Short answer
Two days in Sanya splits cleanly: one day in the city and on the nearest beach, one day out on the water. Stay at Dadonghai for both nights, because it puts a swimmable beach, a seafood district and a taxi rank within walking distance, which matters when you only have two mornings.
Day one is Dadonghai in the morning, the downtown and First Market in the afternoon, and Luhuitou Park for sunset. Day two is Wuzhizhou Island, which needs an early start, a booked ticket and a full day.
Budget roughly ¥600-900 per person across the two days for transport, tickets and food, plus the hotel. The single biggest cost decision is your base: Dadonghai keeps taxi fares low, Yalong Bay adds ¥100 or more to every trip into town.
The plan at a glance
Times assume a weekday in the dry season. On Chinese public holidays add 45 to 60 minutes to every queue and every transfer.
| When | Where | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1, 07:00-09:30 | Dadonghai beach | Swim before the sun and the crowds. Lifeguarded zone, calm water. |
| Day 1, 09:30-11:00 | Breakfast near the beach | Hainan rice noodles or a bowl of coconut chicken soup, ¥15-35. |
| Day 1, 11:30-15:30 | Downtown and First Market | Seafood market, Jiefang Road, air-conditioned mall if it is raining. |
| Day 1, 16:30-19:00 | Luhuitou Park | Sunset from the 181m viewpoint, 10 minutes from Dadonghai by taxi. |
| Day 1, 19:30-21:30 | Seafood dinner | Pick it live at First Market, have it cooked next door. ¥100-200 per person. |
| Day 2, 07:00 | Leave the hotel | Taxi or DiDi to the Wuzhizhou pier, 30 to 40 minutes, ¥80-100. |
| Day 2, 08:00-16:30 | Wuzhizhou Island | First ferries, beach, snorkelling or the island cart circuit. |
| Day 2, 17:30-19:00 | Houhai Village or back in town | Eat near the pier, or return to Dadonghai for dinner. |
What to book before anything else
- The Wuzhizhou Island ticket. Roughly
¥133-168for adults including the round-trip ferry, cheapest on the official mini-program, also sold in English through Trip.com and similar platforms. The island caps daily visitors, so in the November to April window book a few days ahead, and a week or more for Spring Festival and National Day. - Payment apps. Alipay and WeChat Pay with a foreign card bound and passport verification done. Taxis, buses, ferries and market stalls all run on QR codes. See paying in China with a foreign card.
- Mobile data. A travel eSIM or a local SIM, installed before you fly. You need working maps and a translation app for the taxi ride to the pier. See eSIM options for China.
- The hotel. Dadonghai for this itinerary. A beach-side room there costs a fraction of Yalong Bay and saves you an hour of driving across two days.
Day 1: city, beach and sunset
- Early swim at DadonghaiThe bay is compact, sandy and swimmable, with a lifeguarded zone. By 10:00 it fills with domestic tour groups and photographers, so the first two hours are the good ones. Water in the dry season sits around 23 to 26°C.
- Breakfast on the seafront roadHainan rice noodles are the local breakfast, dressed with a thick sauce, peanuts and pickles, usually
¥10-20. Coconut chicken soup is the other staple. Both are mild rather than spicy. - Downtown and First MarketFirst Market is Sanya's seafood ritual: pick live prawns, crab, scallops and grouper from the stalls, then carry the haul to a neighbouring restaurant that cooks it to order. You pay for the seafood and the cooking separately. Go in the late morning or late afternoon to avoid the crush.
- Hide from the midday sunBetween roughly 12:00 and 15:00 the UV is punishing. Sanya has malls, a duty-free complex downtown and plenty of cafes, which is also the answer on a rain day.
- Luhuitou Park for sunsetA hill 181 metres above the peninsula, about 10 minutes from Dadonghai by taxi. Entry is around
¥45, plus¥15for the cart if you skip the walk up. The view covers the city, the bays and the South China Sea, and it is the single best sunset spot in Sanya. - Seafood dinnerBack at First Market or along the Dadonghai seafront. Budget
¥100-200per person for a proper seafood meal, less if you stick to one fish and one shellfish. Order by weight and confirm the price per500gbefore it goes in the pan.
Day 2: Wuzhizhou Island
This is the best beach day within reach of the city, and it needs to be treated as a full day with a fixed timetable. The island lies off Haitang Bay in the far east, 30 to 40 minutes from Dadonghai by taxi or DiDi for roughly ¥80-100. City buses 28 and 33 also run there for ¥10-12, taking about an hour, but they are slower and the signs are in Chinese.
