Short answer
Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) sits on the west edge of the city, roughly 15 km from Dadonghai and the downtown core and only 5 to 10 km from the Sanya Bay beach strip. There is no metro inside the city, so your airport-to-hotel leg is a bus, a taxi, a ride-hail car, or the island's high-speed railway, which has a station attached to the terminal.
The cheapest sane option is the airport shuttle bus. Line 1 runs to Dadonghai and Yalong Bay, Line 2 to Haitang Bay and the duty-free mall, and both cost ¥25. Line 1 runs 18 times a day, timed to the last arrival of the night, so it works even for late flights.
For Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay with luggage, a taxi or DiDi is worth the money: those bays are 30 to 35 km out and the meter runs to roughly ¥100-140. For Sanya Bay or Dadonghai, the bus is fine and the taxi is cheap.
The airport in one paragraph
Phoenix Airport is small and easy to walk. It has three terminals, and T3 is not joined to T1 and T2, so transfers between them use a shuttle. All three have taxi ranks and ride-hail pick-up points.
The most useful thing to know is that the island's ring railway stops at the airport. If you are heading to Haikou, Wanning or Boao, you can walk out of arrivals and onto a train.
Distances: about 10 km from Sanya Railway Station, 15 km from Dadonghai, 30 km from Yalong Bay and 34 km from Haitang Bay. Those bays sit on opposite sides of the city, so your hotel choice decides your transfer cost before you land.
Option 1: the airport shuttle bus
Two dedicated airport bus lines serve the resort bays. Both leave from opposite Gate 5 in the domestic arrivals hall, on the first floor of Complex C.
| Line | Route | Fare | Departures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport Bus 1 | Airport → Sanya Bay → downtown (bus station) → Dadonghai → Yalong Bay hotels | ¥25 | 18 per day, from around 09:00 to 02:00, timed to the last flight |
| Airport Bus 2 | Airport → Haitang Bay hotels → Haitang Bay duty-free mall | ¥25 | 9 per day: 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 14:30, 16:00, 17:30, 19:00, 20:30, 22:00 |
| Long-distance lines | Airport → Baoting / Wanning / Basuo (Dongfang) | ¥45 / ¥70 / ¥90 | 2 per day per destination |
Line 1 is the workhorse. It stops at the Sanya Bay hotel strip, the downtown bus station, Dadonghai, then follows the coast road east to the Yalong Bay hotel zone. From a small guesthouse off the main road you will still need a short taxi.
Line 2 goes to Haitang Bay, the far north-east corner where Atlantis and the CDF duty-free mall are. Nine departures a day is thin and the last is at 22:00, so a late arrival means a taxi. It is still far cheaper than the ¥110 plus fare to the same bay.
Option 2: taxi and DiDi
Sanya taxis are metered, and the airport publishes the rates. The meter starts at ¥11 for a class-one car and ¥10 for a class-two car for the first 2.5 km. Then ¥2.4 or ¥2.2 per km, rising past the 10 km mark to ¥3.6 or ¥3.3 per km.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Meter estimate | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanya Bay (Coconut Dream Corridor) | 5-10 km | ¥25-40 | 15-20 min |
| Sanya Railway Station | 10.7 km | ¥30-45 | 25 min off-peak |
| Dadonghai | ~15 km | ¥45-65 | 25-35 min |
| Yalong Bay | ~30 km | ¥100-130 | 35-45 min |
| Haitang Bay | ~34 km | ¥110-145 | 40-55 min |
Calculated from the airport's published meter rates. Traffic and route choice will move them.
Taxi ranks are outside arrivals: opposite Gates 4 and 5 at T1 and T2, and outside Gate 01 at T3. Ride-hail pick-up is separate. At T1 and T2 walk to the area opposite Gates 2 and 3, enter through the east or west ride-hail entrance and follow the crossing. At T3 take a shuttle from Gate 2 first.
Option 3: city buses
If you are staying in the city rather than a resort, ordinary city buses leave from the bus park on the first floor of car park 2, opposite Gate 5 of domestic arrivals. The same walk as the airport shuttle, different vehicle.
- To Sanya Railway Station: routes 409 and 425 call at the airport on the way to the station.
