Short answer
In Sanya the bay matters more than the hotel. The four main bays sit 10 to 35 km apart, there is no metro, and a bad bay choice means an hour of driving every time you want dinner.
For a first trip, stay in Dadonghai. It is in town, you can walk to the beach, restaurants and shops, it has the best value rooms of any beachfront area, and rides to everywhere else are the shortest in the city.
Stay in Yalong Bay if the beach is the holiday and you will eat at your hotel. Stay in Sanya Bay if you arrive late, leave early or want to spend less. Stay in Haitang Bay only if the resort is the destination.
Why the bay decides your trip
Sanya is a 30 km coastal strip with a few resort clusters strung along it, and the road between them eats your day. Dadonghai to Yalong Bay is a 25 to 45 minute drive; Dadonghai to Haitang Bay is 45 to 70 minutes.
Second, not all of these beaches are swimmable. Yalong Bay is the classic swimming beach. Dadonghai and Sanya Bay are public and less clear but fine for a dip. Haitang Bay faces rougher surf and parts of it are regularly closed to swimmers, which is why the hotels there push their pools so hard.
Third, prices swing hard. A room costing ¥600 in November can be ¥1,500 or more during Lunar New Year.
The four bays side by side
| Bay | Best for | Beach and swimming | Typical room rate | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dadonghai 大东海 | First trips, food, walking, best value | Public, shallow, swimmable, less clear than Yalong | ¥300-700 budget; ¥800-1,600 branded | Crowds, no privacy |
| Yalong Bay 亚龙湾 | The classic beach holiday, couples, families | Best in Sanya: fine white sand, calm clear water, easy swimming | ¥700-3,000 | 25 km from town; local food scarce, resort dining costly |
| Sanya Bay 三亚湾 | Value, sunsets, late arrivals and early flights | Long public beach, weakest water and sand of the four | ¥250-1,500; apartments ¥250-600 | Parts back onto a busy road; quality varies by block |
| Haitang Bay 海棠湾 | Luxury resorts, families, duty-free shopping | Wide and photogenic, rougher surf, swimming often restricted | ¥1,000-4,000+ | Furthest from town, around 34 km; evenings stay on resort |
Rate ranges are indicative for normal periods and shift sharply around Chinese holidays.
Dadonghai: the easy default
Dadonghai is the only bay that behaves like a neighbourhood. There is a beach, and behind it a grid of streets with restaurants, noodle shops, convenience stores, a mall, bars and a night market. You can swim in the morning, walk out for Hainan rice noodles, ride to Luhuitou Park for sunset, and be back for dinner without planning.
The beach is public and busy: domestic tour groups, families and long-stay visitors from Russia and Central Asia who have come here for years. The water is shallower and less clear than Yalong Bay, the price of being in town.
Where it wins is logistics: shortest rides to the other bays, Luhuitou and the downtown seafood markets minutes away, and a hospital nearby. If you want to see Sanya rather than sit in it, this is the base.
Yalong Bay: pay for the beach
Yalong Bay is the answer if your idea of Sanya is white sand, calm water and a resort pool. The bay runs about 8 km and has the clearest, calmest water of the four, which is why the five-star names cluster here. It is prettier than Dadonghai, more polished than Sanya Bay and less remote than Haitang Bay.
What it is not is convenient. Yalong Bay is roughly 25 km from downtown and there is very little to walk to after dark. Most meals happen in hotels or resort dining complexes, priced accordingly. To eat in town every night, budget ¥60-120 each way in a DiDi.
There is a railway station at Yalong Bay on the ring line, useful if you arrive by train from Haikou or Wanning or are heading out that way. It does not help you reach downtown Sanya, which is a drive.
Sanya Bay: value and airport convenience
Sanya Bay is the long strip on the west side, nearest the airport, running past the palm-lined promenade locals call the Coconut Dream Corridor. It suits a short stay, a late arrival, or a longer stay where you want an apartment with a washing machine and simple restaurants.
The catch is that "Sanya Bay" covers a lot of ground. One visitor stays near the promenade and gets sunset walks. Another ends up in a tower block across a busy road and wonders why the beach feels like an afterthought. Both describe Sanya Bay accurately.
The water and sand are the weakest of the four bays. Come for the price, the sunsets and the 15 to 20 minute airport run, not for the swimming.
