Crossing Between Hong Kong and Shenzhen: Border, Visa and Transport

Six land crossings, an MTR line and a 14-minute train. Which one to use, and when · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Hong Kong and Shenzhen share a land border with six passenger crossings in regular use. They are not interchangeable: each one connects to a different part of Hong Kong, a different part of Shenzhen, and they keep different hours. Picking the right crossing is most of the work.

The two rail crossings are the easiest. The MTR East Rail Line terminates at Lo Wu (into Luohu, Shenzhen's older district) and at Lok Ma Chau (into Futian Port). Lo Wu runs 6:30 a.m. to midnight; Lok Ma Chau closes at 10:30 p.m. Alternatively, the high-speed rail from West Kowloon reaches Futian in about 14 minutes with immigration handled inside the station.

The visa question is the one people get wrong. Hong Kong and mainland China run separate immigration systems, so a visa-free entry into Hong Kong says nothing about your right to enter Shenzhen. Check your own nationality against the current mainland rules before you plan the day trip.

The six crossings at a glance

Hours below are the published operating hours for passenger clearance. They change around major holidays and are sometimes extended, so check the day you travel.

Huanggang is the only all-night passenger crossing If you are landing in Hong Kong late or leaving Shenzhen after midnight, this is your route. It is a road crossing, so you need a shuttle or coach on the Hong Kong side rather than a train.

Which crossing to use

Match the crossing to the trip you are actually taking, not to a general ranking.

If you want to…UseWhy
Reach downtown Shenzhen fast from Hong Kong Island or KowloonLo WuDirect MTR to the border, then Metro Line 1 straight into the city.
Arrive near Futian's business district and museumsLok Ma Chau, or the HSRFutian Port and Futian HSR station both land in the same district.
Cross late at nightHuanggangThe only crossing open around the clock.
Get to or from Hong Kong International AirportShenzhen Bay, or the Shekou ferryDirect coaches run between Shenzhen Bay and the airport; the ferry is the smoother option with luggage.
Avoid queues on a holiday weekendLiantang or WenjinduBoth are quieter than Luohu, at the cost of a bus leg.

Luohu carries the heaviest passenger volume of any of them, which is exactly why it is also the slowest at peak times. The peak runs roughly 9 a.m. to noon outbound and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. coming back, with Sunday evenings the worst of the week.

The MTR route, step by step

This is the route most visitors take and it is genuinely simple. The East Rail Line starts at Admiralty on Hong Kong Island and runs north through Kowloon to the border.

  1. Ride the East Rail Line to Lo Wu or Lok Ma ChauBoth are terminus stations and both are inside the restricted area, so you need a valid travel document to exit the train.
  2. Clear Hong Kong immigrationYou exit Hong Kong first. Have your passport or travel document ready, and your onward plans if asked.
  3. Walk across to mainland immigrationAt Lo Wu the two buildings are connected by a covered footbridge. At Lok Ma Chau it is a short walk into Futian Port.
  4. Clear mainland immigration and customsThis is where your mainland visa or visa-free status is checked. Queues here are the variable part.
  5. Join the Shenzhen metroLuohu connects to Metro Line 1; Futian Port connects to Lines 4 and 10. Buy a token, use a QR code, or pick up a day pass.
Cross-boundary fares cost more MTR journeys to Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau carry a premium over ordinary Hong Kong fares, and the two stations are excluded from some tourist passes. Check the current fare chart rather than assuming a normal metro fare.

The high-speed rail alternative

West Kowloon station runs trains to Futian and Shenzhen North, and it is a different experience from the MTR crossing. Immigration for both sides is handled inside West Kowloon before you board, so you arrive in Shenzhen already cleared.

Fares are set in renminbi with the Hong Kong dollar price adjusted periodically, so the number you see in Hong Kong dollars moves. Check the fare on the day.

Visa and entry rules

Hong Kong has its own immigration system. Mainland China has another. Crossing between them is an international border crossing in everything but name, and it counts as a separate entry into China.

Your situationWhat usually applies
Nationality covered by China's unilateral visa-free schemeUp to 30 days in the mainland, no onward ticket condition.
Transiting to a third country, with a confirmed onward ticket240-hour transit visa-free may apply, up to 10 days, with region restrictions.
Everyone elseA mainland visa is needed. Apply before you travel.
Short-notice trips from Hong KongA Shenzhen-only short-stay visa has historically been available on arrival at some crossings. Availability and eligibility vary, so confirm at the crossing or with the immigration authority before relying on it.
The transit route has a specific catch For 240-hour visa-free transit, the entry and exit ports matter. Reported guidance for Shenzhen is that the designated entry points are Bao'an airport, Shekou ferry port and West Kowloon high-speed rail station, while the ordinary land crossings at Luohu, Futian and Shenzhen Bay are used for departure rather than entry. Treat this as the starting point and verify against the National Immigration Administration before you book, because the port list has changed more than once.

Hong Kong residents travel on a different document entirely, crossing on a Home Return Permit or a similar travel permit rather than a passport. If you hold one of those, the visa discussion above does not apply to you.

Practical border notes

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Shenzhen without a visa if I am already in Hong Kong?

Only if your nationality qualifies for one of China's visa-free routes. Being in Hong Kong visa-free does not give you any right to enter the mainland. Check the unilateral visa-free list and the 240-hour transit rules against your own passport before planning the trip.

Which crossing is fastest?

Luohu is the fastest to reach by MTR but often the slowest to clear. Shenzhen Bay and Liantang usually clear quicker because they handle less foot traffic. The high-speed rail avoids the border queue entirely because immigration happens before boarding.

Is there a 24-hour crossing?

Huanggang is the only passenger crossing open around the clock. Lo Wu runs to midnight and Lok Ma Chau closes at 10:30 p.m. Shenzhen Bay's passenger clearance normally ends at midnight, though it has been extended overnight for major events.

Do I clear immigration twice?

Yes. You exit Hong Kong, then enter mainland China. Two separate inspections, two sets of officers. On the high-speed rail from West Kowloon both are done at the station before departure, which is why the check-in cut-off is earlier than a domestic train.

Can I take the metro across the border?

Not on a single ticket. The MTR East Rail takes you to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau, where you walk through both immigration halls, and you then join the Shenzhen Metro as a separate system with its own fares. There is no through-ticketing across the boundary.

How much does the MTR to the border cost?

More than an ordinary Hong Kong metro ride. Journeys to Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau carry a cross-boundary premium and are excluded from some tourist passes. Check the current MTR fare chart for the exact figure rather than assuming a standard fare.

What about the ferry?

Shekou port in Shenzhen runs ferries to Hong Kong Airport's SkyPier and to Hong Kong Island. It is the best option if you are connecting to a flight, because the SkyPier service is designed for airside transfers. Book ahead, and note that sailing times are limited.

Do I need to register my accommodation in Shenzhen?

Hotels do it for you at check-in by scanning your passport. If you stay in a private apartment or with friends, you are responsible for registering with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. Take your passport and your host's address details.
