Short answer
Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) sits in Bao'an District on the western edge of the city. Metro Line 11 is the default way in: a few yuan, no traffic, straight to Futian station in the CBD in well under an hour. Trains run from about 06:00 to around midnight — check the official channel for your date.
Land after the metro stops and the choice narrows to a taxi or DiDi at roughly ¥100–150 to central districts, 40–60 minutes off-peak, or an airport express bus at ¥20–30 for 60–90 minutes.
Arriving by high-speed rail instead, the station on your ticket matters more than the fare. Futian is underground in the CBD, Shenzhen North is in Longhua, and Shenzhen station at Luohu sits on the Hong Kong border crossing.
The airport: one terminal, one useful metro station
Bao'an International Airport has one main passenger terminal for domestic and international flights. The Ground Transportation Centre underneath connects it to the metro, the buses and the taxi ranks without going outside.
The station you want is Airport (机场) on Line 11, the Airport Line, built for luggage and faster than the rest of the network. Line 11 also runs a few business-class carriages at a higher fare.
Airport East (机场东), a separate station with no terminal connection. Older guides still point there because it was the airport stop years ago.
Every way from SZX into the city
| Option | Where it gets you | Rough cost | Time | When it wins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 11 | Futian CBD, with interchanges to Nanshan, Qianhai and Shekou | Single-digit yuan, distance-based | About 30–45 minutes to Futian | Daytime arrival, light luggage |
| Airport express bus | Several districts; counters in the Ground Transportation Centre | ¥20–30 | 60–90 minutes | Your hotel sits on a bus route and you would rather not change trains with bags |
| Overnight bus | Limited routes, roughly midnight to 04:00 | Bus fare band | Longer than daytime | A 01:00 landing on one of the few routes served |
| Taxi | Anywhere, door to door | About ¥100–150 to central districts | 40–60 minutes off-peak | Late arrival, four people, three suitcases |
| DiDi / ride-hailing | Anywhere; you set the pickup point in the app | Close to taxi prices, surge at peak | 40–60 minutes off-peak | You want the destination pre-typed in Chinese |
Last trains leave a few minutes apart at each station, so the timetable posted on the platform beats anything written down months earlier. Taxi ranks at the terminal run all night.
Arriving by high-speed rail: pick the right Shenzhen
Shenzhen has four passenger stations and they are far apart. The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link ties the city into the national high-speed network.
| Station | Where it is | Metro lines | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Futian | Underground, under the Shennan Boulevard and Yitian Road junction in the CBD | Lines 2, 3 and 11 | CBD hotels, and direct trains to Hong Kong West Kowloon |
| Shenzhen North | Longhua District, north of the city centre | Lines 4, 5 and 6, below the rail hall | Long-distance trains to Guangzhou South and beyond |
| Shenzhen (Luohu) | Luohu District, at the low end of the city | Line 1 | Crossing to Hong Kong on foot at Luohu |
| Shenzhen East | Buji, Longgang District | Lines 3 and 5 nearby | Regional services east; rarely right on a first trip |
Futian is the easiest of the four for a visitor: you surface in the business district and Line 11 runs straight to the airport. Shenzhen North is the long-distance hub, roughly 30–45 minutes from central Futian by metro, and reaching it from the airport takes one change rather than a direct line. With luggage, a metered taxi is the sane choice.
Tickets and the passport rule
High-speed tickets are real-name: the passport you book with is the passport you scan at the gate.
- Arrive 40–60 minutes early at Shenzhen North. Security plus the walk to the platform eats more time than the station map suggests.
- Use the staffed counter with a foreign passport. Plenty of self-service machines read Chinese ID cards only — see the Shenzhen travel guide for the wider arrival setup.
Mistakes visitors make here
- Getting off at Airport East on Line 1. It is not the terminal stop any more.
- Booking to the wrong Shenzhen station. "Shenzhen" and "Shenzhen North" are different places, an hour apart on a bad day.
- Assuming the metro runs all night. It does not, and the airport is too far out to walk.
- Accepting a ride from someone who approaches you inside the terminal. The official rank and the app are the only channels worth using.
- Arriving with no small cash. Taxis take QR payments, but a foreign card does not tap.
- Booking a hotel in Dongguan or Huizhou and calling it Shenzhen. Neither is treated as close by the rail network.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Shenzhen Bao'an Airport to the city?
Expect roughly ¥100–150 to central districts and 40–60 minutes off-peak. The meter sets the price, not the driver. Use the official rank or order DiDi in the airport app, and ignore fixed-price offers in the arrivals hall.
Does the metro run all night from Shenzhen Airport?
No. Line 11 stops around midnight and restarts around 06:00, with different times at each station. Overnight bus lines cover part of the night on a sparse schedule, and taxis run 24 hours. Check the official channel for your date.
Which Shenzhen railway station is best for Hong Kong?
Luohu, for the walk-across crossing, since Shenzhen station sits beside it on Metro Line 1. Futian and Shenzhen North both run direct high-speed trains to Hong Kong West Kowloon, which skips the land-crossing queue.
Can I tap a foreign contactless card on Shenzhen Metro gates?
Treat it as unreliable. A single-journey ticket from a machine, paid in cash or by QR code, and the metro QR code inside Alipay or WeChat are the routes that work. Check the official channel first.
My flight lands at 2am. What still runs?
Taxis and ride-hailing, plus a handful of overnight bus routes on limited lines. The metro does not run. A hotel near the terminal for one night is often cheaper than a long taxi ride into the city.
Do I need to book high-speed rail tickets in advance?
Book ahead for Hong Kong and Guangzhou services and around public holidays, when seats go days in advance. Tickets are real-name, and the booking window opens a set number of days before departure — check the official channel.
Can I use a self-service ticket machine with a foreign passport?
Many machines read Chinese ID cards only. Plan on the staffed counter, keep your passport out, and allow extra time when a queue forms before departure.
Is it worth flying into Hong Kong and crossing to Shenzhen instead?
Sometimes. Hong Kong has more long-haul flights, but you clear its immigration and then cross a border or take the express rail link, adding a border process mid-journey. Direct flights into Shenzhen are simpler where they exist.