- To Yalong Bay: routes 124 and 127 run to the Yalong Bay bus hub. Slower than the shuttle bus, but cheaper.
- Around the west side: routes 108 and 136, plus 33 toward Nantian.
Buses cost a few yuan, paid by Alipay or WeChat ride code. Fares are distance-based on some routes, so scan on boarding and again on alighting.
Option 4: the ring railway from the terminal
The Hainan Ring Railway has a station connected to the airport terminal, entered from the west side of T1. It is the fastest way out if your destination has a station: Lingshui, Wanning, Boao, Qionghai, Wenchang or Haikou.
| Station | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phoenix Airport (凤凰机场站) | Airport itself | Attached to the terminal. West loop only. |
| Sanya (三亚站) | Downtown, Dadonghai, Sanya Bay | The main hub. About 120 trains a day, 10 km out. |
| Yalong Bay (亚龙湾站) | Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay resorts | East loop. Saves the long drive around the bay. |
| Yazhou (崖州站) | Nanshan Temple, Yazhou old town | Fewer trains. West side. |
Two traps. Sanya has four railway stations and the names are not interchangeable: a ticket to "Sanya" when you want Yalong Bay leaves you 25 km from your hotel. And the airport station only sees trains on the western half of the loop, so it does not run to Yalong Bay.

Getting around once you are here
Sanya has no metro. The city is a long coastal strip and the gaps between the bays are 20 to 40 km of road, which shapes everything about how you move.
- DiDi is the default for most visitors: metered, priced before you accept, and no language problem. Set it up and bind a card before you arrive.
- Taxis are plentiful in town and at the airport, rarer out at Yalong and Haitang Bay after dark. Hotel desks will call one.
- The tram (Line T1) runs from Sanya Railway Station to the downtown river area, 15 stops, flat
¥3, about 35 minutes. It is more sightseeing than commuting, and two stops near the river mouth are suspended for construction. - Buses are cheap and cover the city, but service thins out in the evening and the resort bays are poorly served after dark.
- Renting a car makes sense if you will cross between bays repeatedly or see Nanshan, Tianya Haijiao and Wuzhizhou Island in one trip. Use a proper platform, not a roadside operator.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Sanya Phoenix Airport from the city?
About 15 km from Dadonghai and the downtown core, 10 km from Sanya Railway Station and only 5 to 10 km from the Sanya Bay beach strip. Yalong Bay is about 30 km and Haitang Bay about 34 km, on the far side.
Does Sanya have a metro?
No. There is a single tram line downtown and the ring railway links the main towns, but your everyday transport is bus, taxi, DiDi or rental car.
Is there an airport bus to Yalong Bay?
Yes. Line 1 runs through Sanya Bay, downtown and Dadonghai to the Yalong Bay hotel zone. It costs ¥25 and runs 18 times a day, with the last departure around 02:00 to meet the final arrival. The stop is opposite Gate 5.
How much is a taxi from the airport to Dadonghai?
The published meter is ¥11 flag fall for the first 2.5 km, then ¥2.4 per km, rising to ¥3.6 per km past 10 km. For the 15 km run to Dadonghai that is around ¥45-65. The meter is the final word.
Can I take a train from the airport?
Yes. The station is connected to the terminal, entered from the west side of T1. It is useful for Haikou, Wanning, Boao and Lingshui. It does not run to Yalong Bay, because the airport is on the western half of the loop.
Which railway station should I book for Yalong Bay?
Yalong Bay station (亚龙湾站), not Sanya station. Sanya has four: Sanya, Yalong Bay, Phoenix Airport and Yazhou. A ticket to "Sanya" when your hotel is in Yalong Bay leaves you about 25 km away.
Is DiDi easy to use at Sanya airport?
Yes. There are signed pick-up areas at T1 and T2, reached through the east or west ride-hail entrance opposite Gates 2 and 3. At T3 take a shuttle from Gate 2 to a temporary car park. Order in the app and confirm the pick-up point with the driver in chat.
What if my flight lands after midnight?
Line 1 still runs, with the last departure around 02:00 timed to the final arrival. DiDi operates through the night and is usually better for a late arrival to Yalong or Haitang Bay, where you will want a door-to-door drop.
