Xiamen in 3 Days (2026): Day-by-Day Itinerary for First-Timers

Ferry and campus booking rules, day-by-day timing, and what to drop when you are short on time · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Three days in Xiamen splits into one island day, one university-and-coast day, and one day outside the city. Two bookings decide whether the plan works: the Gulangyu ferry and a timed visitor slot at Xiamen University.

Day 1 Gulangyu and Zhongshan Road. Day 2 Nanputuo Temple, Xiamen University and the Island Ring Road. Day 3 either the Fujian tulou or a slow Jimei morning with the botanical garden. Each day leans on one metro line rather than a chain of taxi rides.

Outside your hotel a day costs metro fares, one or two attraction tickets and meals — tens of yuan rather than hundreds. Boat seats and campus slots both vanish days ahead on weekends and public holidays.

The three days at a glance

DayMorningAfternoonEvening
1 Ferry from the Xiamen International Cruise Center at Dongdu to Sanqiutian Wharf, from about 07:10 Gulangyu on foot: Longtou Road, Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden Return ferry, then Zhongshan Road (Line 1, Zhenhai Road)
2 Nanputuo Temple, free entry Xiamen University on a booked slot, then Shapowei and the Island Ring Road Zengcuoan food alleys, or the night ferry from Lundu Wharf
3 Tulou day trip towards Nanjing County, or Line 1 to Jimei School Village Tulou clusters and Yunshui Yao, or Wanshi Botanical Garden Dinner around Zhongshan Park or the university district

Day 1: Gulangyu, done properly

Gulangyu has no cars, so everything is walked, and the interesting parts sit on two hills rather than along one street.

Booking the ferry

Foreign visitors take the daytime tourist route from the Xiamen International Cruise Center at Dongdu. Sailings leave roughly every 20 minutes from around 07:10, with the last departures in the late afternoon, later in summer. The crossing takes 5 to 20 minutes.

Standard round trips to Sanqiutian Wharf are quoted at ¥35. Neicuo'ao Wharf and the air-conditioned boats cost more, and the Songgu Wharf route is listed around ¥30. Wharf pairings move with the season, so check the official channel when you book.

On the island

Walk up to Sunlight Rock for the view over the consulate roofs and the harbour, then drop to Shuzhuang Garden and its piano collection. The consulate lanes between them are what people photograph; Longtou Road is the commercial spine. Take one of the first two boats and you beat the tour groups.

Evening

Zhongshan Road is the pedestrian street five minutes from Line 1's Zhenhai Road station. The night ferry from Lundu Wharf adds the island lights for the price of a boat ticket.

Day 2: Nanputuo, Xiamen University and the coast

Nanputuo Temple sits at the foot of the hill beside the university, free to enter, with a vegetarian restaurant that fills at lunch. Arrive at opening.

Xiamen University's Siming campus is a timed-entry site. Visitors book through the official Xiamen University Visitor Reservation System on WeChat. No ticket is charged, one account books for up to five people, and reports put the booking window at one to three days ahead. Foreign visitors register a passport and enter with the original document. Visitor hours are limited and posted inside the system, so read them while booking rather than at the gate.

Shapowei, a working harbour turned small art and coffee quarter, is a short walk and a good lunch stop.

The afternoon belongs to the Island Ring Road, the coastal road with a continuous bike lane. Shared bikes are rented through the Alipay and WeChat mini programs, and a taxi covers the same stretch when the heat wins. Zengcuoan is the food alley cluster on the way. Hulishan Fortress charges a small entry fee — check the official channel for hours.

Day 3: two ways to leave the island

Pick one. Doing both produces a day spent sitting in traffic.

OptionTravel time each wayBest forWatch out for
Fujian tulou, Nanjing County 2.5–3 hours by road Tianluokeng's round clan buildings and Yunshui Yao Last connections back fill early; a shared day trip removes the guesswork
Jimei School Village plus Wanshi Botanical Garden Line 1 direct, under an hour A day with no bookings and no long drives Spread-out sights and a fair amount of walking

Line 1 has a station at Jimei School Village, and the stretch across the water into Jimei is the one locals ride for the view. Wanshi Botanical Garden sits behind Zhongshan Park, also on Line 1.

The tulou are a full day, not half of one. Our Fujian tulou guide covers which clusters to choose and how to get there.

The ferry touts at the pier are not the ferry People outside the terminal offer "fast boats" and "skip-the-queue" tickets at a markup. Buy at the official window or the official WeChat channel. A forged ticket is not tied to your passport and does not board.

The mistakes that cost people a day

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book the Gulangyu ferry in advance?

On weekdays outside holidays you can usually buy at the pier, but weekends and public holidays sell out early and mid-morning departures go first. Book through the official ferry WeChat channel a few days ahead, and carry the passport you booked with.

How much is the ferry to Gulangyu?

The standard tourist route from the Xiamen International Cruise Center at Dongdu to Sanqiutian Wharf is quoted at ¥35 round trip. The Neicuo'ao Wharf route and the air-conditioned boats cost more. Fares change, so check the official channel when you book.

Can I visit Xiamen University without a reservation?

No. Entry to the Siming campus is by timed visitor reservation only, through the official Xiamen University Visitor Reservation System on WeChat. Slots open roughly one to three days ahead, one account books for up to five people, and you enter with the original passport you registered.

Is three days in Xiamen enough?

For Gulangyu, the university and coast, and one trip out of town, yes. It is tight for adding the Fujian tulou, two and a half to three hours each way, and leaves no room for Quanzhou or the offshore islands.

When is the worst time to visit Xiamen?

The first week of October and Lunar New Year week are the busiest of the year, with ferry seats and campus slots disappearing days ahead. July to September is typhoon season, when a storm can suspend ferries and flights with little warning.

Do I need a guide for the Fujian tulou?

No, but a guided or shared day trip saves the logistics. The buildings sit in Nanjing County, two and a half to three hours from Xiamen by road, and the last connections back fill early.
