Short answer
Huangshan is walked on stone staircases, tens of thousands of them, and almost nobody climbs from the valley floor. The normal plan is Yungu cable car up on the back mountain, a full day of ridge walking, Yuping cable car down on the front. That covers roughly 12 km and 6 to 7 hours without the 3 to 4 hour stair climb at the start.
The two sides are genuinely different. The back (east) side from Yungu Temple is the gentler approach and puts you straight into the scenery at Shixin Peak and Beihai. The front (west) side from Ciguang Pavilion is steeper and more dramatic, and holds the Guest-Greeting Pine. Hiking up the front takes 5 to 6 hours of stairs; the back takes 3 to 4.
Sunrise needs an overnight on the summit. Bright Summit Peak, Refreshing Terrace and Lion Peak are the classic viewpoints; in summer you leave the hotel around 04:00 to 04:30, in winter 05:30 to 06:00. The West Sea Grand Canyon is the best single stretch of walking on the mountain, and it closes for winter maintenance from about December to late March.
Front mountain versus back mountain
Both sides start from the South Gate area near Tangkou but climb different valleys to different ends of the ridge. Neither is better; doing one up and the other down is the standard route.
| Back mountain (east) | Front mountain (west) | |
|---|---|---|
| Lower station | Yungu Temple | Ciguang Pavilion |
| Cable car | Yungu, ¥80 high season | Yuping, ¥90 high season |
| Upper station | Bai'e Ridge (White Goose Ridge) | Yupinglou, by the Guest-Greeting Pine |
| Hike up on foot | 3-4 hours, ~7.5 km | 5-6 hours, ~14-15 km |
| Character | Gentler gradient, scenery dense early | Steep, exposed, big drops |
| Highlights | Shixin Peak, Black Tiger Pine, Beihai, Monkey Watching the Sea | Guest-Greeting Pine, Hundred-Step Ladder, Lotus Peak, Tiandu Peak |
| Crowd pattern | Busier in the morning | Busier as people descend |
The back-up, front-down direction became standard for practical reasons. The back side is easier on cold legs, the scenery arrives within the first hour instead of after three, and the front side's steep steps are easier down than up.
Cable car or on foot?
Riding up is not a shortcut past the mountain. You still walk for hours on the ridge. The cable cars move you past the forest-and-stair section and save your legs for the granite and cloud.
| Line | Route | One way | Ride |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yungu | Yungu Temple to Bai'e Ridge | ¥80 peak / ¥65 winter | About 8 min |
| Yuping | Ciguang Pavilion to Yupinglou | ¥90 peak / ¥75 winter | About 8 min |
| Taiping | Songgu Nunnery to Pine Forest Peak (North Gate) | ¥80 peak / ¥65 winter | About 11-12 min |
| West Sea funicular | Canyon floor to Tianhai | ¥100 peak / ¥80 winter | About 3 min |
Peak season runs roughly March to November, winter December to late February. Cable cars typically run 07:00 to 17:10 on weekdays and 06:30 to 17:40 on weekends in peak season, and 08:00 to 16:40 in winter. Each line closes in turn for winter maintenance, so a line you planned around may be out. Taiping is the longest, spanning about 3.5 km with over 1,000 metres of height gain, and its queues are the shortest.
For a full climb, the Eastern Steps from Yungu Temple are the realistic option: 3 to 4 hours at a steady pace on a continuous staircase. Eastern Steps up, ridge circuit, Western Steps down is a 10-hour day for fit walkers, with no margin for weather.
The classic one-day circuit
The route most first-time visitors walk, assuming cable cars in both directions.
- Tangkou transfer centre, early. Shuttle bus to Yungu Temple,
¥19, 20 to 30 minutes. Take the first buses on holidays. - Yungu cable car up to Bai'e Ridge, on the ridge in about 8 minutes.
- Shixin Peak and Black Tiger Pine. A compact cluster of ancient pines, about an hour with photo stops.
- Beihai scenic area. Monkey Watching the Sea and the Dream Pen Blossoms, another hour, mostly gentle.
- Paiyun Pavilion and the West Sea Grand Canyon. The high point of the walk. Descending the two loops is about 2.5 km of downhill, 90 to 120 minutes.
- West Sea funicular up from the canyon floor to Tianhai,
¥100, saving about three hours of climbing out. - Bright Summit Peak. The second-highest point at around 1,860 metres, with a 360-degree platform and the best cloud sea odds.
- Flying-Over Rock, Aoyu Peak, the Hundred-Step Ladder, Guest-Greeting Pine, the front-side highlight reel, walking south.
- Yuping cable car down to Ciguang Pavilion, then the shuttle to Tangkou.
