Sanya Travel Guide: China's Tropical South

Hainan's beach city, the visa question, and how to plan around the weather · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Sanya sits at 18° north on Hainan Island's southern tip, the same latitude as Hawaii. It is the only place in China with a tropical beach holiday: warm sea in January, palm-lined bays, coral islands offshore, and a winter escape culture that pulls half the country south from November to March.

Three days is the honest minimum and four or five is better, because the attractions are strung along 40km of coast. There is no metro, so you move by taxi, DiDi and bus, and your choice of hotel decides your transfer times before you land.

The visa rules here are separate from the rest of China. Hainan runs its own 30-day visa-free scheme for 61 countries, and you must enter through a Hainan port to use it. If your passport is on China's nationwide visa-free list, that one is simpler and covers the whole country.

Why Sanya, and not somewhere else

Sanya is where China goes for a winter beach. It has no imperial history and no dynastic architecture worth a detour; the city is a modern resort town. The Li and Miao communities of the interior are the genuine local culture. The trip works if the goal is warm water, an island day, fresh seafood and a resort, and it is a poor fit for anyone hoping for a city that looks like Beijing or Xi'an.

How many days do you need?

TimeWhat you getVerdict
1 dayOne bay, one sunset, one seafood dinnerNot worth the flight
2 daysOne city day, one island or beach dayThe minimum that works
3 daysAdd Yalong Bay plus an island or rainforest dayComfortable
4-5 daysAdd Nanshan, a second island, or a rail day tripWhere it stops feeling rushed

Two days covers the city and one bay. Three adds an island or the rainforest without cutting either short. Beyond that the value comes from slowing down, or from the ring railway to Lingshui, Wanning and Haikou.

The visa question, which is different here

China runs two visa-free systems that both apply in Sanya, and which one you use depends on your passport.

The nationwide scheme. 79 countries (29 mutual agreements plus 50 unilateral) can enter China at any open port for up to 30 days for tourism, business or visiting family. If your passport is on that list, use it: it covers the whole country, so you can fly into Sanya and leave from Beijing.

The Hainan-only scheme. A separate list of 61 countries can enter Hainan Province without a visa for up to 30 days, for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment and sports events. It exists mainly for passports not on the nationwide list. As of 20 August 2026 the list runs to 61 countries, after Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were added.

The overlap is why Sanya is unusually easy to reach Combining both schemes plus 240-hour transit, nationals of 88 countries can enter Hainan without a visa by one route or another. American passports are not on China's nationwide list but are on the Hainan 61, so a 30-day visa-free Sanya trip works where a 30-day Beijing trip does not.

When to come

The dry season runs November to April and the wet season May to October. The trade-off is crowds and price against weather.

PeriodWeatherWhat to know
Nov-Dec20-28°C, dry, sea settlingBest overall. Late November to early December is the sweet spot.
Jan-Feb19-27°C, dry, cool eveningsPeak season. Chinese New Year sends rates up 2 to 3 times.
Mar-Apr22-31°C, dry, warm seaClearest water of the year. Best for diving and island trips.
May-Jun25-33°C, wet season startsCheap and humid, rain mostly in the afternoon.
Jul-Sep26-33°C, heaviest rainPeak typhoon risk. Island ferries and beaches close in storms.

October stays wet until mid-month and includes National Day from 1 to 7 October, the busiest week of the year. September is the wettest and cheapest month. Sea temperatures run from about 23°C in January to 29°C in midsummer, so swimming works all year. Pick November or March if you can choose.

Which bay to sleep in

Sanya's coast runs roughly east to west and the four bays are not interchangeable. This decides your taxi costs, your dinner options and your swimming.

