Huangshan Travel Guide: The Yellow Mountains

Granite spires, cloud seas and the two-sided mountain · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Huangshan is the granite mountain Chinese landscape painting spent a thousand years trying to describe: not one peak but a network of ridges, stone staircases and cable car terminals spread across a large scenic area, sitting 1,600 to 1,864 metres above sea level. Two days is the right amount of time. One day is possible by cable car and feels rushed.

The mountain has a front side and a back side, and the two cable cars that serve them cost different amounts. Yuping on the front (south) side is ¥90 one way in high season, Yungu on the back (east) side is ¥80, and Taiping on the north gate is ¥80. The standard plan is up on Yungu, down on Yuping, which covers the ridge without repeating yourself.

Sleeping on the summit is expensive and requires booking weeks ahead. Six hotels sit on the mountain and nowhere else is legal. Dormitory beds run roughly ¥150-400 per person, private rooms ¥900-2,000 and up in peak season. You pay that because every mattress, bottle of water and bag of rice arrives on someone's back.

Why Huangshan, and not another mountain

China has famous mountains. Huangshan is the one that shaped an entire visual tradition: pines growing out of bare rock, cloud filling the valleys below the ridge line, granite shapes named things like Monkey Watching the Sea. It is the source material for shan shui painting, and it is still there.

Paved staircases run the whole ridge, cable cars move people up and down in minutes, and hotels and restaurants exist at altitude. This is a mountain you can see properly without being a mountaineer.

Huangshan is a UNESCO World Heritage site on both counts, natural and cultural, and the Huizhou villages of Hongcun and Xidi share the listing. That is why most people pair them.

How many days do you need?

TimeWhat you getVerdict
1 dayCable car up, ridge walk, cable car down. No sunrise, no West Sea Grand Canyon.Possible but thin
2 days, 1 nightSunrise and sunset on the summit, plus the canyon. The standard plan. The right answer
3 daysAdd a slow morning on the ridge and one of the villages.Comfortable
4-5 daysAdd Hongcun, Xidi, Tunxi Old Street, maybe Shexian or Qiyunshan.A full Huizhou trip

The reason two days beats one is not just sunrise. The mountain is often inside cloud, and a single day gives the weather one chance to ruin the trip. Two days gives it two, and the second morning is before the day-trippers arrive.

Front mountain and back mountain

Locals describe Huangshan as two halves. The front (south, or west) side is the steep, dramatic one, reached from Ciguang Pavilion by the Yuping cable car, holding the Guest-Greeting Pine, Lotus Peak and Tiandu Peak. The back (east) side is gentler, reached from Yungu Temple by the Yungu cable car, holding Shixin Peak, Beihai and the West Sea Grand Canyon.

Both lower stations sit in the same South Gate area near Tangkou, so the two sides are not separate trips, just two entrances to one ridge. The usual route enters from the back and exits from the front.

The three cable cars are not interchangeable Yungu and Yuping both start near Tangkou at the South Gate, but they end at opposite ends of the ridge. Taiping starts at the North Gate, roughly an hour away by road, and is the quietest of the three. Picking the wrong one adds a long bus transfer.

Summit hotels: what you pay for altitude

Sleeping on the mountain is the only reliable way to catch sunrise, and the single biggest cost of a Huangshan trip. Six properties operate up top: Beihai, Shilin, Xihai, Baiyun, Guangmingding Shanzhuang and Yupinglou, with Paiyunlou in the same West Sea cluster. Tents and benches are not an option; park staff move people on.

Standard doubles run roughly ¥900 to ¥2,000 depending on property, weekday and season, with April, May, September, October and public holidays at the top. Dormitory beds run about ¥150-400 per person. Hot water usually comes in a fixed evening window and checkout is early.

Book through the hotel sites, Trip.com and Ctrip, or a Tunxi travel agent. For April, May, September and October, four to six weeks ahead is realistic. Around the first weeks of October and May, every bed fills.

