Short answer
There are three places to sleep, and they solve different problems. Tangkou is the base town at the south gate, full of guesthouses from ¥150 to ¥500, and it puts you at the transfer centre for the first shuttle. The summit has six hotels, dormitory beds from roughly ¥150 to ¥400 and private rooms from ¥900 to ¥2,500, and it is the only way to see sunrise without a night climb. Tunxi, the city centre with the old street, is cheap and comfortable but an hour from the gate.
If you can afford one night on the mountain, do it. Sunrise and the sea of clouds are the reason people come, and both happen before the first cable car brings anyone else up. One night on the summit plus one in Tangkou before or after covers the whole trip well.
Summit rooms are the constraint, not the price. Peak dates sell out four to six weeks ahead, and the six hotels are the only legal accommodation inside the scenic area. Book on the official Huangshan Tourism platform or a mainstream booking site that takes foreign passports.
The three options at a glance
| Summit hotels | Tangkou town | Tunxi (Huangshan City) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per night | Dorm ¥150-400; room ¥900-2,500 | ¥150-500 | ¥180-600 |
| Sunrise without climbing in the dark | Yes, 5-40 minutes on foot | No | No |
| Distance to the gate | Inside the scenic area | At the gate | About 1 hour by road |
| Food and water | Very expensive, limited choice | Normal prices, good choice | Cheapest and best |
| Baggage | You carry it up | Store it at the guesthouse | Store it at the hotel |
| Best for | Sunrise, sunset, photographers | Early starts, budget, two-day climbs | Arrival nights, the old street, Hongcun day trips |
Most trips end up combining two of them. Tangkou the night before, summit the night of the climb, Tunxi on the way out, is the standard shape and it works.
Sleeping on the summit
Six properties sit on top of Huangshan, and no other accommodation is permitted inside the scenic area. Every mattress, bottle of water and bag of rice reaches them on someone's back, which is why a basic room costs more than a business hotel in Shanghai.
| Hotel | Area | Room price, approx. | Why people pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beihai Hotel | North Sea | ¥1,200-1,800 | Closest to Refreshing Terrace for sunrise, near the Yungu cable car |
| Shilin Hotel | North Sea | ¥1,000-1,500 | Next to Beihai, slightly cheaper, near Monkey Watching the Sea |
| Xihai Hotel | West Sea | ¥1,100-2,000 | The most comfortable of the group, gateway to the West Sea Grand Canyon |
| Baiyun Hotel | Tianhai | ¥1,000-1,500 | Quieter, faces Lotus Peak, under 200m from Bright Summit |
| Guangmingding Shanzhuang | Bright Summit | ¥900-1,300 | Cheapest standard room, right at the main sunrise point |
| Yupinglou Hotel | Jade Screen | ¥900-1,400 | Beside the Welcoming Pine, closest to the Yuping cable car |
Those are annual ranges, and where you land depends on the date. Peak season covers April, May, September, October and every Chinese public holiday, with prices at the top of the band. December and February, outside Spring Festival, drop toward the bottom.
Dormitory beds
Shared rooms run ¥150-400 per bed, with four to twelve bunks, one pillow, one duvet and a bathroom down the corridor. Hot water is available in a fixed window, usually evening, and not outside it. Book four to six weeks ahead for peak dates, and note that during Golden Week and Spring Festival a dorm bed can pass ¥400.
Food and water up there
A bowl of noodles at a summit restaurant runs ¥40-60. Bottled water is ¥10-15. A buffet dinner for two can pass ¥400 without trying. Bring instant noodles, nuts, chocolate and a refillable bottle from Tangkou, where the same items cost a fraction. Most summit rooms have kettles, and there are hot water points along the trails.
Staying in Tangkou
Tangkou is a one-street town at the south gate, 45 to 60 minutes from Huangshan North Station. It exists for one reason: to put you close to the transfer centre. There are several hundred hotels, guesthouses and hostels, and it is the cheapest sensible base for the mountain.
- Prices:
¥150-500for a double, with basic guesthouses at the bottom and small boutique places near the top. Rooms on the main street cost more and are noisier. - Location matters more than the room. Ask for somewhere within a short walk of the Zhaixi transfer centre. A hotel at the edge of town adds 20 minutes to your pre-dawn start.
- What you get: normal-priced restaurants, convenience stores, luggage storage, and staff who will tell you which cable car to take based on the weather.
