Short answer
For a first visit of two or three days, stay inside the Ming wall within walking distance of the Bell Tower, the South Gate and the Muslim Quarter. The wall, the food lanes and both towers are on foot from there, and Metro Line 2 puts Xi'an North and the museum district 20 to 35 minutes away.
Two areas beat it for specific trips. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Qujiang district suit families and longer stays, with bigger rooms, parks and the Tang night streets outside the door. Xi'an North is the practical base for an early train.
Expect around ¥150-300 for a simple double inside the wall, ¥250-500 for a comfortable mid-range hotel, and ¥700 upward for the international brands. Hotels that accept foreign guests register your passport with the police on arrival; a minority of small budget places cannot host foreign guests at all, so confirm before paying.
The areas at a glance
| Area | Feel | Best for | Metro and distances | Typical room |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bell Tower and South Gate (inside the wall) | Old-city bustle, walkable, cafes in the lanes | First visits and short trips | Lines 2 and 6 at Bell Tower; wall and food lanes 5 to 20 minutes on foot | ¥150-500 |
| Muslim Quarter and Beiyuanmen | Food-led, tight lanes, loud until late | Food-first and budget trips | 10 minutes on foot to Bell Tower station, Line 2 | ¥150-400 |
| Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Qujiang | Modern, green, wide roads, upmarket | Families, second visits, longer stays | Line 4; 25 to 40 minutes to the wall | ¥300-700 |
| Xiaozhai and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda | Student and shopping district, cheap to eat | Budget stays and museum days | Lines 2 and 3; Shaanxi History Museum a short walk | ¥180-450 |
| Xi'an station and Xi'an North | Functional, transport-first, little around either | Early departures and overnight trains | Line 2 to Xi'an North, 12 km from the old city; Line 4 to Xi'an station | ¥150-350 |
| High-tech Zone (Gaoxin) | New commercial district, chain hotels, quiet | Work trips and stays of a week or more | Lines 3 and 6; 20 to 30 minutes to Bell Tower | ¥250-600 |
| Lintong (Terracotta Army side) | Low-rise district town, 40 km east, no nightlife | One night before an early pits visit | Line 9, about an hour from the wall; Huaqing Palace by the station | ¥150-350 |
Two rules cut the choice down. Stay within 500 m of a Line 2, 3 or 4 station, and check the map: a hotel described as "near the Bell Tower" can be 2 km away in a Chinese listing.
What each area is like
Bell Tower and South Gate
The most convenient base in the city. The South Gate is the main entry point for the wall loop, the Drum Tower and the food lanes are a short walk north, and the lanes behind the Bell Tower hold noodle shops, bakeries and small bars. Rooms are smaller than in the new districts, and street-facing windows look onto traffic that runs late.
Muslim Quarter and Beiyuanmen
A working Hui neighbourhood of food lanes, stalls and the Great Mosque, busiest from 18:00 to 21:00. The courtyards two or three lanes east of Beiyuanmen hold small hotels that are quiet despite the location. Noise is the trade-off, along with lanes too narrow for a taxi.
Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Qujiang
The modern face of Xi'an: broad avenues, parkland around the Tang gardens, malls along Ci'en Road and hotels built for families. The Grand Tang Mall light street runs south from the pagoda and is ten minutes on foot. The cost is distance, 25 to 40 minutes to the old city with a change between Lines 4 and 2.
Xiaozhai and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda
A university district with two metro lines crossing under it and the best cheap eating on the south side. The Shaanxi History Museum sits on Xiaozhai East Road, so a reserved morning slot is a five-minute walk rather than a commute. The streets are full of students, not tour groups.
Xi'an station and Xi'an North
Both are transport infrastructure first and neighbourhoods second. Xi'an North, 12 km north on Line 2, is where the high-speed trains leave from; nearby hotels are bland and cheap, and worth it before an early departure. The older Xi'an station, outside the north wall, still handles most overnight trains.
High-tech Zone (Gaoxin)
Office towers, chain hotels, international restaurants and a business-hotel rhythm: reliable rooms, gyms, quiet streets after dark. Good for a week of work, less good for three days of sightseeing, since every wall and pagoda visit starts with a 20 to 30 minute metro ride.
Lintong
The district town nearest the Terracotta Army, 40 km east on Metro Line 9. Staying here saves the 1.5 hour morning journey and puts Huaqing Palace beside your stop, but there is little to do after dinner and the city still costs an hour. It works as one night, not as a main base.