Haitang Bay: the resort bubble
Haitang Bay is the newest and most expensive cluster, in the far north-east corner. This is where the big destination resorts are, along with the world's largest duty-free mall and Atlantis with its water park. If your trip is a resort holiday with shopping attached, it works.
Two things to accept before booking. It is about 34 km from the airport and further still from downtown, so you will not casually pop into town for dinner. And the sea is rougher than the other bays, with stretches regularly closed to swimmers, so the pool is the real swimming option.
Free shuttles run between some Haitang Bay hotels and the duty-free mall, which softens the isolation. Airport bus Line 2 also runs here at ¥25, but only nine times a day and not late.
What each base costs you in transport
DiDi fares, approximate and traffic dependent. These should decide your bay.
| Route | Time | Approx. cost |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Sanya Bay | 15-20 min | ¥25-40 |
| Airport to Dadonghai | 25-35 min | ¥45-65 |
| Airport to Yalong Bay | 35-45 min | ¥100-130 |
| Airport to Haitang Bay | 40-55 min | ¥110-145 |
| Dadonghai to Yalong Bay | 25-45 min | ¥60-120 |
| Dadonghai to Haitang Bay | 45-70 min | ¥120-220 |
| Yalong Bay to Haitang Bay | 35-55 min | ¥90-170 |
How to choose, by trip length
| Nights | Recommendation | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Sanya Bay or Dadonghai | No long transfers, everything walkable. Skip Haitang Bay. |
| 3-4 | Dadonghai, or Yalong Bay if the beach is the point | Enough for Luhuitou, Nanshan or a bay day without a resort bubble. |
| 5-7 | Split the stay | Dadonghai for the city and the food, then Yalong or Haitang for a resort finish. |
| Honeymoon or big budget | Yalong Bay, then Haitang Bay | Yalong to swim in the sea, Haitang for the newest resort and duty-free shopping. |
The split stay is the one move in Sanya that genuinely pays off, because the bays feel different enough to justify the unpacking. It does not work on a two-night trip.
Whichever bay you pick, the airport leg is the same problem for everyone. Our Sanya airport transfer guide covers the buses, the taxi meter and the rail station inside the terminal.
Booking practicalities
- Foreign guests. Not every Chinese hotel is registered to accept foreign passports, and small guesthouses and apartments are the usual offenders. Confirm before booking, or check our hotels that accept foreign guests guide.
- Registration and payment. Hotels register your stay with the police for you; in an apartment you must register your own address within 24 hours. Most hotel desks take foreign cards, but everything else wants Alipay or WeChat Pay.
- Season. November to March is dry, warm and busy, and prices track that. Summer is wet and typhoon-prone.
Frequently asked questions
Which bay should I stay in for my first trip to Sanya?
Dadonghai. It is in town, so you can walk to the beach, restaurants and shops, it has the best value rooms of any beachfront area, and rides to the other bays are shortest. For a pure beach holiday, choose Yalong Bay.
Which bay has the best swimming?
Yalong Bay: fine white sand, clear water and calm waves. Dadonghai and Sanya Bay are swimmable but public and busier. Haitang Bay has the roughest surf and often restricts swimming.
Is Haitang Bay worth it?
Yes, if the resort is the whole point. It has the newest hotels, the world's largest duty-free mall and Atlantis. It is also 34 km from the airport and often closed to swimmers.
How much do hotels cost in Sanya?
Outside peak periods, a mid-range room in Dadonghai runs roughly ¥800-1,600 and a five-star in Yalong Bay ¥1,000-2,800. Around Lunar New Year and the May and October breaks, expect double or triple that.
Which bay is closest to the airport?
Sanya Bay, at 5 to 10 km, a 15 to 20 minute drive. Dadonghai is about 15 km, Yalong Bay around 30 km and Haitang Bay about 34 km. That is the main reason to pick it for a one-night stopover.
Can I stay in one bay and visit the others?
Yes, but budget the time. Dadonghai to Yalong Bay is 25 to 45 minutes and to Haitang Bay 45 to 70 minutes, with no metro. Two other bays in one day means most of it is spent driving.
Is there anywhere to stay that is not a big resort?
Yes. Dadonghai and Sanya Bay both have smaller hotels, hostels and serviced apartments, with dorm beds and simple rooms from around ¥80-300. Check the property can register foreign guests before booking.
Should I split my stay between two bays?
On a trip of five nights or more, yes: Dadonghai or Sanya Bay first for the city and the food, then Yalong or Haitang for a resort finish. On a shorter trip it is not worth the unpacking.
