Short answer
Two windows work best: late March to mid-April and mid-October to late November. Both are mild and mostly dry, and both fall outside the typhoon season and the week-long national holidays that dominate Chinese travel.
Avoid July to September, the typhoon window. A near miss still shuts the Gulangyu ferries and delays flights.
Crowds follow a separate calendar. In 2026 the Mid-Autumn holiday on 25–27 September sits days before National Day on 1–7 October, which makes that fortnight the busiest of the year in Fujian.
Month by month
Daytime highs move from about 17°C in January to about 34°C at the peak of summer.
| Month | Daytime feel | What it means on the ground |
|---|---|---|
| January | Around 17°C, damp | Thin crowds, low prices, cold indoors |
| February | Cool, wet spells | Spring Festival rush in the second half |
| March | Mild, warming | Best value before Qingming travel |
| April | Warm, some showers | Good walking weather; Qingming 4–6 April is a spike |
| May | Humid, plum rain starts | Labour Day 1–5 May is a national spike |
| June | Hot, sticky, showery | Rain rarely cancels a day; sea views go grey |
| July | 34°C, humid | Peak heat, typhoon season opens |
| August | Hot, storm risk highest | Most likely to disrupt a fixed plan |
| September | Hot, storms easing late | Mid-Autumn 25–27 September, then October |
| October | Clear, dry, comfortable | Best weather; 1–7 October is the busiest week |
| November | Mild and sunny | The sweet spot: good light, low crowds |
| December | Cool, mostly dry | Quiet and cheap, sunset around 5:30pm |
Late March to mid-April: spring
This is the season locals recommend first. Days are mild, humidity has not yet become the story, and walking the old town or the island paths is pleasant for hours rather than minutes. Rain arrives as passing showers, so carry a shell. The Qingming holiday runs 4–6 April 2026 and spring weekends push up demand on the tulou route.
May and June: the plum rain
Late spring in southeast China brings the plum rain, a long humid stretch of drizzle rather than a storm. Xiamen gets the milder version: grey skies, climbing humidity, and a coastline that photographs badly.
The trade-off is real: this is one of the cheapest comfortable periods, the sights are empty, and indoor stops lose nothing. If your trip is built on blue-sea photographs, come later.
July to September: heat and typhoons
Peak summer brings daytime highs around 34°C with humidity that pushes the "feels like" temperature higher. Locals reorganise their day: outdoors early, long lunch indoors, back out in the evening.
The bigger issue is typhoon season. A direct hit is not the norm, and you do not need one — storms passing nearby suspend the Gulangyu ferries, delay flights from Xiamen Gaoqi airport and close the beaches, with two or three days of heavy rain attached.
October and November: the best light
Autumn dries the air, clears the sky and drops the humidity. October and November are consistently named the best months in Xiamen, with daytime highs in the low to high 20s and far less rain than spring. The city itinerary works at its best here.
The exception is the first week. National Day Golden Week runs 1–7 October 2026 and Mid-Autumn lands on 25–27 September, so those two weeks form one continuous surge. From about 8 October the city empties and stays that way.
December to February: quiet and mild
Winter is mild by Chinese standards. January daytime highs sit around 17°C, frost is rare and the crowds are gone, which makes it the cheapest comfortable stretch outside Spring Festival week. Buildings in southern China are not heated, so interiors feel colder than the forecast, and Spring Festival (15–23 February 2026) makes transport difficult for days on either side.
2026 holiday dates to plan around
| Holiday | 2026 dates | Effect in Xiamen |
|---|---|---|
| New Year | 1–3 January | Short break, moderate demand |
| Spring Festival | Break 15–23 February | Nine days off, heaviest winter travel |
| Qingming | 4–6 April | Good weather plus a travel bump |
| Labour Day | 1–5 May | Five days, peak ferry and rail demand |
| Dragon Boat | 19–21 June | Inside the wet season, less disruptive |
| Mid-Autumn | 25–27 September | Runs into National Day — treat as one surge |
| National Day | 1–7 October | Busiest week for ferries, trains and hotels |

What to pack
Spring and autumn need light layers and a packable rain shell. Summer needs breathable clothing, sun protection and a second pair of shoes. Winter needs a warm mid-layer and a windproof jacket. Comfortable walking shoes matter year-round — Xiamen is a city of hills.
Booking timing
- Pick the shoulder, not the peakMid-April and mid-to-late October are the weeks where good weather and low crowds overlap. Move your dates by seven days and you pay less for a better trip.
- Watch the rail presale windowChina Railway releases tickets a limited number of days ahead of departure. Check the current period in the 12306 app and set a reminder for the morning it opens near a holiday.
- Book the Gulangyu ferry separatelyIt runs on its own quota, not the rail system. Use the official Xiamen Ferry Company channel with several days of lead time in a holiday week.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating "best time" as only about weather. The crowd calendar changes a trip more than three degrees of temperature does.
- Booking 1–7 October because the weather is good. It is the worst week of the year for ferries, trains and prices.
- Assuming September is safe. Typhoon season runs through the month, and 2026 adds Mid-Autumn at the end of it.
- Leaving the ferry to chance in high season. The island has a daily cap: no booking, no crossing. The Fujian Tulou guide covers the routes most exposed to rain.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Xiamen?
Late March to mid-April and mid-October to late November. Both are mild and mostly dry, and both fall outside the typhoon window and the week-long national holidays. October and November have the more reliable sky.
When is typhoon season in Xiamen?
July to September, with August the riskiest month. The indirect effects are the common problem: suspended Gulangyu ferries, delayed flights and two or three days of heavy rain.
When are the Chinese public holidays in 2026?
New Year 1 to 3 January, Spring Festival 15 to 23 February, Qingming 4 to 6 April, Labour Day 1 to 5 May, Dragon Boat 19 to 21 June, Mid-Autumn 25 to 27 September and National Day 1 to 7 October. The schedule is republished each year, so confirm the dates.
Should I avoid National Day Golden Week in Xiamen?
Yes if you can. One to seven October 2026 is a seven-day national break, and in 2026 it follows the Mid-Autumn holiday on 25 to 27 September. Ferries, trains and hotels are at their busiest and most expensive.
What is the plum rain season and does it affect Xiamen?
It is the humid, drizzly stretch that settles over southeast China in late spring, reaching Xiamen around May and June. Expect grey skies and short downpours rather than an all-day washout.
What should I pack for Xiamen?
Light layers and a packable rain shell in spring and autumn, breathable clothing and a second pair of shoes in summer, and a warm mid-layer plus a windproof jacket in winter. Unheated buildings make January feel colder than the forecast.