Getting there

Huangshan North Railway Station is the high-speed rail hub, about 45 km from the South Gate. Shanghai Hongqiao to Huangshan North takes 2.5 to 3 hours and ¥140-190 in second class. Hangzhou, Nanjing and Beijing have direct services.

Tunxi (Huangshan city) to Tangkou50 min-1h 10mAbout ¥20-30

Private cars are not allowed above the transfer centres. From Tangkou you ride the park shuttle to a cable car station or trailhead, a separate ¥19 each way on top of the mountain ticket and the cable car. Buses from Huangshan North run roughly every 30 minutes and stop in the evening, so confirm the last departure when you arrive.

Arriving in the afternoon is not the time to go up Most high-speed trains land in Huangshan in the afternoon. Going straight to the mountain leaves you climbing into fading light. Sleep in Tangkou or Tunxi the first night and start early.

Tickets and reservations

Entry is ¥190 in peak season (roughly March to November) and ¥150 in winter, with half-price concessions for students and some age groups. It covers the whole scenic area including the West Sea Grand Canyon and stays valid across a multi-day window, so a summit overnight works on one entry.

Booking is real-name and online through the Huangshan Tourism Official Platform mini program in WeChat or Alipay, at least a day ahead. Peak dates sell out. Foreign passports work as the ID document, but the interface is Chinese-first. Trip.com and TravelChinaGuide sell tickets in English with international cards, and a Tunxi hotel can book using your passport details.

When to go

WindowConditionsWhat it means
Late Mar-May10-20°C, changeable, greenGood hiking. Crowds build toward Labour Day.
Jun-AugWarm, humid, thunderstormsPeak domestic season. Rain clears the views or hides them entirely.
Sep-NovCool, clear, autumn colourThe strongest window. November is quieter than October.
Dec-FebSnow and rime ice, -5 to 5°CFewest people, lowest prices, canyon closed, crampons needed.

Sea of clouds is most likely around weather transitions, when an inversion traps cloud below the ridge. Late spring and autumn give the best odds. Cloud cover above 80% usually means fog and nothing else.

Dates to avoid: the first week of October (National Day), the first week of May (Labour Day) and Chinese New Year, when cable car queues form before dawn and summit rooms double.

Practical notes

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for Huangshan?

Two days with one night on the summit: sunset, sunrise and time in the West Sea Grand Canyon. One day works only by cable car both ways and skips the canyon.

Which cable car should I take?

Yungu up (back mountain, ¥80 high season), Yuping down (front mountain, ¥90). The back is gentler and denser in scenery; the front drops you near the Guest-Greeting Pine. Taiping serves the North Gate and is quietest, but adds a transfer.

Can I buy Huangshan tickets at the gate?

The scenic area runs a real-name reservation system, and on-site windows are not the primary channel. Book through the official Huangshan Tourism mini program or an English-language platform such as Trip.com.

Is it worth staying on the summit?

If sunrise is the point, yes. It is also the only way to walk the ridge before the day-trippers arrive. A night in Tangkou plus an early shuttle is the budget version.

How much does a summit hotel cost?

Dormitory beds run about ¥150-400 per person; private doubles roughly ¥900 to ¥2,000, peak dates at the top end and winter toward the bottom. Rates change, so check for your dates.

Is Huangshan doable for someone with average fitness?

Yes, if you use the cable cars. The ridge walks involve several hours of stone steps, up and down, but no technical climbing. Hiking up from the base is a different matter: three to four hours of stairs on the back side, five to six on the front.

Can I visit Huangshan as a day trip from Shanghai or Hangzhou?

Technically, on a very long day. Realistically it wastes the trip. Shanghai to Huangshan North is 2.5 to 3 hours each way, then 45 minutes to the gate, then the shuttle. Book a night in Tangkou or on the mountain instead. See how to buy train tickets in China.

What is the West Sea Grand Canyon and is it included?

The deep canyon on the west side of the ridge, walked via cliffside paths through two loops. Entry is included in the mountain ticket; the funicular is about ¥100 one way. Both close for winter maintenance from roughly December to late March.
