Short answer
Almost everyone flies. Urumqi sits 2,500km from Beijing and the train from the eastern seaboard takes 30 to 40 hours, so flying is the sane choice unless you specifically want the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed line, which is worth doing from Lanzhou or Xi'an and pointless from Shanghai.
Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport is 16km northwest of the centre. The airport bus is the simplest way in at a flat ¥15, the metro is cheapest at ¥6-7, and a taxi runs ¥30-80 depending on traffic. The airport was renamed in March 2025 and used to be called Diwopu, so older guides still use the old name.
The Xinjiang rules catch people out. Urumqi itself, the Grand Bazaar, the museum and Heavenly Lake need no permit. Border zones do, and foreigners are barred outright from the 2km strip along the national boundary. There is also a hotel rule: not every property is licensed to register a foreign passport.
Flying in: the default option
Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport (URC) is the main gateway to the region and one of the twenty busiest airports in China. Domestic connections from the east are frequent and, outside peak season, cheap.
| From | Flight time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing | 4h to 4h30 | Multiple daily flights from both PEK and PKX |
| Xi'an | 3h30 | The most useful connection if you are doing a Silk Road route |
| Chengdu | 3h30 to 4h | Good value, several daily |
| Shanghai | 5h | Long enough that the train makes no sense either |
| Guangzhou | 5h30 | Daily |
| Kashgar | 1h30 | Cheap and frequent, the standard way to continue west |
International flights from Central Asia and Europe land here too. For most foreign visitors the practical pattern is a domestic hop from Beijing, Xi'an or Chengdu after clearing immigration at the first Chinese port of entry.
Getting from the airport to the city
Terminal 4 opened in April 2025 and T1 to T3 closed for upgrading. The metro station is attached to the old terminal zone, not to T4.
| Option | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport bus | ¥15 flat, paid on board | 20 to 60 min | Luggage, no transfers, direct into the centre |
| Metro Line 1 | ¥6-7 | 50 to 75 min | Cheapest, runs 07:40 to 23:30 |
| Taxi | ¥30-80 metered | 20 to 50 min | Arriving late, heavy bags, groups |
| DiDi | Similar to taxi | 20 to 50 min | No language problem, needs Alipay or WeChat Pay |
Airport Express Line 1 runs to Urumqi Railway Station and Line 2 to Urumqi South. Other buses drop at Red Hill and along Youhao Road, every 20 to 30 minutes and timed to flight arrivals. The bus beats the metro for most first-time arrivals because you skip the shuttle-and-transfer shuffle with your bags. Taxis are metered, and peak traffic on the airport expressway can double the journey.
Arriving by train
Urumqi is the western terminus of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed railway. There are two passenger stations and they are not interchangeable.
| Station | What it handles | Getting to the centre |
|---|---|---|
| Urumqi Railway Station (乌鲁木齐站) | High-speed and most long-distance trains. About 8km from the centre. | Metro Line 1, or taxi ¥25-30, 20 to 25 min |
| Urumqi South (乌鲁木齐南站) | Conventional trains from Kashgar, Xining, Lanzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou | Metro Line 1 southbound, or taxi about ¥20-25 |
If your ticket says North Square or South Square, read it before you arrive. The station is large and the two sides are not connected on foot.
| From | Fastest train | Second class |
|---|---|---|
| Lanzhou West | 10h40 to 11h35 high-speed | About ¥551 |
| Xining | 9h40 to 10h30 high-speed | About ¥493 |
| Zhangye West | 7h30 to 8h30 high-speed | About ¥401 |
| Turpan North | 51min to 1h23 high-speed | About ¥33 |
| Hami (Kumul) | 2h35 to 4h | About ¥96 |
| Xi'an | 13h to 16h, high-speed on selected services | ¥477 and up |
| Beijing | About 30h | Hard sleeper from about ¥637 |
| Shanghai | 40h and up | From about ¥680 |
| Kashgar | 12h to 18h | From about ¥283 sleeper |
The honest read: this is a genuine high-speed railway from Lanzhou westward and a long overnight ride from anywhere further east. Lanzhou to Urumqi in 11 hours is a reasonable day on the train with desert views. Beijing to Urumqi in 30 hours is not a substitute for a four-hour flight.
Book through the official 12306 channel or a reputable agent. Passports work as ID, and you need the physical document to collect and board. Ticket checks at Xinjiang stations involve passport inspection and bag X-ray, so add 30 minutes to your buffer.