Total: about 12 km, 6 to 7 hours, and roughly ¥498 per person: ¥190 entry, ¥170 for two cable cars, ¥100 funicular, ¥38 for two shuttle rides.
The West Sea Grand Canyon
A deep cleft on the west side of the ridge, walked on cliffside paths and stairways cut into the rock. It has two descending loops and a sightseeing funicular at the bottom that lifts you to Tianhai. Entry is included in the mountain ticket; only the funicular costs extra.
It closes for winter maintenance from around 1 December to late March each year, funicular included, and reopened on 14 March in 2026. It can also shut temporarily for ice, snow or strong wind. If your route depends on the canyon, check the current notice first.
Going down the loops is the easy direction. Most walkers descend to the floor and take the funicular back up rather than reversing the descent.
Sunrise and sunset
Both require a summit hotel. There is no legal alternative: no camping, no tents, no sleeping in a stairwell.
| Viewpoint | Best for | Nearest hotels |
|---|---|---|
| Bright Summit Peak (Guangming Ding) | Sunrise and sunset, widest panorama | Guangmingding Shanzhuang, Baiyun |
| Refreshing Terrace (Qingliang Tai) | Sunrise, classic view | Beihai, Shilin |
| Lion Peak | Sunrise and sunset | Beihai, Shilin |
| Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion (Paiyun Ting) | Sunset over the canyon | Xihai, Paiyunlou |
| Danxia Peak | Sunrise and sunset | Xihai |
Departure times shift through the year. Summer (May, August) means leaving around 04:00 to 04:30; winter (November, February) 05:30 to 06:00; shoulder months March, April, September and October, 04:30 to 05:00. Check the forecast the night before: cloud cover above 80% with precipitation probability over 60% means summit visibility drops to tens of metres.
Sea of clouds needs the cloud top below the summit while the sky above stays clear, most often the morning after rain or during an inversion. Late spring and autumn give the best odds.
Timing, tickets and closures
- Trailhead ticket checks close around 15:00. Arriving later means no entry on foot, ticket or not.
- Scenic area hours. Roughly 07:00-17:10 weekdays and 06:30-17:40 weekends in peak season, 08:00-16:40 in winter. In sunrise season entry can start as early as 04:00.
- Lotus Peak and Tiandu Peak alternate. The two big front-mountain summits rotate on a roughly five-year cycle for trail recovery, so check which is open.
- Book entry and cable cars together through the Huangshan Tourism Official Platform mini program, real-name and typically a day or more ahead. English-language platforms are the usual workaround for foreign passports.
- Winter needs crampons. The stone staircases ice over, and some sections close.
What to carry
- Windproof and waterproof layers. The summit runs 8 to 10°C colder than the base and the weather turns within an hour.
- Grippy footwear. Paved stone stairs get slick; soft soles with tread beat stiff boots here.
- Water and food from Tangkou. Summit prices run several times the valley price; everything is carried up.
- A rain shell rather than an umbrella, which is a lightning risk on exposed ridge sections.
- Knee support if you have old injuries, since the descents are long, repetitive and steep.
Frequently asked questions
Should I hike up or take the cable car?
Take the cable car unless a full stair climb is the point of your trip. Hiking up the back side takes 3 to 4 hours of continuous stairs, the front 5 to 6. You still walk 6 to 7 hours on the ridge either way.
Which side should I go up?
Back mountain up, front mountain down. The back side from Yungu Temple is gentler and the best scenery arrives early rather than after three hours of stairs. Descending the steeper front side is easier than climbing it.
How long is the classic ridge circuit?
About 12 km and 6 to 7 hours including stops, with Yungu up, Yuping down and the West Sea funicular. Without the funicular it is longer and harder.
Can I see sunrise without staying on the mountain?
Not realistically. The first shuttle buses and cable cars do not put you on the ridge before first light, and the summit spots fill in the dark. Sleeping on the summit is the only reliable and only legal option.
When should I get up for sunrise?
04:00 to 04:30 in summer, 04:30 to 05:00 in spring and autumn, 05:30 to 06:00 in winter. Check the cloud forecast the night before; heavy low cloud means nothing to see.
Is the West Sea Grand Canyon open in winter?
No. It closes for winter maintenance from around 1 December to late March, funicular included, and can shut temporarily for ice, snow or strong wind. It reopened on 14 March in 2026.
How hard is Huangshan really?
The ridge walking is a long day of stone steps with no technical sections. Most reasonably fit adults manage it. The difficulty is volume rather than skill, and the descents are what people underestimate.
Do I need to book cable car tickets in advance?
Yes in peak season. Entry and cable car tickets share one real-name reservation system, and holiday slots sell out. Book through the official Huangshan Tourism mini program or an English-language platform that accepts foreign passports.
