Chengdu Day Trips: Dujiangyan, Leshan, Siguniang and Huanglongxi

What fits in a day, what needs an overnight, and how long each trip really takes · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Two intercity rail lines run out of Chengdu, both built for commuters rather than tourists. Dujiangyan with Mount Qingcheng is the classic day out, the Leshan Giant Buddha is the second, and Huanglongxi, the old water town, is the easy third.

The trains decide the trip. Metro Line 2 ends at Xipu, where the intercity service to Dujiangyan, Lidui Park and Qingchengshan leaves from the same station. Xipu to Dujiangyan is roughly 25 to 40 minutes, second class around ¥10-27; Xipu to Qingchengshan adds ten to fifteen minutes. The southern line reaches Leshan from Chengdu East in 41 minutes to about an hour and a quarter and continues to Emeishan station.

Mount Siguniang is 205 km west with no railway and four to six hours of road each way, so it is not a day trip however it is sold. Xiling Snow Mountain is a long but workable winter day. Buy return tickets at the station, carry your passport, and check times and fares on 12306 before travelling.

What actually works as a day trip

Rail is the dividing line. Anything on the Chengdu-Mianyang-Leshan intercity railway or the Chengdu-Dujiangyan line can be done between breakfast and a late dinner. Anything off those lines means a car or a coach, and the round trip eats the day.

Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng in one day

The stations that matter

The intercity platform sits inside Xipu station, so the transfer from Metro Line 2 is a walk. Three stations serve the area and they are not interchangeable: Dujiangyan for the town, Lidui Park (1.8 km from the irrigation system entrance) and Qingchengshan for the mountain. Trains run in both directions until around 21:00, and return tickets sell out at weekends and on public holidays, so buy both legs together.

The irrigation system

Dujiangyan is a working water project from the third century BC, still splitting the Min river to irrigate the Chengdu plain. The walk covers the Fish Mouth levee, the Flying Sand Weir and the Anlan suspension bridge, and two to three hours covers it at an unhurried pace. After dark the river channel is lit, which locals call the blue tears.

Mount Qingcheng

Take the front mountain on a combined day: a stepped climb through Taoist temples with a cable car to cut the worst of it, two to three hours up and down. The back mountain is a longer, wilder four to five hours and deserves its own day. Wear grip, because the stone steps stay damp.

TimeWhat happens
07:00Metro Line 2 to Xipu, then the intercity train toward Qingchengshan
08:10Qingchengshan station; taxi to the front mountain gate, about 10 minutes
08:30-12:00Front mountain: Jianfu Palace, the cable car, Shangqing Palace at the top
12:00-13:30Taxi or the short intercity hop to Dujiangyan; lunch in the old town
13:30-16:30Dujiangyan irrigation system, including the Anlan bridge
16:30-18:30Old town, Nanqiao bridge, dinner before the journey back
19:00 onwardsTrain from Lidui Park back to Xipu, then Metro Line 2 into the city
Reverse the order at weekends Dujiangyan takes the heavier crowds of the two, and the mountain gate is quietest early. On a Saturday or public holiday, either start at Dujiangyan or accept that both sites will be busy and keep the schedule loose.

Leshan Giant Buddha, and why Emei does not fit alongside it

The Buddha is 71 metres of eighth-century carving cut into a cliff where two rivers meet. Two ways to see it: the boat, which passes the whole figure in about half an hour and gives the complete view, and the stairway down the cliff beside it, which is the classic route and involves a queue that can run to two hours in peak season. Entry is around ¥80. Leshan station is not next to the site; bus 3 or 13 covers the last stretch and a taxi takes 25 to 35 minutes. Arriving before 09:00 changes the queue materially.

Mount Emei is another 30 to 40 minutes down the same line, and this is where the arithmetic breaks. The summit is 3,099 m and reaching it means a mountain bus plus a cable car, six to nine hours in total. A day trip from Chengdu reaches the lower slopes and Baoguo temple. Treat Emei as one overnight at the base at minimum.

Mount Siguniang: a driving day, not a day trip

Siguniang is around 205 km west with no station and no airport, so the whole trip is road. A private car takes four to five hours each way in good conditions, a coach from Chadianzi bus station five to six. The passes are high, and the weather decides the timetable.

Tours sell a one-day version leaving Chengdu around 06:00 and returning between 19:30 and 20:00, which is eleven and a half to thirteen hours. Strip out the road and roughly three hours remain in Shuangqiao valley, the one valley a shuttle bus can cover. The town sits at about 3,200 m, so altitude is another reason not to rush it. Two days is the realistic minimum for Changping valley on foot; the classic trek to Bipeng wants three to five.

Huanglongxi Ancient Town

Forty kilometres south-east of the centre, Huanglongxi is a 1,700-year-old town of wooden houses, a stream through the middle and a handful of temples. It is free to walk, flat, and the food stalls are the point as much as the architecture. Coaches leave from Xinnanmen and Chadianzi and take an hour to ninety minutes. Weekends bring Chengdu families by the coachload, so a weekday morning is a different town. Two to three hours is enough.

Xiling Snow Mountain

Xiling sits in Dayi county, 95 to 117 km from the centre. The high-speed train reaches Dayi station in about half an hour from Chengdu South, then a connecting bus covers the last stretch in one and a half to two hours; by road the whole run is two to two and a half hours. The resort is mid-mountain, with a cable car up to the snow area and a second higher again, and queue length at the cable car decides whether a day trip works. In winter it is Chengdu's skiing answer, usually paired with the hot springs at Huashuiwan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng in one day?

Yes, with an early start. Take the intercity train from Xipu to Qingchengshan, walk the front mountain in the morning, transfer to Dujiangyan for the afternoon and return from Lidui Park. The back mountain of Qingcheng does not fit in the same day.

Is the Leshan Giant Buddha worth a day trip from Chengdu?

It is one of the easier ones. The intercity train from Chengdu East takes 41 minutes at best and around an hour and a quarter on slower services, then 25 to 35 minutes from Leshan station to the site.

Can I do Leshan and Mount Emei on the same day?

Not properly. They are 30 to 40 minutes apart by rail, but Emei's summit needs a mountain bus and cable car and six to nine hours on its own. One day covers the Buddha; Emei needs an overnight at the base.

Is Mount Siguniang a realistic day trip?

Only as a long tour-bus day of 11.5 to 13 hours, of which roughly eight hours is on the road and about three in Shuangqiao valley. There is no railway and no airport. Two days, with a night in Siguniangshan town, is the sensible version.

Do I need to book train tickets in advance?

Tickets go on sale a set number of days before departure and that window changes, so check 12306 for the current rule. Weekday tickets at Xipu or Chengdu East can usually be bought on the morning; weekends, holidays and evening returns need booking ahead.

How do I get to Huanglongxi Ancient Town?

Coaches leave from Xinnanmen and Chadianzi bus stations and take one to ninety minutes. Taxis take about the same time. Entry to the town is free; individual temples charge separately.

Should I book a tour or go independently?

For Dujiangyan, Qingcheng, Leshan and Huanglongxi, the train and bus network is straightforward and a tour adds little. For Siguniang and Xiling in winter, a car removes road and cable-car uncertainty, which is where the value sits.

What is the best single day trip from Chengdu?

Dujiangyan with Mount Qingcheng, because it combines a UNESCO-listed water engineering site with a Taoist mountain, on a train that leaves every twenty to thirty minutes. Leshan is the better answer if you want one big sight rather than two half-days.
