Short answer
Twenty-one days is the first trip length that can carry a second region. Yunnan and Zhangjiajie are each a seven-night addition, so 14 plus 7 is 21, and there is no honest way to run both: they sit in different corners of southern China, with no useful rail link and a flight needed at each end.
Branch A, Yunnan: Kunming 2 nights, Dali 2, Lijiang 3. The corridor runs south to north, every leg is a train of two hours or less, and you fly home from Lijiang.
Branch B, Zhangjiajie: Zhangjiajie city 1 night, Wulingyuan 3, back in the city 3. The park needs three days, and the city and the park are 25 to 30 km apart.
Both sit on the same spine: Beijing 3 nights, Pingyao 2, Xi'an 2, Chengdu 2, Shanghai 5. Days 1 to 14 are identical, so the choice costs nothing until day 15.
The route at a glance
The 14 nights before the branch are the same in both plans: Beijing 3, Pingyao 2, Xi'an 2, Chengdu 2, Shanghai 5. The detail is in our 14-day itinerary.
| Branch A: Yunnan | Branch B: Zhangjiajie | |
|---|---|---|
| Extra nights | 7 | 7 |
| Split | Kunming 2, Dali 2, Lijiang 3 | City 1, Wulingyuan 3, city 3 |
| Fly in | Shanghai, 3.5 to 4 hours nonstop, or Chengdu | Shanghai, about 2.5 hours, or Chengdu, 1.5 hours |
| Fly home from | Lijiang or Kunming | Zhangjiajie (DYG) or Changsha |
| Inside the branch | Train hops of 2 hours and under, all on 12306. See Kunming to Lijiang by high-speed train. | One base for the park, one for Tianmen Mountain; coaches and taxis, no metro |
| Best for | Villages, highland scenery, slow days | Vertical landscapes, cable cars, walking |
| The catch | Lijiang is at about 2,400 m; weather can close a cable car | Park entry is timed and capped; the last coach to Wulingyuan leaves about 17:00 |
Why not both
Kunming and Zhangjiajie are two provinces apart, Yunnan in the south-west and Hunan in the centre-south, with the Guizhou plateau between them. Chaining them means flying back through a hub and losing most of a day to the connection.
You could run both only by cutting the spine to seven nights: Beijing three, Xi'an two, Shanghai two. That drops Pingyao, Chengdu and every day trip.
Day by day
Both branches are 21 nights: the flight home is on the morning of day 22. Days 1 to 14 are shared.
Days 1 to 14, shared
| Day | Where | What |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beijing | Arrive, Tiananmen area, hutong dinner |
| 2 | Beijing | Forbidden City at opening, Jingshan, Temple of Heaven |
| 3 | Beijing | Great Wall at Mutianyu |
| 4 | Beijing to Pingyao | Morning train, 3h 35m to 4h |
| 5 | Pingyao | Walled town, Rishengchang, Shuanglin Temple |
| 6 | Pingyao to Xi'an | Same corridor, or change at Taiyuan South |
| 7 | Xi'an | Terracotta Army half day, Muslim Quarter |
| 8 | Xi'an to Chengdu | Train, 3h to 4h 30m |
| 9 | Chengdu | Panda base at opening, People's Park teahouse |
| 10 | Chengdu to Shanghai | Morning flight, 3 to 3.5 hours; the Bund after dark |
| 11 | Shanghai | Yu Garden early, Pudong or the Shanghai Museum |
| 12 | Shanghai | Hangzhou by high-speed train, 45 minutes, or Suzhou |
| 13 | Shanghai | Former French Concession or Zhujiajiao |
| 14 | Shanghai | Buffer day, and tomorrow's flight booking |
Branch A: Yunnan, days 15 to 21
| Day | Where | What |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Shanghai to Kunming | Nonstop flight, 3.5 to 4 hours; Green Lake in the evening |
| 16 | Kunming | Stone Forest as a full day, or Western Hills and Dianchi Lake |
| 17 | Kunming to Dali | Train, about 2 hours; Old Town and the Three Pagodas |
| 18 | Dali | Part of the Erhai Lake loop: Xizhou and Shuanglang |
| 19 | Dali to Lijiang | Train, 1.5 to 2.5 hours; Old Town, then Black Dragon Pool |
| 20 | Lijiang | Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a 5,596 m peak, by cable car |
| 21 | Lijiang | Shuhe and Baisha, or a slow Old Town day before flying home |
Branch B: Zhangjiajie, days 15 to 21
| Day | Where | What |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Shanghai to Zhangjiajie | Nonstop flight, about 2.5 hours; the airport is 5 km from town |
| 16 | Zhangjiajie to Wulingyuan | Coach to the East Gate, 40 minutes; Yuanjiajie and the Avatar pillars |
| 17 | Wulingyuan | Tianzi Mountain, then the Golden Whip Stream walk |
| 18 | Wulingyuan | Grand Canyon glass bridge, 35 to 40 minutes by coach |
| 19 | Wulingyuan to the city | Move in the morning; the Tianmen cableway base is downtown |
| 20 | Zhangjiajie city | Tianmen Mountain and the glass skywalk, a full day |
| 21 | Zhangjiajie city | Spare day, or the train to Changsha and the flight home |
If your first two weeks end in Chengdu instead of Shanghai, branch B is the same seven days after a flight of about 1.5 hours.
