Why Shenzhen, and who should skip it
Shenzhen is 45 years old — a fishing town until it became China's first Special Economic Zone in 1980. There is no Forbidden City here, no old town. What it has instead: a mountain in the middle of the CBD, the world's largest electronics market, and coastline. It is also the easiest mainland city to reach from Hong Kong, 14 minutes by high-speed rail.
If this is your first trip to China and you have a week, spend it in Beijing, Xi'an or Chengdu instead. Come here if you are already in Hong Kong, on business, or curious about the modern economy.

What to see
The city runs east to west along the coast, so a metro map beats a walking route.
| Sight | Cost | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| Lianhuashan Park | Free | Metro Line 2, Lianhua West |
| Shenzhen Museum, Jintian Road | Free | Lines 2 and 4, Civic Center |
| Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning | Free | Lines 3 and 4, Children's Palace |
| Shenzhen Bay Park | Free | Metro Line 9, waterfront |
| Huaqiangbei electronics markets | Free | Lines 2 or 7 to Huaqiangbei |
Lianhuashan Park is a twenty-minute paved climb with the civic district below you. Both museums run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays, with a designated channel for foreign passports. Huaqiangbei, the world's largest electronics district, opens late morning and closes around 7 p.m.
Window of the World and Splendid China Folk Village cost about ¥220 each and are scale models rather than rides — skip them. Shenzhen Bay Park gives you 13 km of free waterfront promenade, and the coast from Dameisha to the Dapeng Peninsula is the real stretch of hills and beaches.
Best time to go
Mid-October through November, and mid-March to mid-April. November is the best month: 24°C days, 30 mm of rain over four wet days, lowest humidity of the year. December to February is mild and dry at 19–20°C, though hotel rooms feel chilly in a cold snap.
Avoid June to September: June is the wettest month at roughly 320 mm over 21 rain days, July and August hold 33°C highs, and three to four typhoons a year pass the city from July to September.
Getting there
From Hong Kong by MTR: the East Rail Line ends at Lo Wu (6:30 a.m.–midnight, into Luohu and Line 1) and Lok Ma Chau (closes 10:30 p.m., into Futian Port). By high-speed rail from West Kowloon, both sides' immigration is handled inside the station — Futian about 14 minutes, Shenzhen North 19.
By air, Bao'an International (SZX): metro Line 11 reaches Futian CBD in 30–45 minutes for a few yuan, and a taxi or DiDi is roughly ¥100–150. Use Airport station on Line 11, not Airport East on Line 1.
Hong Kong and the mainland run separate immigration systems. Huanggang is the only 24-hour crossing.
How many days do you need?
Two or three days covers it. One day: Lianhuashan, the Shenzhen Museum, Huaqiangbei and Shenzhen Bay Park at sunset — all free. Two adds Nantou Ancient Town or OCT-LOFT; three adds the eastern coast. Hotels must register foreign guests within 24 hours of check-in, so confirm it takes foreign passports before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shenzhen worth visiting on a first trip to China?
Usually not. With one week and no previous China trip, Beijing, Xi'an or Chengdu give you more.
How do I get from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?
MTR East Rail to Lo Wu (6:30 a.m.–midnight) or Lok Ma Chau (closes 10:30 p.m.), then walk through immigration; or the high-speed train from West Kowloon, 14 minutes to Futian.
Do I need a separate visa if I entered Hong Kong visa-free?
Possibly. Hong Kong and mainland China run separate immigration systems, so a visa-free Hong Kong entry says nothing about entering Shenzhen.
Are Window of the World and Splendid China worth the ticket?
Both cost around ¥220 and are scale models rather than rides. Skip them and spend the day on the coast, which is free.
Where is the electronics market?
Huaqiangbei, in Futian — the world's largest electronics district. Metro Lines 2 or 7 to Huaqiangbei, or Line 1 to Huaqiang Road. Stalls open late morning, close around 7 p.m.
When is the best time to visit Shenzhen?
Mid-October to November, then mid-March to mid-April. Avoid June to September, when rain, heat and typhoon season overlap.
Before you go
Most of Shenzhen is free, so budget for the border hop and the metro — the China trip cost breakdown shows what a day here runs. Bring layers for a damp southern winter with the China packing list, and sort out data before you land: the metro, DiDi and Alipay all run on QR codes (see the China eSIM guide).
