Getting to Zhangjiajie from the Airport and Railway Stations (2026)

Bus No. 4, the metered taxi run, the coach to Wulingyuan, and the last-leg trap nobody warns you about · Updated September 2026

Short answer

There is no metro in Zhangjiajie and no airport express train. The city has no urban rail, so every arrival ends in a bus, a taxi or a ride-hailing car. All three are cheap: the airport sits about 5 km from the centre, the high-speed station about 8.5 km out.

From Hehua airport (DYG), city bus No. 4 costs ¥2 and takes 30–50 minutes; a metered taxi takes 11–15 minutes for roughly ¥20–30 by day. From Zhangjiajie West, a direct coach to Wulingyuan costs around ¥12–13 and runs about 40 minutes.

The trap is the clock. Coaches to Wulingyuan finish in the late afternoon, around 17:00, and the airport city bus stops in the evening. Land late and the options narrow to a taxi or a night in the city.

Three arrival points, three different jobs

Zhangjiajie city is a transport hub. The scenery is somewhere else, and the distance between the two is what catches people out.

Arrival pointWhat it servesTo the city centreTo the national park
Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站)All high-speed G and D trains~8.5 km, about 15 min~25–30 km; direct coach from the station forecourt
Zhangjiajie station (张家界站)Slow conventional trains onlyDowntown, walkable to the Tianmen cableway base~30 km; coach from the central bus station next door
Hehua airport (DYG)Domestic and some international flights~4.5–5 km, 11–15 min by taxi~35 km; change in the city, or a direct taxi for about ¥100–120

Book high-speed trains to Zhangjiajie West; a ticket to the downtown station means a slow ride.

From Hehua airport (DYG) to the city

The airport is small and close, which makes the transfer short and unusually cheap.

The arrivals pitch is the one thing to watch Anyone approaching you inside the terminal with a fixed-price offer is not the metered taxi rank. Walk outside to the official queue or order through the app, and if a driver quotes well above the figures above, take the next car.

From Zhangjiajie West to the city and the park

The coach stop is at the front of the station, not across the road. Buy train tickets on 12306 with your passport or through a third-party platform.

From the downtown station

Zhangjiajie station serves slow trains only and sits in the middle of the city, which makes it the convenient arrival for Tianmen Mountain — the cableway base station is downtown and walkable. Coaches to Wulingyuan leave from the bus station next door, about every 20–30 minutes. Coming from Changsha in a hurry, this is the wrong station.

The last-leg trap

Almost every bad first day here comes from one assumption: that the park is a short ride from wherever you land. It is not. Wulingyuan is 25–30 km out, the coaches stop in the late afternoon, and park entry is a timed slot that will not wait.

Two ways around it: arrive before mid-afternoon and go straight to Wulingyuan, or spend the first night in the city and travel out in the morning. The second puts you next to the Tianmen cableway.

Give arrival day to the city, not the park A late train or delayed flight plus a 40-minute coach ride is a normal outcome. Book the park for a full morning instead.

Where to sleep, and why it matters here

Wulingyuan for park days: beside the East Gate, so the gate is minutes away rather than 40, and it is where the coach from Zhangjiajie West drops you. Zhangjiajie city for arrival and departure nights and for Tianmen Mountain.

The full travel sequence — trains from Changsha and Guangzhou, flight routing and the park's gates — is in the Zhangjiajie transport guide. Once there, the national park guide covers slots and routes, and the glass bridge and Tianmen Mountain page separates the two attractions people confuse.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an airport express train or metro from Zhangjiajie Hehua airport?

No. Zhangjiajie has no metro or urban rail, and the airport has no rail link. Arrivals leave by city bus No. 4 for ¥2, by metered taxi for roughly ¥20–30 by day, or by ride-hailing.

Which railway station should I book to?

Zhangjiajie West for every high-speed train: it handles all G and D services and is the closest arrival point to the national park. The older downtown station serves slow trains and is the convenient one for Tianmen Mountain.

How do I get from Zhangjiajie West station to the national park?

A direct coach leaves from the bus station at the front square of the station for Wulingyuan, beside the park's East Gate: around ¥12–13, about 40 minutes, running roughly 08:30–17:00.

How much is a taxi from the airport to the city centre?

Roughly ¥20–30 in daytime for the 11–15 minute run, and more after dark. Insist on the meter, or book through a ride-hailing app so the price is fixed before you get in.

What time do the buses to Wulingyuan stop?

The direct coach services generally finish in the late afternoon, around 17:00, and the airport city bus stops in the evening. Anyone arriving after that should plan a taxi, a ride-hailing car, or a night in Zhangjiajie city.

Is Hehua airport a visa-free transit port?

Yes. Zhangjiajie Hehua airport is an approved port under China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy, and Hunan sits inside the permitted travel area, so eligible nationalities transiting to a third country can enter for up to ten days. Eligibility depends on nationality, the onward ticket and the port, so check the rules on the official channel.
