Short answer
Daocheng Yading is a high-altitude nature reserve in western Sichuan, at the far end of a long road from Chengdu. Entry costs CNY 146 per person for the reserve plus CNY 120 for the sightseeing bus, which everyone rides because private cars stop at the gate. The entrance ticket is usually valid for more than one day; the bus ticket covers one day, with a smaller charge for a second.
Altitude is the variable that shapes the whole trip. Shangri-La Town sits at about 2,900m, the trailheads start around 4,100m, and the highest lakes are near 4,600m. The airport is at 4,411m, which is exactly why a flight from Chengdu can put you straight into a headache and a long drive feels gentler.
Plan two full days inside the reserve and one buffer day for acclimatisation. Mid-September to late October is the season people come for. The gate opens around 07:00, the last entry is mid-afternoon, and the last bus down is the number to write on your hand.
What Daocheng Yading actually is
Three snow peaks, four valleys and a Tibetan village inside the boundary. The reserve protects the triangle of Xiannairi (6,032m), Yangmaiyong (5,958m) and Xianuoduoji (5,958m), and the walking happens on boardwalk and gravel below them.
Geography matters here more than it does on most attraction pages, because the site covers roughly three levels and each one costs you a bus ride or a night's sleep to reach:
- Daocheng town — the county seat, around 3,750m, where long-distance buses and flights arrive.
- Shangri-La Town (Riwa) — the gateway village at about 2,900m, 10–15 minutes by car from the ticket office. Sleeping here is the single best altitude decision on the trip.
- Yading village and the trailheads — inside the reserve, where the buses drop you and the walking starts.
Two routes matter on the ground. The short route runs along the valley floor to Zhaguanbeng meadow and the Chonggu Monastery, with the peaks directly overhead. The long route climbs to Milk Lake and Five Colour Lake, a climb of roughly 5km each way from around 4,100m to 4,600m that takes three to five hours for most visitors with normal stops.
Altitude: the real planning constraint
Oxygen at these elevations is roughly two-thirds of what you breathe at sea level, and the reserve has no clinic. That combination makes pacing a safety decision, not a comfort preference.
| Place | Approximate elevation | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Shangri-La Town (Riwa) | 2,900m | Hospital, most beds, the lowest night's sleep available |
| Daocheng town | 3,750m | Where most flights and coaches land you |
| Yading village, inside the gate | 3,900–4,000m | Convenient for sunrise, harder first night |
| Chonggu Monastery meadow | 4,100m | End of the easy valley-floor walk |
| Milk Lake and Five Colour Lake | 4,500–4,600m | The climb most people underestimate |
| Daocheng Yading Airport | 4,411m | You arrive already high, with no gradual gain |
Practical habits that work: sleep the first night in Shangri-La Town rather than inside the park, walk at conversation pace rather than hiking pace, keep drinking water, skip alcohol entirely for the first 48 hours, and keep a warm layer on even when the sun is out. Cold makes altitude symptoms worse.
Tickets: what you pay and what it covers
Two separate charges, bought together at the ticket office and both real-name.
| Item | Recent published price | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Reserve entrance ticket | CNY 146 per adult | Multi-day entry, commonly two days, in recent seasons |
| Sightseeing bus, round trip | CNY 120 per person | One day, unlimited rides on the internal routes |
| Bus, second day | CNY 60 per person | Added at the gate on the day you return |
| Discounted entrance | Roughly half price | Children, students and seniors with valid ID |
| Car-pool taxi, town to gate | About CNY 10 per person | Shared, 10–15 minutes |
Winter pricing and multi-day validity change between seasons, so treat the table as the shape of the cost rather than a quote. The official scenic-area channel is authoritative for your date.
Opening hours and how a day runs
Gates open early — around 07:00 — and the last entry is mid-afternoon, moving earlier outside the main season. The number that catches visitors out is not the opening time but the last bus down, which runs mid-evening in high season and earlier in winter.
- 07:00–08:00, gateArrive early. The first buses carry the longest day. Buy the bus ticket when you buy entry; there is no separate window inside.
- The bus up to the trailheadsYou ride, then walk. The internal shuttle takes about 30–40 minutes from the gate to the top stop, depending on which valley you are heading into.
- Late morning, the easy valleyBoardwalk out to Chonggu Monastery and the meadow, with the three peaks in front of you. Flat, scenic, and the right first stop on day one at altitude.
- Midday, the lakes climbFrom the electric-cart stop near Luorong pasture the trail climbs to Milk Lake and Five Colour Lake. Start before noon. Budget four to five hours on the mountain.
- By mid-afternoon, turn aroundThe light goes early in the valleys and the mountains between you and the bus stop are not somewhere to be after dark.