What rooms cost
| Type | Typical nightly rate | What that buys |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorm bed | ¥60-120 | A bed in a dorm, shared bathroom, usually English-speaking staff |
| Budget double, off the main streets | ¥150-300 | A private room with a bathroom, often small and facing a courtyard |
| Mid-range chain hotel | ¥250-500 | Reliable rooms, breakfast, a metro station within walking distance |
| Four-star or boutique | ¥500-900 | Larger rooms, a gym, and usually Qujiang or Gaoxin rather than the old lanes |
| International five-star | ¥800-1,500 and up | Full facilities, English service, airport transfers, in Qujiang or Gaoxin |
Rates swing hard with the season. The first week of October, Spring Festival and the May holiday can double a room that costs ¥300 in a quiet week. Book seven to ten days ahead in the shoulder months, and much earlier for holidays.
Foreign guests and registration
Hotels that accept foreign guests register your passport with the local public security office at check-in, a legal requirement and part of the service. Most mid-range and upmarket hotels and all the international chains do it. Some small guesthouses are not registered to host foreign visitors, and a booking made on a platform that never asked about nationality can be refused at the desk.
Booking notes that matter
- Save the address in Chinese. Drivers, and sometimes the hotel itself, work from the Chinese name rather than the English listing.
- Ask which way the room faces. Old-city rooms on the main roads are noisy until late; internal-courtyard rooms cost less and sleep better.
- Breakfast is usually extra. A local breakfast of noodles or soup costs
¥10-20in the lanes and beats most hotel buffets. - Expect a deposit taken by card or cash at check-in and returned at check-out, which is easier with Alipay or WeChat Pay already working.
- Check the line, not just the distance. A hotel 1.5 km from a Line 2 station beats one 400 m from a line needing two changes.
Choosing by trip type
| Trip | Best base | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First visit, two or three days | Bell Tower or South Gate | Wall, towers and food lanes on foot |
| Family with children | Big Wild Goose Pagoda or Qujiang | Larger rooms, parks, the light street and fountains nearby |
| Early train to Luoyang or Pingyao | Xi'an North | Minutes from the platform instead of an hour in the dark |
| Backpacker or long budget stay | Muslim Quarter or Xiaozhai | Cheap food at all hours, hostels, good metro |
| Working stay of a week or more | High-tech Zone | Chain hotels, gyms, restaurants, quiet streets |
| Two Lintong days | Lintong for one night | The pits and Huaqing Palace are both local |
Frequently asked questions
Where do most foreign visitors stay in Xi'an?
Inside the Ming wall, within a few minutes of the Bell Tower or the South Gate. It is the only area where the main sights, the food and the metro are all on foot, and it costs less than the modern districts. The Muslim Quarter lanes just north of it are the second most popular choice.
Is the Muslim Quarter a good place to stay?
Yes, if the noise is acceptable. The food is the best in the city and available until late, and courtyard hotels a lane or two back from Beiyuanmen are surprisingly quiet. Street-facing rooms are loud until around 22:00, and taxis cannot reach the door.
Is it better to stay near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda?
For families, yes, and for anyone staying four nights or more. Rooms are larger, the streets are quieter at night, and the Tang night streets are a walk away. The trade-off is 25 to 40 minutes each way to the wall and the Muslim Quarter.
How much does a hotel in Xi'an cost per night?
Roughly ¥60-120 for a hostel dorm bed, ¥150-300 for a simple private double, ¥250-500 for a comfortable mid-range hotel, and ¥800 and up for an international five-star. Holiday weeks can double the mid-range rates.
Will every hotel accept foreign guests?
No. Mid-range and upmarket hotels and the international chains generally do, and they register your passport with the police at check-in. Some small guesthouses are not registered to host foreign visitors, so message the property before booking and keep the reply.
Where should I stay for an early Terracotta Army visit?
Inside the wall is fine. Line 9 is reached through Line 1, and the full journey is about 1.5 hours door to gate. Lintong saves the morning only if the next day is also spent out there, and it leaves you an hour from the wall and the night streets.
Which area is quietest at night?
Qujiang and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda district, then the High-tech Zone. The old city is busy until around 22:00 and the Muslim Quarter later than that. Inside the wall, a courtyard room in the lanes behind the Bell Tower is the quiet compromise.