BayCharacterTypical rateMain catch
Sanya BayClosest to the airport, 22km sunset promenade¥200-400Coarser sand, less clear water
DadonghaiCentral, walkable restaurants and nightlife¥300-500Crowded, fewer luxury hotels
Yalong BayBest sand and clearest water, resort strip¥800-3,00030km from town, resort-priced food
Haitang BayNewest luxury, Atlantis, duty-free mall¥1,000-4,000Waves make sea swimming unreliable

For a first trip with two or three nights, Dadonghai is the most forgiving base: beach, food and transport in walking distance. Yalong Bay is better if the beach is the whole point, and Sanya Bay suits budget stays and early flights. See Sanya's beaches compared and where to stay in Sanya.

What to see

Wuzhizhou Island

The best single beach day in Sanya. A small island off Haitang Bay reached by a 20-minute ferry, with white sand, snorkelling and a long list of water sports. Tickets run about ¥133-168 including the ferry, cheapest on the official mini-program. Boarding stops around 16:00 and daily visitors are capped, so book ahead from November to April.

Yalong Bay

A 7 to 8km crescent of fine pale sand backed by the densest cluster of five-star resorts in the city. The beach is public and free and the water is the calmest in Sanya, but the bay is self-contained, so every meal outside a hotel is a taxi ride.

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone

A large Buddhist complex 40km west of the centre, built around a 108-metre Guanyin statue standing in the sea. Modern and enormous rather than ancient. Entry is around ¥150, plus ¥20-30 for the internal cart, worth taking because the site is long.

Tianya Haijiao

Two inscribed boulders on the shore 23km west of town, marking what Chinese tradition called the end of the earth. Two to three hours, and it pairs with Nanshan on the same day.

Luhuitou Park

The hill at the southern tip of the peninsula, 181 metres up, with the best sunset view in the city. Entry is around ¥45 plus ¥15 for the cart, and it is ten minutes from Dadonghai.

Yanoda Rainforest

A rainforest park in Baoting county, 35km from downtown, with canopy walks, waterfalls and Li cultural exhibits. Entry is about ¥168 including the shuttle, and it is the standard wet-season substitute when the sea is closed.

What it costs

ItemTypical cost
Airport bus to the bays¥25 per person
DiDi across town¥15-40
Wuzhizhou Island, incl. ferry¥133-168
Nanshan, entry plus cart¥150 plus ¥20-30
Seafood dinner at First Market¥100-200 per person
Mid-range hotel, Dadonghai¥300-500 per night

Payment is the thing to sort out before arrival. Alipay and WeChat Pay both take foreign Visa and Mastercard once passport verification is done in the app, and tickets for the big attractions are easier to book online, in English, with an international card.

Practical notes

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Sanya?

It depends on your passport, and the answer differs from the rest of China. Hainan runs its own 30-day visa-free entry for 61 countries, but you must enter through a Hainan port and stay in the province. Separately, 79 countries have nationwide visa-free entry to China for up to 30 days. Check both lists on the National Immigration Administration site.

Can I visit the rest of China on the Hainan visa-free scheme?

No. The scheme limits you to Hainan Province. To continue to the mainland, a visa has to be obtained from the exit-entry administration in Hainan first. If your passport is on China's nationwide visa-free list, that scheme covers the whole country instead.

How many days should I spend in Sanya?

Three is comfortable: one city day, one beach day and one island day. Two covers the city and one bay. Four or five adds Nanshan and the west coast, or a rail day trip.

What is the best time to go?

November and March, in the dry season with warm sea and moderate crowds. December to February has the best weather, the highest prices and Chinese New Year crowds. July to September is cheapest and wettest, with typhoon risk.

Is Sanya good for swimming?

Yes, though the bays differ. Yalong Bay has the calmest water and lifeguarded zones, Dadonghai is fine and central, Sanya Bay has coarser sand and murkier water, and Haitang Bay often has strong waves. In typhoon season check the flags and stay in marked zones.

Is there a metro in Sanya?

No. There is no metro and no suburban rail inside the city. You move by DiDi, metered taxis at ¥10-15 flagfall, city buses at ¥1-5, and a short tram along the Sanya Bay waterfront. The ring railway is for travel between towns.