- Last busConfirm the time at the gate on the morning you enter. Drivers stop running on schedule, not on your progress.
Getting there: fly or drive
Two routes, and the trade-off is time against altitude. Flying saves a day and delivers you at 4,411m. Driving takes a long day or two and gains height gradually.
| Route | Time | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Fly to Daocheng Yading Airport, then transfer | About 1 hour in the air from Chengdu, then a road transfer of two to three hours to Shangri-La Town; the airport is roughly 130km from the reserve | Fastest, but landing high without acclimatisation |
| Airport shuttle into Daocheng county | About 1 hour | Shuttles run to meet incoming flights |
| County to Shangri-La Town | About 2 hours by coach or shared car | Morning and early-afternoon departures |
| Long-distance coach from Chengdu | 12–14 hours | Cheap, slow, gradual altitude gain; seats sell out in autumn |
| Private car or organised overland route | Two days with a stop at intermediate altitude | The best acclimatisation, the highest cost |
Most visitors land in Chengdu and make the decision there. Chengdu sits near 500m, so it is a useful place to spend the first night either way. If you are building a longer western-Sichuan loop, the same flights and roads connect onward to Lijiang and the Yunnan side.
When to go
| Window | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-September to late October | Larch colour, clearest peaks, best oxygen of the trekking months | The season, and the busiest one |
| Late April to early June | Alpine flowers, fewer visitors, unstable weather | The quiet alternative |
| Mid-July to mid-August | Green meadows, afternoon rain, occasional road delays | Wet but workable |
| December to March | Cold, quiet, reduced lodging, some routes restricted by snow | Only for a winter-equipped visit |
Booking, passports and the rules people miss
Tickets are real-name, so bring the physical passport used to book. A photo of the data page is not accepted at the gate.
- Advance booking is not the default. The reserve does not normally operate a daily cap the way some Chinese parks do, and bookings at the gate are routine. In golden-week weeks and peak October, check the official channel before assuming you can simply turn up.
- Private vehicles stay outside. Self-driving gets you to the gate, not into the valleys.
- Cash still works at the gate and for the car-pool taxis. Mobile payment coverage is thinner up here than in Chengdu; a folded CNY 200 covers the day.
- Signal comes and goes. Download an offline map and keep the return-bus time written down.
- Weather moves fast. Sun, sleet and strong wind can all happen on the same walk. A shell and a warm mid-layer are the dress code, in every season.
What to carry into the reserve: water for four hours of walking, food — the food options inside are limited and pricey — sun protection, a hat, gloves in autumn, your own canned oxygen if you have used it before, and a charged power bank. Leave the heavy camera bag at the hotel for the lakes day; the climb is unkind to extra weight.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to visit Daocheng Yading?
There is no permit application for the reserve itself. Tickets are real-name, so the passport used for the booking is what gets you through the gate. If your wider route crosses other parts of Garze Prefecture, check the official channel before you go.
How high is Daocheng Yading and will I get altitude sickness?
The park sits between roughly 2,900m at Shangri-La Town and 4,600m at the highest boardwalks, with the airport at about 4,411m. Most visitors feel the altitude on the first day. Sleep the first night low, walk slowly, and treat a bad headache with vomiting as a signal to descend rather than push on.
How long do I need for Daocheng Yading?
Two full days inside the reserve is the working minimum, and three is comfortable if you want both the short and the long valleys without rushing. Add one acclimatisation night below 3,000m if you can.
Is the sightseeing bus mandatory?
Yes. Private vehicles stay outside. You buy a bus ticket with the entrance ticket, it covers the run from the gate up to the trailheads, and it is valid for the day. A second day on the bus is charged separately.
Can I fly into Daocheng Yading Airport?
Yes, and it is the fastest route, roughly an hour in the air from Chengdu. The airport is at about 4,411m, so some visitors land straight into a headache. It is also about 130km from the reserve, so the transfer takes the rest of the day.
When is the best time to visit Daocheng Yading?
Mid-September to late October for the larch colour and the clearest snow-peak views. Late April to early June is the second window, with fewer visitors and less predictable weather. Mid-July to mid-August is wet, and December to March is a cold, quiet winter with reduced lodging.
What time do the gates open?
The gate typically opens around 07:00 and the last entry is mid-afternoon, with the closing time moving earlier outside the main season. The last bus down is the number that matters most, and it runs mid-evening in high season. Confirm both for your date on the official channel.
Is there oxygen or a clinic inside the park?
Canned oxygen is sold near the gate and in the villages, and no clinic operates inside the park. The nearest hospital is in Shangri-La Town at about 2,900m, which is also the fastest way to feel better. Carry your own canister if you have used one before.
