Short answer
Three day trips from Xiamen pay off: Gulangyu by ferry, Quanzhou by high-speed rail, and the Fujian Tulou if you accept a long day. The rest of the usual list either takes four hours of driving each way or repeats what is already in the city.
Travel time decides everything. Quanzhou is 30 to 60 minutes by train. Nanjing County is about 50 minutes by train plus a road transfer; Yongding is 2 to 2.5 hours by road. Gulangyu is a short ferry ride on a booking system with a daily visitor cap.
Two rules remove most of the friction: carry the passport you booked with, and book through official channels — 12306 for rail, the Xiamen Ferry Company channel for Gulangyu.
Which day trips are worth the time
| Day trip | Time each way | Best for | Independent or tour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gulangyu Island | 5–20 min ferry | Half day: colonial villas, no cars | Independent, book the ferry |
| Quanzhou | 30–60 min train | Full day: temples, West Street | Independent |
| Nanjing County tulou | ~50 min train + under 1 h road | Long day: Hakka earth buildings | Driver or tour for the last leg |
| Yongding tulou | 2–2.5 h road | Long day: the postcard cluster | Tour or private driver |
| Zhangzhou | Under an hour by train | Half day: old streets, few tour groups | Independent |
| Jimei | 30–45 min on Metro Line 1 | Half day: Tan Kah Kee architecture | Independent |
| Kinmen | Ferry from Wutong Wharf | Not a day trip for most passports | Permit required |
Gulangyu: the easy half day, and the wharf that trips people up
Gulangyu has no cars, a loop of colonial-era villas and a hilltop looking back at the Xiamen skyline. Walking the island is free; individual gardens and museums charge small entry fees. Half a day covers it.
The ferry is where people lose hours. Tourist sailings leave from Xiagu Wharf at the Xiamen International Cruise Terminal, with Songgu Wharf on the Haicang side second. Lundu Wharf is mainly for residents and evening sailings.
| Route | Round trip | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Xiagu Wharf, standard | ¥35 | Visitors, daytime sailings |
| Xiagu Wharf, air-conditioned cabin | ¥50–80 | Visitors who want a seat |
| Songgu Wharf | ¥30 | Visitors staying in Haicang |
| Lundu Wharf, evening sailings | Check the official channel | Residents and night crossings |
Fares, sailing times and the daily cap change by season, so trust the official booking channel for your date. Our Gulangyu guide covers the walking route and which villas to skip.
Quanzhou by high-speed rail
Quanzhou was one of the great ports of the Maritime Silk Road, and the old city walks in a day. About 80 pairs of trains run from Xiamen daily, second-class seats cost roughly ¥25–35, and the ride takes 30 to 60 minutes.
Start at Kaiyuan Temple with its twin stone pagodas, walk West Street for the food, then add the Guandi Temple or the Maritime Museum. Two practical notes: Quanzhou Station sits north of the old town, so plan a taxi or bus for the last stretch, and check which station your train uses. Many Chinese museums close on Mondays.
The Fujian Tulou: worth it, plan a long day
The tulou are circular Hakka earth buildings, some housing dozens of families, spread across two counties inland from Xiamen. People still live in many of them, so walk in as a guest of a village rather than an audience at a set.
- Nanjing County — Yunshuiyao village and the Tianluokeng group, around 50 minutes by train plus under an hour by road. About 22 trains a day from Xiamen.
- Yongding — Hongkeng and the postcard buildings, two to 2.5 hours by road each way.
- Entry tickets are charged per cluster, and prices vary by site and season. Check the official channel for the cluster you are visiting.
If the tulou matter more than Xiamen itself, an overnight in Yunshuiyao beats a rushed day trip — the villages are quiet at dawn. See the Fujian Tulou guide for the cluster comparison.
Half days: Zhangzhou and Jimei
Zhangzhou is a short high-speed hop south into a lived-in old town rather than a restored attraction; check times on the official 12306 app. Jimei sits inside Xiamen's metro network, where Line 1 crosses the sea to Tan Kah Kee's school village and its waterfront park.
Kinmen is not a day trip
The ferry from Wutong Wharf takes under an hour, which makes Kinmen look like an easy add-on. It is not: Kinmen is administered by Taiwan, and a mainland visa alone does not get you on the boat.
How to book
- Trains: use 12306The official China Railway app has an English interface and accepts foreign passports. Arrive 30 to 40 minutes early and scan the passport at the gate.
- Gulangyu ferry: use the official channelXiamen Ferry Company website or its WeChat and Alipay mini-programs. Book two to three days ahead normally, a week or more around National Day and Spring Festival.
- Metro and attractions: pay as you goXiamen metro fares run about ¥2–7 per journey. Buy scenic-area tickets at the gate, not from a street reseller.
Mistakes to avoid
- Combining the tulou with Gulangyu. Opposite directions, neither short.
- Arriving at the wrong wharf. Tourist ferries leave from Xiagu and Songgu wharves, not Lundu Wharf.
- Not checking the station on the ticket. Xiamen has more than one rail station and the city is long.
- Leaving the tulou for your last day. Put it mid-trip with slack behind it, because it is the trip most likely to run long.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy the Gulangyu ferry ticket at the wharf on the day?
Same-day tickets are released, but queues at the tourist wharves run for hours in peak season and the island has a daily visitor cap. Book through the official Xiamen Ferry Company channel a few days ahead.
Which wharf do tourists use for Gulangyu?
Xiagu Wharf at the Xiamen International Cruise Terminal, with Songgu Wharf on the Haicang side second. Lundu Wharf is mainly for residents and evening sailings, and is where visitors queue by mistake.
Is the Fujian Tulou possible as a day trip from Xiamen?
Yes, as a long day rather than a relaxed one. Nanjing County is roughly 50 minutes by train plus under an hour by road, so a 07:00 start gets you back in the evening.
Do I need a tour to see the tulou?
No, but the last leg is the problem: trains stop in the county town, and the villages need a taxi, a private driver or a local shuttle. Group tours bundle that transport with entry.
Do I need my passport for trains inside China?
Yes. Your passport is your ticket on domestic high-speed rail, so book with it on 12306 and scan it at the gate instead of a paper ticket.
Is Quanzhou worth a day trip, or should I stay overnight?
A day trip covers the old city comfortably at 30 to 60 minutes each way. Stay overnight for West Street after dark and temples without crowds.
Can I visit Kinmen from Xiamen?
Only if you are eligible to enter Taiwan, which most foreign passports on a mainland visa are not. The ferry leaves from Wutong Wharf, but check your own visa situation first.