The long transfers
Only the flights and the Chengdu leg eat half a day. The Yunnan train hops do not.
| Leg | Mode | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai to Kunming | Nonstop flight | 3.5 to 4 hours | Several a day; no realistic rail alternative |
| Kunming to Dali | High-speed train | About 2 hours | Mostly from Kunming Railway Station |
| Dali to Lijiang | High-speed train | 1.5 to 2.5 hours | Lijiang station is 8 to 10 km south of the Old Town |
| Kunming to Lijiang (direct) | High-speed train | 3.5 to 4.5 hours | The skip-Dali option |
| Shanghai to Zhangjiajie | Nonstop flight | About 2.5 hours | Hehua airport (DYG) is 4.5 to 5 km from the centre |
| Shanghai to Zhangjiajie | High-speed train | 7h 15m to 9 hours | About four direct trains a day to Zhangjiajie West |
| Chengdu to Zhangjiajie | High-speed train | About 4 to 5.5 hours | Direct since June 2025; sources differ on the fastest time |
| Changsha to Zhangjiajie West | High-speed train | 1h 45m fastest, 2 to 3.5 hours typical | The fallback when the flight into DYG fails |
| Zhangjiajie West to Wulingyuan | Coach | About 40 minutes | Around ¥12 to ¥13, roughly 08:30 to 17:00 |
Check the departure station on your Kunming ticket: Kunming Railway Station is central, while Kunming South is in the suburbs. In Zhangjiajie, book to Zhangjiajie West, and know that the coaches on to Wulingyuan stop running in the late afternoon.

What to cut if a flight is cancelled
Summer storms and flow control are routine in southern China. Cut in this order.
- Cut the branch's extra sightseeing day firstBranch A: day 16, the Stone Forest. Branch B: day 18, the third park day.
- Then cut the second night in the middle stopBranch A: Dali's second night, taking the morning train to Lijiang instead. Branch B: two nights in the city, leaving via Changsha.
- Only then trim the baseShanghai from five nights to four, dropping the Hangzhou or Suzhou day trip on day 12.
- Take the train instead of waiting for a rebooked flightShanghai to Zhangjiajie West is 7h 15m to 9 hours, and Changsha connects to both branches by rail.
- Know the refund rulesOn 12306: free more than 8 days out, 5% from 48 hours to 8 days, 10% from 24 to 48 hours, 20% inside 24 hours, minimum ¥2.
- Keep one empty night before the international flightWhatever city the branch ends in, that night stands between a domestic delay and a missed long-haul flight.
Frequently asked questions
Is 21 days enough for both Yunnan and Zhangjiajie?
No. Each is a seven-night addition on a 14-night spine, so 21 nights covers one. Both would mean cutting the spine to seven nights, losing Pingyao and Chengdu.
Should I add Yunnan or Zhangjiajie to a 14-day trip?
Neither fits. Fourteen days is the spine plus one extra stop, and both need seven nights to justify the flight.
Can Kunming, Dali and Lijiang be done in seven nights?
Yes, with the split above: two nights in Kunming, two in Dali, three in Lijiang. Seven is the shortest version that holds together; five gives you one night in Dali.
How long is the flight from Shanghai to Kunming?
About 3.5 to 4 hours nonstop, with several departures a day. Rail is not realistic at this distance, so book it with your long-haul tickets.
Is there a direct train from Chengdu to Zhangjiajie?
Yes. Direct high-speed services began in June 2025 and take about 4 to 5.5 hours, roughly five to seven a day. Sources differ on the fastest time, so check 12306.
Do I need a visa for a 21-day trip to China?
Depends on your passport. Citizens of 50 countries enter visa-free for up to 30 days under the unilateral scheme, counted from the day after arrival, and 21 nights fits inside that. The 240-hour transit waiver is only 10 days and does not cover this trip. US citizens need a visa.
Where should I sleep in Zhangjiajie, the city or Wulingyuan?
Both. Wulingyuan is beside the East Gate and saves a 35 to 45 minute drive each way, so sleep there for park days. The city has the Tianmen cableway base and the airport.
Is altitude a problem in Lijiang?
Lijiang sits at about 2,400 m, high enough that sleep can suffer for a night. Put the mountain on your last full day, not your arrival day, and do not fly straight into Shangri-La at about 3,300 m.
