rather than calculating the percentage yourself.
- For a change, pick the new date, train and seat classA rule allowing a change does not create an empty seat, availability on the replacement train is the real constraint.
- Confirm and note the referenceRefunds return to the original payment method; if you booked through a third-party site, that platform handles the refund.
One timing note: 12306 handles queries and refunds around the clock, but ticket sales and changes run from 05:00 to 01:00 the next day, and only to 23:30 on Tuesdays for maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to refund a Chinese train ticket?
It depends entirely on timing: no fee at 8 days or more before departure, 5% between 48 hours and 8 days, 10% between 24 and 48 hours, and 20% inside 24 hours. The minimum fee is ¥2.
Can I change my ticket instead of refunding it?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper. Changes are free at 48 hours or more before departure, and free inside 48 hours when moving to an earlier date or another train the same day. Moving to a later date costs 5% inside 48 hours and 15% inside 24 hours.
What happens if I miss my train?
You can change to another train the same calendar day at no change fee, subject to availability, if you request it before 24:00 on the original travel date. A change to a later date costs 40% of the lower fare. Doing nothing forfeits the ticket.
Can I get a refund after the train has departed?
Generally no, the refund route closes at departure. In exceptional cases a station can process a refund within 2 hours of departure with the station chief's approval. Tickets changed after departure cannot be refunded.
How many times can I change a ticket?
Once per ticket. Because the allowance is single-use, decide what you need before spending it, a same-day rescue after a missed train is often the best use of it.
I booked the wrong date by mistake. Can I cancel for free?
If you booked on 12306 and cancel within 30 minutes of payment while departure is still more than 4 hours away, you can refund online free of charge. It is limited to one order per person per day and does not apply to tickets already changed or to waitlist bookings.
Does the refund go back to my card?
It goes back to the original payment method. If you paid through Alipay or WeChat Pay, it returns there; if you booked through a third-party platform, that platform handles the refund under its own process.
What if the railway cancels my train?
Refunds for a cancelled or disrupted service carry no fee. The railway usually processes them automatically; you can also handle it in the app or at a station window.
