Short answer
Two things need booking before you fly. The Gulangyu ferry is real-name, sells from 15 days ahead, costs about ¥35 round trip and holds one ticket per document per day. Xiamen University admits visitors only by reservation, released about three days ahead. Everything else can be decided on the day.
The island itself is the main event and deserves a full day, not an afternoon. Walking it is free; the individual sights charge, usually through a five-attraction combo covering Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, Haoyue Garden, the Organ Museum and the calligraphy museum, quoted at roughly ¥90–100 against more than ¥140 bought separately.
On the mainland, Nanputuo Temple is free, generally opens 08:00–18:00, and normally asks for a same-day reservation. The walkable old town, Shapowei, the beaches and the coastal road cost nothing and take the rest of your time.

Gulangyu: the one that needs a plan
The car-free island is a UNESCO site and the reason most people come to Xiamen, which is exactly why the ferry needs organising. During the day tourists board only from the Xiamen International Cruise Center at Dongdu, on metro Line 2. The Lundu terminal in the old town serves residents by day and the late crossings after about 17:50, so getting that wrong costs you an hour.
Tickets are real-name: the passport used at booking is checked at the gate, sales open 15 days ahead, and one document holds one ticket per day. Around holidays the tourist sailings sell out days in advance. The full set of boat rules is in the Gulangyu guide.
On the island, the two sights that justify the combo are Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden. Sunlight Rock is a stepped climb to the island's high point with the whole bay below it, and it is the stop where timing matters most — the path is narrow and it fills once the tour boats land. Shuzhuang Garden is a Fujian garden built to frame the sea, with the piano museum attached, and it holds up at any hour. The Organ Museum and the calligraphy museum fill the middle of the day.
Nanputuo Temple and Wulao Peak
Nanputuo is a working Buddhist temple, founded in the Tang dynasty and still busy with worshippers rather than tourists. Entry is free. The temple normally asks for a free reservation through its official channel instead of an on-site queue, and the usual opening window is 08:00 to 18:00, with admission ending at closing time.
Behind the halls, the path up Wulao Peak climbs through the rock and gives the best free view in the city: the temple roofs, the university campus and the bay. Allow about an hour up at a steady pace. Early morning is cooler and far quieter.
Metro Line 1, Hubin East Road station, is the closest stop. Shapowei and the university are both within a fifteen-minute walk.
Xiamen University: reservation only
The campus next to the temple is a genuine attraction — palm-lined avenues, red-tiled roofs, lakes and the beach edge — and it is also a working university with a daily visitor cap. Entry runs on reservations released about three days ahead, reported at 08:00, 12:00 and 16:00, with a lottery for some periods and time-limited entry windows once you are inside.
Foreign visitors book with a passport and enter through the manual verification channel at the visitor gate with the original document, not a photo. The schedule and the quota change with the academic calendar, so check the official booking page before the day you plan to go.
The free half of the city
Shapowei
A small fishing harbour turned studio and café district, fifteen minutes on foot from Nanputuo. Late afternoon is when it works: the boats come back, the light drops and the seafood stalls set up. No ticket, no booking.
Zhongshan Road and the old town
The arcade streets and lane network of the old town, with Line 1 at Zhenhai Road at one end and the Lundu ferry hall at the other. Free, and at its best after about 17:00 when the food stalls open. Two hours is enough; an entire afternoon is not.
Huandao Road, Baicheng and the beaches
The coastal ring road has a continuous bike lane and the best sunset in the city. Shared bikes are rented through the Alipay or WeChat mini programs and parking is restricted to marked zones. Baicheng Beach is the closest stretch to the old town; ride on through Zengcuoan and Huangcuo for the quieter water. No metro line runs along the coast, so this is a taxi or bike day.
Wanshi Botanical Garden
On the coast road, half a day, and worth it for the rainforest section alone, which stays cool and misty on a hot afternoon. It is a ticketed site rather than a free park — check the official channel for the current price and opening hours before setting out, as both change seasonally.
Jimei School Village
Tan Kah Kee's waterfront campus and memorial buildings across the bay, reached on Line 1. The ride itself is part of it: between Gaoqi and Jimei the train crosses open water on a bridge. Walking the area is free; individual memorial halls are ticketed, and their current rules are on the official channel.