The Xinjiang rules: what needs a permit
The subject most guides fudge. As of 2026 the main tourist circuit is open to foreigners without a regional permit, and a separate set of border zones is not.
| Destination | Permit needed |
|---|---|
| Urumqi, Grand Bazaar, Xinjiang Regional Museum | No |
| Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) | No |
| Turpan, Kashgar city, Kuqa, Hotan | No |
| Sayram Lake, Nalati, Yining, most of Ili | No |
| Kanas Lake, Altay region | No for the main sites |
| Tashkurgan, Karakoram Highway, Karakul Lake | Yes, Border Management Area Permit |
| Baihaba Village (parts) | Yes, and sometimes closed entirely |
| Bayinbuluk Grassland | Yes, apply 60 to 90 days ahead |
| Sections of the Duku Highway | Yes |
| The 2km strip along any national border | Foreigners are not permitted at all |
The permit is the Border Management Area Travel Permit, issued under Xinjiang's border management regulations. Foreigners apply in person at a Public Security Bureau exit-entry office, in Urumqi or Kashgar or the county you are heading to, with passport, visa page, entry stamp, an itinerary with hotels, and passport photos. Licensed agencies handle it for roughly ¥150-400 per person plus a few days' lead time. It is normally valid one month, and you may need one per border zone.
For Urumqi itself none of this applies. You can travel the capital independently with no paperwork beyond your Chinese entry status.
The transit exemption is disputed
Several operator guides state that the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme does not cover Xinjiang, and that a full visa or visa-free entry is required. At least one lists Urumqi as an eligible port. The sources conflict and the policy has moved repeatedly, so check the National Immigration Administration's current list yourself.
Practical notes on arrival
- Hotel registration. Not every Urumqi hotel is licensed to register foreign guests. Book one that accepts foreign passports. Chains and larger hotels almost always qualify.
- Carry the physical passport. It is your ID for hotel check-in, train tickets, scenic-area entry and every checkpoint. A photocopy is a backup, not a substitute.
- Expect bag scans. Metro entrances, train stations and the Grand Bazaar all screen bags. Routine and orderly, but it takes time.
- Sort out payment before you land. Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay and finish verification at home.
- Xinjiang runs on Beijing time officially. Locals often keep an unofficial two-hour-later clock, so a shop opening at 10:00 may mean 12:00 by the wall clock. Flights and trains run on Beijing time.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Urumqi airport from the city centre?
About 16km northwest. The airport bus takes 20 to 60 minutes at a flat ¥15, the metro 50 to 75 minutes for ¥6-7, and a metered taxi 20 to 50 minutes for ¥30-80 depending on traffic.
Do I need a permit to visit Urumqi?
No. Urumqi, the Grand Bazaar, the regional museum and Heavenly Lake are open to foreign visitors on a normal Chinese entry status with no regional permit. Permits apply to border zones elsewhere in Xinjiang, such as the Karakoram Highway out of Kashgar or the Bayinbuluk grassland.
Can I fly into Urumqi on the 240-hour visa-free transit?
Sources disagree. Several operator guides say Xinjiang is not covered by the transit exemption and that a full visa or visa-free entry is needed, while at least one lists Urumqi as an eligible port. Check the National Immigration Administration's current list before booking, and do not rely on a transit itinerary here.
Is the metro connected to the airport terminal?
Not to Terminal 4. The metro station sits at the older terminal zone, which has been closed for upgrading since April 2025. From T4 take the free Airport MRT shuttle to the old terminal area and transfer to Line 1. The shuttle runs about 07:40 to 23:30.
Which station do trains from Lanzhou and Xi'an use?
High-speed trains use Urumqi Railway Station, the terminus of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed line, about 8km from the centre on Metro Line 1. Urumqi South handles conventional trains, including long-distance services from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Will my hotel accept a foreign passport?
Larger hotels and chain properties in Urumqi almost always can register foreign guests. Smaller guesthouses and budget places may not be licensed to, and will turn you away at the desk. Filter for foreigner-friendly properties when booking, or message the hotel directly.
How long does the border permit take?
Simple cases at a Public Security Bureau office can be same-day. Bayinbuluk and some sensitive zones need 60 to 90 days' notice through a licensed agency. Assume you will need to apply in person at least once, and budget several days.
