Lijiang Travel Guide

Naxi old town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Tiger Leaping Gorge.

10guidesUpdatedSeptember 2026

Lijiang is a Naxi town on the Yunnan plateau at about 2,400 m. Its old town, Dayan (大研), joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997 together with the villages of Shuhe and Baisha a few kilometres away. There is no ticket gate on the lanes, but a ¥50 Old Town Maintenance Fee has applied since 1 August 2025, valid 365 days, and it is checked at Black Dragon Pool and the snow mountain ticket counter.

Lijiang suits travellers who want a walkable historic town and a mountain day from one base. It does not suit anyone expecting a quiet village: the main lanes are guesthouses, bars and gift shops, packed from about 11:00 to 15:00 in peak season. The hours that pay for the trip are before 09:00 and after 21:00.

The mountain is the one booking to plan: cable car tickets are sold by real name on the Lijiang Tourism Group mini-program, released seven days ahead at 20:00, and cancellations are re-released around 16:00. Bring the passport you booked with, and buy oxygen in town at ¥10-25 rather than ¥39 at the base.

Best time to go

April to May and mid-October to November hold up. April is the best single month: dry, clear, and clear of the 1-5 May holiday. Mid-October has the best light, but arrive after 7 October to miss National Day week.

Avoid August, when it rains on about 28 days and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is clear on fewer than one morning in five, against around 80% of mornings from November to February. Winter is dry and sunny with freezing nights, and courtyard guesthouses often lack heating, so confirm a heater before booking. Keep a spare day to move the mountain to a clear morning.

The airport coach stops short of the old town It ends at the Lantian (Blue Sky) Hotel in the new town, 1 to 2 km from the waterwheel, which is a further ¥7-10 taxi. No vehicle reaches the guesthouses, so name a gate rather than "the old town": North Gate (丽江古城北门) or Zhongyi Market (忠义市场).

How many days

Two: Dayan, the Mu Mansion and the viewpoints, then Black Dragon Pool at dawn and Shuhe in the afternoon. Three: adds the snow mountain or the gorge, with a spare morning. Lugu Lake is 200 km away and is not a day trip.

Before you book

Three pages cover the rest: what a China trip actually costs, the China packing list, because 2,400 m needs layers and 4,500 m needs a down jacket, and the China eSIM guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lijiang Old Town free to enter?

You can walk the lanes without a gate ticket. The ¥50 maintenance fee, in force since 1 August 2025, is valid 365 days and covers Dayan, Black Dragon Pool, Shuhe and Baisha.

What is the best time of year to visit?

April to May and mid-October to November. Avoid August, when it rains on about 28 days, and the 1-7 October and 1-5 May holiday weeks.

Do I need to book Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in advance?

For the glacier cable car, yes: real-name tickets on the Lijiang Tourism Group mini-program, released seven days ahead at 20:00 and tied to your passport.

How do I get from the airport to the Old Town?

The coach is ¥20-25 over 40 to 50 minutes, but it ends at the Lantian Hotel, about 1 to 2 km short, which is a further ¥7-10 taxi. A taxi to a gate is ¥80-150; a DiDi is usually ¥70-90.

Is altitude a problem in Lijiang?

The town sits at about 2,400 m, usually felt as poor sleep or a headache on the first night. The cable car climbs to 4,506 m with no acclimatisation, so sleep at town altitude first.

Figures come from the Lijiang guides in this section, which show the spread of published prices rather than averaging them; confirm fares and release windows on the operator's own channel.
