Short answer
Canton Tower sits on the south bank of the Pearl River, one metro stop from Zhujiang New Town. Tickets are sold by height, and the ticket name tells you the highest deck it reaches — 428 and 433 metres are the enclosed sightseeing halls, 450 metres is an open-air deck, 460 metres adds the bubble tram, and 488 metres is the top outdoor platform.
Go up about an hour before sunset. One ticket then covers three views: daylight over the river, the blue hour, and full night when the bridges and towers light up. A daylight-only visit is a much easier sell in the wet season, when the open decks lose their point.
Book a time slot in advance rather than at the counter, take your passport, and allow two hours on the ground including the security check, the lift ride and the walk back along the promenade.
What the decks actually are
The tower sells its floors by height, so two tickets can look similar and feel completely different. An enclosed hall has glass between you and the view; the open decks do not, which is why they are the ones people photograph.
| Level | What is there | Inside or outside |
|---|---|---|
| 428 m | Cloud Sightseeing Hall | Enclosed |
| 433 m | Starry Sky Sightseeing Hall | Enclosed |
| 450 m | Outdoor observation deck, plus the Sky Drop ride | Open air |
| 460 m | Bubble Tram — a horizontal wheel of pods circling the tower | Open air |
| 488 m | Highest outdoor platform | Open air |
The bubble tram is the odd one out in the best way: pods travel around the outside of the tower at 460 metres, slowly, with nothing in front of the glass. It is a sightseeing ride, not a roller coaster, and it is the single most requested add-on.
The Sky Drop is the opposite mood — a controlled fall from the 450-metre deck. Both are sold separately as well as inside the higher packages, and both have their own hours that differ slightly from general tower access.
Tickets and what they cost
Packages are banded by the highest level included. A commonly published structure looks like this, with per-item prices for the two rides. Treat the figures as indicative and check the official channel, because packages, discounts and inclusions change through the year.
| Ticket package | Includes | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Package 1 (up to 433 m) | Cloud Sightseeing Hall 428 m + Starry Sky Hall 433 m | Around ¥150 |
| Package 2 (up to 450 m) | Both halls, outdoor deck 450 m, Sky Drop | Around ¥228 |
| Package 3 (up to 460 m) | Both halls, outdoor deck 450 m, bubble tram 460 m | Around ¥298 |
| Package 4 (up to 488 m) | Every deck plus bubble tram and Sky Drop | Around ¥398 |
| Single ride | Bubble Tram alone / Sky Drop alone | Around ¥180 / ¥100 |
Buy the level you actually want rather than the top package by default. If the point of the visit is the tram, Package 3 is the one that matters. If you want the highest point in the city, that is Package 4 and the 488-metre platform.
Opening hours
Published schedules put general tower access at about 9:30 to 22:30, with ticket sales ending around 22:00. The bubble tram and the Sky Drop run on their own clock, roughly 10:00 to 22:30, opening later on Mondays.
Maintenance days and public holiday schedules differ from the standard pattern — the tower also runs reduced evening-only windows on some dates. Check the official channel for the hours that apply on your day, ideally the same week.
Getting there
Canton Tower station, on Line 3, is a few minutes walk from the base, and the APM line links the tower directly with Huachengdadao in Zhujiang New Town. Crossing the river by taxi at rush hour is slower than the metro for the same trip.
| From | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Zhujiang New Town (opera house, museum, malls) | APM line to Canton Tower, or a riverside walk | Under 15 min by metro; about 40 min on foot |
| Guangzhou South or Guangzhou East rail hub | Metro to Canton Tower station, changing onto Line 3 | Roughly 40–60 min |
| Pearl River cruise piers | Riverside walk from the tower | 10–20 min on foot |
Most visitors pair the tower with the rest of Guangzhou on the same afternoon: the opera house, the Guangdong Museum and the malls of Zhujiang New Town are all on the far bank and easy to reach afterwards. Shenzhen and Hong Kong are both high-speed rail day trips from Guangzhou if you are building a longer route.
Best time to go up
- Sunset slot, roughly an hour before dusk: the best value ticket of the day. Daylight, blue hour and the lit skyline in one visit.
- Late morning on a weekday: the quietest decks and the shortest lift queues. Less atmosphere, far more space.
- Weekend evenings and public holidays: the sunset slots sell out and the lift lobby backs up. Book ahead or shift to a weekday.
- Wet season: May to September brings heavy afternoon showers and the occasional typhoon. The open decks and the bubble tram can be suspended in high wind, so check the weather the same day.
Practical rules visitors get caught out by
- Bring the passport you booked with. Chinese ticketing is real-name; the document checked at the entrance has to match the booking.
- Time slots matter. A booked slot gets you through the entrance ahead of the walk-up queue, but arriving late can mean waiting for the next available window.
- There is a security screen. Bags go through a scanner before the lifts, and large luggage is not practical to bring up.
- Lifts are the bottleneck. The ride to the top decks is short but the queue for it is not on a busy evening — factor in 20 to 40 minutes at peak.
- Food inside is limited and priced for the view. The towers and malls of Zhujiang New Town across the river are where most visitors eat before or after.
- Outdoor decks close first in bad weather and refunds are not automatic when only part of the package becomes unavailable. Check the official channel for the current policy.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a ticket for Canton Tower?
Yes, unless you are only visiting the retail and dining floors at the base. The observation decks, the bubble tram, the Sky Drop and the 488-metre outdoor platform are all ticketed, and the ticket name tells you the highest deck it reaches.
What is the difference between the Canton Tower observation decks?
They are named by height. The 428-metre hall and the 433-metre hall are enclosed sightseeing floors, the 450-metre level is an open-air deck, the 460-metre level is the bubble tram, and 488 metres is the highest outdoor platform. An enclosed ticket is enough on a wet or windy day; the open decks are where the photographs come from.
Is the Canton Tower bubble tram worth it?
It is the reason many visitors pick the 460-metre ticket. The tram is a horizontal wheel of pods that runs around the outside of the tower at 460 metres, so the view is unobstructed and the ride is short rather than thrilling. It is sold on its own and inside the higher ticket packages; check the official channel for the current inclusions.
What are Canton Tower opening hours?
Published schedules put general tower access at about 9:30 to 22:30 with ticket sales stopping around 22:00, and the bubble tram and Sky Drop running about 10:00 to 22:30, starting later on Mondays. Holiday and maintenance days differ, so check the official channel for your date.
How do I get to Canton Tower by metro?
Canton Tower station is on Line 3, and the APM line connects it directly with Huachengdadao in Zhujiang New Town. Both drop you within a few minutes walk of the entrance, which is faster than a taxi across the river at peak hours.
What is the best time of day to go up Canton Tower?
Arrive about an hour before sunset. One ticket then covers the daylight view, the blue hour when the river turns reflective, and full night when the bridges and the Guangzhou skyline light up. Late morning is the quietest stretch if you want the decks to yourself.
Can I book Canton Tower tickets on the day?
Often yes, but the sunset slots are the first to go on weekends and holidays and the higher packages sell out. Booking ahead fixes a time slot and saves the queue at the ticket counter, which can be long on a clear evening.
What ID do foreign visitors need at Canton Tower?
Take your passport. Ticketing in China is real-name, so the document used to book is the document checked at the entrance, and there is a security screen with the usual bag check before the lifts.
What is there to do near Canton Tower?
The riverside promenade, Haixinsha and the Zhujiang New Town cluster with the opera house and the Guangdong Museum are all within walking distance or one metro stop. Pearl River night cruises leave from nearby piers and are a separate paid ticket.
