Short answer
Three trips justify the early alarm: Wulong Karst (Three Natural Bridges, a UNESCO site, two to three hours each way), Dazu Rock Carvings (high-speed train to Dazu South in under an hour, then a long transfer), and the 816 Underground Nuclear Project in Fuling, which is the shortest of the three by rail and the one most visitors have never heard of.
Wulong is the headline trip and the one people get wrong. The train is fast, but the station sits about 20 km from the park and the last leg is a winding 40-minute minibus ride, so city gate to park gate runs three to five hours. Book the return train before you leave; evening services fill on weekends.
No permit is needed for any of these. Wulong and Dazu tickets are normally available on arrival at the same price as online; the train seats are what to reserve. With a single day in the city, skip all three and use the metro: Ciqikou, Liziba, Hongya Cave and the riverfront.
The options at a glance
| Destination | Travel each way | Ticket | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wulong — Three Natural Bridges | 3–5 hrs door to gate | Roughly ¥125–155 peak, less in winter, shuttle and lift included | Karst scenery, the one unmissable trip |
| Dazu Rock Carvings — Baoding Shan | 2–3 hrs | Around ¥115 peak for Baoding Shan; Beishan around ¥50–70 | Rock-cut Buddhist sculpture, UNESCO listed |
| 816 Nuclear Project, Fuling | 2–2.5 hrs | Modest; international resale platforms list adult tickets under US$10 | Cold War engineering, short visits, big impact |
| Ciqikou, Liziba, Hongya Cave | 20–40 min on the metro | Free | Days you do not want a train at 07:00 |
Wulong: the big one, planned honestly
Wulong is the reason to leave Chongqing. The Three Natural Bridges are three limestone arches over a gorge with a path running underneath, part of the South China Karst UNESCO listing. The loop, including the Longshuixia gorge extension, takes three to four hours.
The route: high-speed train from Chongqing North to Wulong, with the fastest services covering the run in well under an hour, then a minibus or taxi from the station up to the Xiannüshan town visitor centre, roughly 20 km and 40 minutes on a mountain road. The minibus costs a few yuan; a taxi is faster and dearer. The shuttle from the visitor centre to the park gate is part of the ticket.
| Time | Leg | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 06:30 | Leave the hotel for Chongqing North | Metro, not taxi; morning traffic on the bridges is brutal |
| 07:30–08:30 | Train to Wulong | Fastest services are under an hour; slower trains take about two |
| 09:15 | Minibus or taxi to the visitor centre | Roughly 40 minutes up the mountain road |
| 10:00–13:30 | Three Natural Bridges and the gorge | Grippy shoes; steps are wet and polished |
| 14:00 | Lunch in Xiannüshan town | Simple noodle and hotpot places; no need to book |
| 15:30 | Back down to Wulong station | Leave margin; the descent is slower than the climb |
| 17:00–18:30 | Return train to Chongqing | Booked in advance; evening services are the ones that sell out |
Furong Cave and Fairy Mountain are separate tickets. Adding either to a single day is where itineraries break.
Dazu Rock Carvings: the culture day
Dazu is a cluster of carved Buddhist grottoes from the Tang and Song dynasties, protected as a UNESCO site. Baoding Shan, the main group, is a horseshoe-shaped gully of figures carved into the rock face; the reclining Buddha and the Wheel of Life panels are the images people come for. Give it three hours; hours run roughly 08:30 to 18:00.
High-speed trains reach Dazu South from Chongqing West, Chongqing North and Shapingba in roughly 25 to 45 minutes. From there it is a taxi of about an hour, or local buses that take far longer; coaches from downtown stations take 1.5 to 2 hours. A small round-trip shuttle links the museum and Baoding Shan.
Baoding Shan and Beishan are ticketed separately; the combined ticket is the sensible buy. Beishan sits close to Dazu town, so it fits on the way back.
816: the day trip nobody mentions
The 816 project is a decommissioned underground nuclear plant carved out of a mountain near Fuling: a reactor hall the height of a cathedral, tunnels wide enough for trucks, all built in secret and never switched on. It is the most unusual half day within reach of Chongqing, and the crowd is mostly domestic.
Trains run to Fuling from Chongqing North; the site is around half an hour by taxi from Fuling town. Opening hours are short — the site closes mid-afternoon and last entry is earlier — so confirm the day's hours on the official channel. Tickets are sold on arrival.

In-city days that feel like day trips
Chongqing is a mountain city with a river through it, and the metro does most of the work. Ciqikou old town on Line 1 is a hillside of teahouses and snack stalls; the monorail through an apartment block at Liziba station on Line 2 is the photo everyone takes; Hongya Cave's stacked stilt-house facade lights up after dark near Xiaoshizi. It costs nothing but metro fares and fills an afternoon, which beats a six-hour round trip on a first or last day. Our Chongqing metro guide covers fares, lines and exits, and the attractions guide ranks the in-city stops.
Common mistakes
- Treating Wulong as a half day. It is a twelve-hour round trip with transfers, and the last leg is a mountain road.
- Leaving the passport at the hotel. Train tickets are tied to it and it is checked at the gate.
- Assuming Wulong station is at the park. It is in town, 20 km and 40 minutes away.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do Wulong as a day trip from Chongqing?
Yes, but it is a long day: roughly three hours each way once the transfer and the mountain road are counted, with a 06:30 start and a 19:00 return. An overnight in Xiannüshan town is easier and beats the coaches in.
Do any of these trips need a permit or advance booking?
No permit for Wulong, Dazu or Fuling. Wulong and Dazu tickets are normally available on arrival at the same price as online. The train seats are what to book ahead, particularly the return leg.
How much is the Three Natural Bridges ticket?
Roughly ¥125–155 in the March to October season and less in winter, including the shuttle and the cliff lift. Sources quote different figures, so check the official channel.
Which station do these trips leave from?
Chongqing North is the hub for Wulong and Fuling. High-speed trains to Dazu also run from Chongqing West and Shapingba. All three are on the metro, which is faster than a taxi at rush hour.
Is 816 in Fuling worth the trip?
If underground engineering interests you, yes — it is unlike anything else in China and rarely crowded. Hours are short and the site closes in the mid-afternoon, so it is a half day rather than a full one.
Should I book a tour or go independently?
Independently for Dazu and Fuling, where the route is simple and the saving is real. For Wulong, a small-group tour removes two transfers on a tight schedule. Screen out coach tours with shopping stops.