- What you do not get: sunrise. The first shuttle leaves around 06:30 and the first car up follows, which puts you on the ridge well after the light.
The trade-off is straightforward. A night in Tangkou costs a fifth of a summit room and gives you better food, a real shower and somewhere to leave your bag. It costs you sunrise, and sunrise is the thing.
Staying in Tunxi
Tunxi is the old part of Huangshan City, where the airport, the main bus station and Tunxi Old Street sit. It has a restored Song and Ming-era commercial street, Hui-style architecture, ink shops and decent restaurants, and it is an hour from the scenic area gate.
Use it for arrival and departure nights and as a base for Hongcun and Xidi, 60 to 80 minutes away by bus. Do not use it for climbing unless you enjoy a 90-minute commute before sunrise. Prices run ¥180-600, cheaper than Tangkou at the top end.
How to book, and the foreigner question
Summit hotels are the part people get wrong, so take it in order.
- Decide your dates, then book accommodation before the scenic ticketRooms on the summit are the scarcest item in the whole trip. Secure one before planning anything else around it.
- Book through a channel that accepts foreign passportsTrip.com and similar international sites list all six summit hotels and handle real-name registration with your passport number. The official Huangshan Tourism platform also works and is usually cheapest.
- Enter the passport number exactlyThe hotel files a real-name registration with the local police, and it has to match the document you carry. A mismatch causes problems at check-in and sometimes at the gate.
- Confirm the check-in desk and luggage arrangementsSome summit properties have reception at a lower station or ask you to leave bags at a cable car station. Ask before you climb.
- Keep a screenshot of the confirmationSignal on the ridge is patchy and the desk may not read English. A screenshot with the booking number, the hotel's Chinese name and a map pin solves it.
Foreigners are welcome at summit hotels. All six properties accept foreign guests with a valid passport, and the scenic area ticket is also sold to foreign passports. The one thing that catches people out is the police registration requirement, which is why the passport number must be right at booking.

Which should you pick?
| Your situation | Stay here |
|---|---|
| Two-day climb, want sunrise and sunset | One night on the summit, one in Tangkou |
| Tight budget, still want sunrise | Summit dormitory bed, food brought from Tangkou |
| Day trip only, no overnight | Tangkou, and accept you miss sunrise |
| Arriving late by train or plane | Tunxi for the first night, Tangkou after |
| Adding Hongcun and Xidi | Split between Tangkou and Tunxi |
| Photographer chasing the sea of clouds | Two summit nights, at Xihai or Beihai |
Frequently asked questions
Should I stay on the summit or in Tangkou?
On the summit if you want sunrise or sunset, because there is no way to see either from the base town. In Tangkou if budget matters more, or if you are doing a single-day climb. Many people do one night of each.
How much does a night on Huangshan cost?
A dormitory bed is ¥150-400 per person. A private room with a bathroom runs ¥900-2,500 depending on the hotel and date. Food is extra and expensive: ¥40-60 for a bowl of noodles, ¥10-15 for bottled water. Budget around ¥200 on top of the room for meals if you do not bring supplies.
How far ahead should I book a summit hotel?
Four to six weeks for April, May, September and October, and longer for Golden Week and Spring Festival. Outside peak dates, one to two weeks is often enough, and same-week availability happens in December and February. Summit beds are the first thing to sell out in the whole Huangshan area.
Can foreigners stay at the summit hotels?
Yes. All six summit properties accept foreign guests and register them with a passport. Provide the passport number at booking, exactly as it appears on the document, because it is used for the mandatory police registration.
Is there hot water in the summit hotels?
Yes, but in a fixed daily window, usually in the evening and typically something like 18:00 to 22:00. Outside those hours there is no shower. The window varies by hotel and season, so ask at check-in.
Where should I leave my luggage?
At your Tangkou guesthouse or the transfer centre, which has left-luggage counters. The cable car stations also have storage. Take only a small pack up, since you carry everything up stone steps.
Do I need to book the scenic area ticket separately?
Yes. The ticket is ¥190 in peak season and ¥150 in winter, sold by real name through the official platform, and valid for three days from first entry. That three-day validity is what makes a summit night practical.
Is Tunxi a good base for the mountain?
Not for climbing. It is an hour to the gate, so a sunrise attempt means leaving around 04:00 by car. It is a good base for arrival nights, for the old street, and for Hongcun and Xidi, 60 to 80 minutes away by bus.
