Day Trips from Sanya: Islands, Rainforest and the Giant Guanyin

Wuzhizhou, Fenjiezhou, Nanshan, Yanoda and the beaches, compared · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Wuzhizhou Island is the one day trip almost everyone takes, and it earns it: about 40 minutes east of downtown near Haitang Bay, with the clearest water in the area, the best snorkelling within reach of the city, and the ferry crossing included in the ticket. Expect around ¥136 off-peak and ¥144 in peak season at the gate, roughly ¥133 booked online.

Everything else points in a different direction. Nanshan and West Island sit west of the city; Yalong Bay, Wuzhizhou and the rainforest parks sit east; Sanya Bay runs along the downtown waterfront. Plan by side of the city rather than by list, or the day disappears in the car.

For a half day with no ferry involved, Luhuitou is the easiest and cheapest: a hill on a peninsula 3km from downtown, around ¥45 to enter, best arrived late afternoon for the sunset and the city panorama below.

The islands sell packages bundling transport, gear or lunch on top, and prices move with season. Check the official channel for the day you are going.

Wuzhizhou Island

Wuzhizhou is a small island in Haitang Bay with coral reef offshore, reached by a ferry of about 15 to 20 minutes from the Houhai pier, and the ticket covers the crossing and island entry. Last admission is in the mid-afternoon, so a late start is not an option. The island works in two halves: a coastal path of about 2km with rock pools and a shaded trail up to the high point, and the water, for snorkelling off the designated beach, diving and jet skis.

Tickets are around ¥136 off-season and ¥144 in peak season at the counter, about ¥133 booked a day ahead. Combination tickets that add gear, lunch or a speedboat cost far more and tie you to specific operators; the plain ferry and entry ticket is what matters. Bus 28 from Sanya bus terminal reaches Houhai village with the pier a 10-minute walk away, but it is slow; a DiDi takes around 40 minutes from downtown for roughly ¥80-120 each way, which is what most visitors do.

Fenjiezhou Island

Fenjiezhou sits off Lingshui, over an hour from Sanya, with a crossing of about 10 to 15 minutes. It is the divers' alternative to Wuzhizhou: some of Hainan's best visibility, and a fraction of the crowd.

The ticket is entry plus return boat in one price, listed at around ¥127 off-peak and ¥132 in peak season under provincial price guidance, with online discounts near ¥119, and a shuttle cart on the island is around ¥40 extra. The route is the high-speed train to Lingshui station plus a taxi of about 20 minutes, so allow two hours each way. That is a long day, which is why Fenjiezhou is usually the second island rather than the first.

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone

Nanshan is a coastal Buddhist site west of the city in Yazhou district, and the centrepiece is the 108m statue of Guanyin on an artificial island just offshore. Around it are temples, gardens and the Gate of Non-Duality, with a free shuttle inside the park because the site is spread out. Allow three to four hours, around 40 minutes by car from downtown, with adult tickets around ¥130. It fits a half day on the west side, alongside West Island or Tianya Haijiao.

Yanoda rainforest

Yanoda is in Sandao Town, Baoting, around 35km from downtown, and it is the rainforest day rather than the beach day: boardwalks through dense canopy, waterfalls, a zip line over the valley and a wading stretch. Last admission is around an hour before closing.

Tickets are sold in tiers, from entry alone to packages including the shuttle, the zip line and the slides, and the price varies by season. The official channel is the only reliable source, so check it the day before. Allow four to six hours including travel, and take a light rain layer, because the paths get slick.

Yalong Bay forest park

The Tropical Paradise Forest Park sits on the ridge above Yalong Bay, a half-day outing best done in the morning, for the view back down over the beach and the glass walkway. Tickets follow the provincial framework: around ¥140 per adult off-peak from May to September and around ¥158 in peak season, both including the internal shuttle bus.

Luhuitou, and the half-day option

Luhuitou is a small hill on a peninsula at the edge of downtown, three sides facing water, with the story of the turning deer carved into the hillside. The summit gives you the whole bay, the high-rise strip and the islands beyond, which makes it the best place in the city for a sunset.

Entry is around ¥45, with a shuttle cart at roughly ¥15-28 depending on the ticket bundle, and it is a steep but short walk without the cart. Arrive at around 17:00, ride up and walk down, so you are on the summit for the light; two hours covers it. The small Coconut Island (椰子洲岛) is the least developed of the islands here, with limited and changeable access, so check locally before arranging a trip out.

Which beach: Yalong Bay, Dadonghai or Sanya Bay

BeachWater and sandCrowds and costWho it suits
Yalong BayBest sand and clearest water of the three, reef offshoreResort strip, quietest beach, highest hotel pricesSwimming, and families who want the beach at the hotel
DadonghaiGood water, busier, more boat trafficThe city beach, busy at weekends, cheapest food and hotels nearbyShort trips, budget stays, evenings out
Sanya BayLong sand, flatter and less clear waterCheapest of the three, quiet on weekdaysSunsets along the Coconut Dream Corridor, cheap hotels, running and cycling

The beach is what happens around the day trip rather than instead of it. Stay at Yalong Bay if the sea is the point, at Dadonghai if restaurants and transport on foot matter, on Sanya Bay if the budget does.

Practical notes

One good day, three parts Leave at 07:30 for Wuzhizhou, ferry over, swim and walk the island until early afternoon, then ferry back and stop at Yalong Bay for a late lunch and a swim. Luhuitou for sunset if energy is left.

Frequently asked questions

Wuzhizhou or Fenjiezhou, which island?

Wuzhizhou for the easier trip and better snorkelling, about 40 minutes from downtown. Fenjiezhou for diving and fewer people, at the cost of a train to Lingshui plus a taxi, over an hour each way.

How much are the island tickets?

Wuzhizhou is around ¥136 off-peak and ¥144 in peak season at the gate, roughly ¥133 online, ferry included. Fenjiezhou is around ¥127 off-peak and ¥132 in peak season including the boat. Packages that add gear, lunch or activities cost much more.

Is Wuzhizhou good for snorkelling?

Yes, it is the best snorkelling near Sanya. There is reef off the designated beach section, gear rents on the island, and visibility beats the city beaches. Book diving or a guided trip through a reputable operator to go further out, and expect the water near the pier to be crowded later in the morning.

Can I pay with a foreign credit card at the ticket office?

Usually not directly. Island and attraction counters take Alipay, WeChat Pay or cash, and foreign cards work through those two apps rather than at the window. Set the apps up before arriving, and carry cash for small vendors around the piers.

How do I get to Wuzhizhou without a car?

Bus 28 from Sanya bus terminal to Houhai village, then a 10-minute walk to the pier: cheap and slow. A DiDi takes around 40 minutes from downtown for roughly ¥80-120 each way. Allow extra time for the afternoon ferry queue on the way back.

Is Nanshan worth half a day?

Yes, if the 108m Guanyin statue and the temple gardens appeal. It is about 40 minutes west of downtown by car, adult tickets are around ¥130, and three to four hours covers the main sites using the free internal shuttle. Pair it with West Island or Tianya Haijiao, both on the same side.
