Chongqing Travel Guide

Mountain city, hotpot and the Yangtze cruise departure point.

11guidesUpdatedSeptember 2026

Chongqing is the only major Chinese city where the terrain is the attraction. Built on steep hills where the Jialing meets the Yangtze, a building's ground floor and its eleventh floor can both be street level, and a monorail runs through the sixth to eighth floors of a nineteen-storey tower.

China's wartime capital, where Three Gorges cruises start, and almost every sight is free. Costs run a little below Chengdu, ninety minutes away by high-speed train.

What to see

The core sights sit on the Yuzhong peninsula and almost all are free.

Hongya Cave (Hongyadong)

Eleven storeys of stilt houses against the cliff above the Jialing River, lit gold after dark, free to enter. The point is the outside: the photograph is taken from the Qiansimen Bridge walkway or the far bank. Lights come on at dusk, roughly 18:00 in winter and 19:30 in summer. Entry runs on free timed slots via the official mini-program or Meituan.

Liziba: the monorail through the building

Line 2 runs through a nineteen-storey residential tower, station on the sixth to eighth floors. The viewing platform at exit 4 is outside the fare gates and free, and trains pass every four to seven minutes.

Jiefangbei, Ciqikou and the cableway

Jiefangbei is the peninsula's pedestrian heart, free and always open; Bayi Road nearby is the food street. Ciqikou is a Ming and Qing porcelain port 40 minutes out on Line 1 — the paid courtyard house shuts mid-afternoon, so arrive then. The Yangtze River Cableway crosses to Nan'an for roughly ¥20–30; the queue is the real cost.

What to eat

Hotpot here is a beef tallow broth cooked at the table, eaten with sesame oil and garlic rather than a dipping sauce. Ask for yuanyang guo (鸳鸯锅, the split pot with a mild half) or wei la (微辣). Locals eat xiaomian noodles for breakfast, ¥10–20; a hotpot dinner is ¥60–120 per person.

Best time to go

October is the best month: around 18 to 23°C, roughly 100 mm of rain, and the best light and air quality of the year. Late October, once National Day has passed, is the most comfortable week; the other window is mid-March to mid-May.

Summer is the reason people ask at all: July and August average around 29°C as a daily mean, heatwaves reach 38 to 40°C, and 43°C has been recorded — do outdoor sights before 10:00 and after 18:00. Winter is milder, around 8°C in January, but damp and unheated, and the fog can delay flights. Our China packing list covers both extremes.

Getting there

Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) is roughly 20 km north-east of the centre. Line 10 serves both terminals; change at Hongtudi for Line 6 towards Xiaoshizi, a short walk from Jiefangbei — about an hour door to door for under ¥10.

From Chengdu the high-speed train takes about 90 minutes, and Chongqing takes part in China's 240-hour visa-free transit scheme. Check which station your train uses: North, West and East serve different lines.

The metro gate does not read the normal Alipay or WeChat payment code — activate the Chongqing ride code inside Alipay or WeChat Transport first. That needs working data, so an eSIM for China activated before you land saves you doing it at a turnstile.

How many days

TimeWhat you get
1 dayJiefangbei, the Liziba monorail and Hongya Cave after dark
2 daysAdds Ciqikou, the Three Gorges Museum and the riverfront. The practical minimum
3 daysAdds Wulong karst or the Dazu rock carvings as a full day

The peninsula holds Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, Liziba and the cableway within a few metro stops, and Ciqikou is one line out, so two full days is enough; a third adds Dazu or Wulong. Your map is flat and the ground is not — a 15-minute walk routinely takes 25. For the wider budget, see our China trip cost breakdown.
