Hongya Cave (2026): Tickets, Opening Hours and Practical Tips

Free entry, lighting times, the two photo spots that matter and how to dodge the evening crowd · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Hongya Cave is free to enter and open roughly 9:00 to 23:00. It is an 11-storey stilt-house complex built up a cliff on the Jialing River in Yuzhong District — not a cave, despite the name. The building is the attraction; there is no ticket window to queue at.

Come for the evening. The facade lights up around 18:30 to 19:00 and stays lit until closing, and the first ten minutes after the lamps come on, while the sky still holds colour, are the ones worth being there for. Two viewing positions do most of the work: the pedestrian deck of Qiansimen Bridge, 150 metres from the top floor of the complex, and the riverside park across the river near the Grand Theatre.

Reach it by metro — Line 1 or 6 to Xiaoshizi, then a 5 to 10 minute walk. Taxis gridlock around the complex during lighting hours, and on peak days the site caps the number of people inside and may ask for a free time slot booked through the official WeChat mini-program.

What Hongya Cave actually is

Hongya Cave, known locally as Hongyadong, is a hillside of stilt houses stacked 11 levels deep against the Jialing River. The building is on the same slope as the city around it, which is why the floor numbering confuses every first-time visitor: the 11th floor opens onto the street at Cangbai Road, while the 1st floor sits on the riverside road.

Inside, the levels have distinct characters rather than one uniform shopping arcade.

LevelsWhat is thereWhy you would go
1–4Riverside dining, hotpot, traditional restaurantsDinner with a river view before the lights come on
5–8Shops and a dense street-food arcade, including Chongqing noodlesCheap eating and gifts; this is the busiest stretch
9–11Rooftop bars and restaurants, Cangbai Road at street levelDrinks looking down the river; the walking route to Qiansimen Bridge

Everything is on a slope, and the lifts and escalators fill up when the lights go on. Walking the levels is the point, but it is genuinely vertical walking — leave the luggage at the hotel.

Tickets, reservations and what is actually paid

Admission is free and there is no ticket to buy. Three things nearby are paid and separate: river cruises that leave from the Chaotianmen area, some performances and shows inside the complex, and food and drink at every level.

Free entry does not mean unlimited capacity. On public holidays and during peak lighting hours the complex limits how many people are inside at once, and a free time slot booked through the official WeChat mini-program is the mechanism used to manage it. Rules on exact dates change, so check the official channel for the days you plan to visit.

There is no Hongya Cave admission ticket Anyone at the entrance selling a ticket to get in is selling something else — usually a cruise, a tour, or nothing at all. If a paid experience interests you, buy it through an official channel, not from a person on the pavement.
The best hours cost nothing Lighting times change through the year, but the pattern does not: lamps on in the early evening, off at closing. Arriving an hour early means you eat before the rush and still catch the switch-on from the bridge.

Opening hours and lighting times

The complex runs about 9:00 to 23:00, and the facade is lit from early evening until it closes. Sources differ by season on the exact switch-on — published times range from about 18:30 to 19:00, and the lighting sometimes comes on in stages rather than all at once.

Check the official channel for the current lighting times and any earlier closing, because holidays and events shift them.

How to get there

Chongqing's metro is the reliable option. The complex sits between two stations, and which one you use depends on whether you are going inside or heading for the riverbank.

StationLineWalk
XiaoshiziLine 1 or Line 6Exit 9, about 600 m, 5–10 min to the complex
LinjiangmenLine 2About 500 m from the Jiefangbei side
Grand TheatreLine 6Exit 1 or 2, a few minutes to the riverside park across the water

From the Jiefangbei pedestrian street it is a ten minute walk to the top level via Cangbai Road, which is the easiest approach with a phone map. Chongqing's metro and hillside geography take a day to get used to; the first ride is the one that surprises people.

Where to take the photographs

The classic shot is not taken at the building. It is taken from a bridge.

  1. Qiansimen Bridge, pedestrian deckFrom the top floor of the complex, walk about 150 metres onto the bridge. The middle of the span gives the full facade with the river and its reflections. Walking 100 metres further out clears most of the selfie sticks.
  2. Riverside park near the Chongqing Grand TheatreCross to the far bank, Line 6 to Grand Theatre station, and walk down to the waterfront. This frames the complex together with Qiansimen Bridge and the skyline behind it, with far fewer people than the bridge.
  3. Level 1, looking upThe riverside road at the base gives the upward view of the stacked floors. Quick, and worth doing on the way out.
  4. TimingBlue hour — the 15 minutes after the lamps come on — is the window. Later, the sky goes black and the facade loses its contrast against it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hongya Cave free to enter?

Yes. There is no entry ticket for the 11-storey complex itself, and it is open from about 9:00 to 23:00. Paid items nearby are separate businesses, such as river cruises and some performances, so anything sold at the entrance as a Hongya Cave ticket is something other than admission.

What time does Hongya Cave light up?

The facade is illuminated from roughly 18:30 to 19:00 depending on the season until 23:00, when the complex closes. The best light is in the first 10 to 15 minutes after the lamps come on, while the sky still holds some colour.

Do I need a reservation to visit Hongya Cave?

Free entry still means capacity control. At peak lighting hours and on public holidays the complex caps the number of people inside and may ask for a time slot booked through the official WeChat mini-program. Check the official channel for the days you plan to go.

Where is the best place to photograph Hongya Cave?

Two spots. The first is the pedestrian deck of Qiansimen Bridge, about 150 metres from the top floor of the complex, which gives the classic straight-on view. The second is the riverside park across the Jialing River near the Chongqing Grand Theatre, which frames the complex together with the bridge and fewer people.

How do I get to Hongya Cave by metro?

Xiaoshizi station on Line 1 or Line 6, another 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the complex. From the Jiefangbei side, Linjiangmen station on Line 2 is about 500 metres away, and Grand Theatre station on Line 6 puts you at the riverside park on the opposite bank.

What is the best time of day to visit Hongya Cave?

Arrive about an hour before the lights come on, so you can eat or walk through the levels while it is still quiet inside, then be on Qiansimen Bridge when they switch on. Metros and taxis fill up by 20:00, so the earlier half of the evening is easier in every way.

How long do I need at Hongya Cave?

Two to three hours covers the levels, the bridge and a meal inside. If you are also shooting from the riverside park across the water, allow four. The complex is compact, but moving between levels and fighting the evening crowd takes longer than the map suggests.

Is Hongya Cave worth it if I dislike crowds?

Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday outside public holidays, arrive before 18:30, and watch the lights from the riverside park rather than from the busiest stretch of the bridge. The building is a five-minute walk from Jiefangbei, so leaving early costs you nothing.

Are taxis a good way to reach Hongya Cave in the evening?

No. The streets around the complex gridlock during lighting hours and drivers will often drop you a block or two away. The metro is faster and predictable, and the walk from Xiaoshizi is flat and well signed.