Timing a day around the crowds, not the map
- Give Gulangyu the first boat and the whole daySunlight Rock and the lanes are calm before mid-morning. The same streets are a queue by 11:00 during holidays.
- Put Nanputuo and the university on a separate half dayThey sit next to each other, and both reward an early start. Doing them the same morning as Gulangyu means doing none of them properly.
- Keep Shapowei for late afternoonIt is a harbour first. The atmosphere arrives with the returning boats, not at noon.
- Finish on the coast roadThe sunset from Huandao Road is the one free sight in the city that people plan around, and it is on the way back from nothing else, so treat it as the last stop.
The sequence that works is in the two-day Xiamen itinerary, which builds the days around the ferry slot you manage to book.
What to skip, and why
- Zhongshan Road as an afternoon plan. It is a pedestrian shopping street with good eating in the lanes behind it. Thirty to sixty minutes covers it; the old town lanes matter more.
- Sunlight Rock at midday in summer. The climb is steps, the summit area is small and shade is limited. Early or not at all.
- The Fujian Tulou as a half day. The roundhouses people visit from Xiamen are hours away by road. It is a full day or it is not worth doing — see the Fujian Tulou guide.
- Gulangyu as a lunch stop. Harbour-side seafood restaurants on the island charge visitor prices. Eat properly on the mainland and snack on the island.
- Any paid "island view" boat trip instead of the ferry. The ferry is the crossing; the extra loops add time and cost without adding a sight.
Frequently asked questions
Which Xiamen attractions need booking in advance?
Two, and both are capped. The Gulangyu ferry is real-name, sells from 15 days ahead and one document holds one ticket per day. Xiamen University admits visitors by reservation only, released about three days ahead. Nanputuo Temple is free but normally asks for a same-day reservation through its official channel.
How much is the Gulangyu ferry and the island ticket?
The ferry is reported at ¥35 round trip per adult. On the island, current listings quote a five-attraction combo covering Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, Haoyue Garden, the Organ Museum and the calligraphy museum at roughly ¥90–100, against more than ¥140 if the sights are bought separately. Confirm both at the official ticketing counter, as the price and the composition of the combo change.
How long do the Xiamen sights take?
Gulangyu is a full day including the boat. Nanputuo Temple with the climb behind it takes two to three hours. Xiamen University is a 90-minute walk. The botanical garden is half a day. Shapowei, Zhongshan Road and the coastal road are each two to three hours at an easy pace.
When is the best time of day to visit Gulangyu?
The first sailings. Sunlight Rock and the lanes are calm early, the tour groups build from mid-morning, and the light on the colonial villas is best before about 10:00. Staying overnight is the other way to get the island quiet, and hotel guests get priority on ferry tickets.
Do I need a reservation for Xiamen University?
Yes. Visitor entry runs on reservations released about three days ahead, reported at 08:00, 12:00 and 16:00, with a daily visitor quota and a lottery in some periods. Foreign visitors book with a passport and enter through the manual verification channel at the visitor gate. The exact schedule changes, so check the official booking page before the day.
Is Nanputuo Temple free to visit?
Entry is free, and the temple normally asks visitors to reserve a free slot through its official channel or mini program rather than joining an on-site queue. Opening hours are generally reported as 08:00 to 18:00. The climb up Wulao Peak behind the temple is included and takes about an hour up.
Which Xiamen attractions are not worth it?
There is little outright waste, but some stops are oversold. Zhongshan Road is a 30-minute walk rather than an afternoon. Sunlight Rock is worth the climb early and frustrating at midday in summer. The Fujian Tulou is a full day of driving, not a half-day add-on, so skip it if the trip is two nights.
Can I see Xiamen's main sights without the metro?
Mostly yes, because the tourist core is compact. Line 1 covers the old town at Zhenhai Road, the university and temple at Hubin East Road, and Jimei at the far end. Line 2 reaches the International Cruise Center for the daytime Gulangyu ferry. The coastal Island Ring Road has no metro line and needs a taxi, a bus or a shared bike.