The ferry crossing takes about 20 minutes and is included in the ticket. Sailings start around 08:00, and boarding normally closes around 16:00, so a late afternoon arrival can leave you on the wrong side of the water. The worst queue runs from about 09:00 to 11:00. Arriving at opening or after 14:00 is noticeably faster, though arriving after 14:00 also means a short day.
On the island, the walking paths and the electric cart circuit cover the same coastline from different angles. The cart is charged separately and is worth it if you want to see the far side without a long walk in the sun. Diving, snorkelling, jet skis and parasailing are all extra, priced individually or as packages, and it is cheaper to book a package than to add activities one at a time.
Two alternatives if the island is full or the sea is closed
| Option | Why choose it | Logistics |
|---|---|---|
| Yalong Bay | Best sand and calmest water in Sanya, no ticket needed | 25km east of the centre, 35 to 45 minutes, taxi ¥60-90 from Dadonghai. Public beach is free. |
| West Island | Quieter than Wuzhizhou, with a working fishing village and cheaper seafood | West of the centre near Tianya Haijiao, reached by ferry. A good wet-season substitute. |
| Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao | Both are west of town and pair naturally in one day | Best done as a two-stop taxi day, 40km and 23km west respectively. Entry to Nanshan is around ¥150. |
What it costs
| Item | Two-day cost per person |
|---|---|
| Airport transfer, each way | ¥25 by bus, ¥60-80 by taxi |
| DiDi and taxis across both days | ¥180-280 |
| Wuzhizhou Island, including ferry | ¥133-168 |
| Island cart circuit | ¥60-138, optional |
| Luhuitou Park, with cart | ¥45-60 |
| Food, two days, mid-range | ¥250-400 |
| Dadonghai hotel, per night | ¥300-500 |
Excluding the hotel, the two days land around ¥600-900 per person, or less if you use buses and skip the water sports. Adding a diving session or a parasailing flight can double the activity spend on its own, so decide that in advance rather than at the pier.
Practical notes
- No metro. Sanya runs on taxis, DiDi and buses. Fares start around
¥10-15for a taxi or DiDi flagfall, and city buses cost¥1-5. - Distances decide the day. Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay are 25 to 34km east of the centre, Nanshan is 40km west. Do not mix an eastern and a western attraction on the same day.
- Start early. Both days in this plan depend on being out of the hotel by 07:00. Sanya's afternoons are hot, busy and, in the wet season, wet.
- Carry small notes. Many places accept QR payments only, but a few hundred yuan in cash covers the exceptions.
Frequently asked questions
Is two days enough for Sanya?
For a short break, yes. Two days gives you one city day and one island or beach day, which covers the essentials at a decent pace. Three days lets you add a second bay or the rainforest without cutting anything short, and four or five suits anyone who wants Nanshan and a slower rhythm.
Should I stay at Dadonghai or Yalong Bay for two days?
Dadonghai for this itinerary. It is central, walkable for dinner, and roughly 30 to 40 minutes from the Wuzhizhou pier. Yalong Bay has the better beach but sits 25km east of the centre, which adds time and taxi cost to everything except the beach itself.
How do I get to Wuzhizhou Island?
Taxi or DiDi from Dadonghai takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs roughly ¥80-100. City buses 28 and 33 go to the pier area for ¥10-12 in about an hour. From Haitang Bay hotels it is under 15 minutes. Then a ferry of about 20 minutes, included in the island ticket.
Do I need to book Wuzhizhou Island in advance?
In peak season, yes. The island caps daily visitors and enforces the cap, so turning up at the pier is a gamble from November to April and during the July and August school holidays. The official WeChat mini-program is usually cheapest and avoids the on-site queue. Trip.com and similar platforms sell the same ticket in English.
Can I do both Wuzhizhou Island and Yalong Bay in two days?
You can, if you make day two a long one: island in the morning, Yalong Bay in the late afternoon on the way back. It is rushed and both places deserve more. A cleaner split is Wuzhizhou on day two and Yalong Bay as a half day on day three.
What if a typhoon closes the island?
Island ferries stop when a typhoon warning is up, and beaches close. That is most likely from July to September. The substitutes are the rainforest parks, the malls and duty-free complex, or a spa day at a resort. Build one flexible day into any wet-season trip.
Is Sanya walkable?
Within Dadonghai, yes: beach, restaurants, convenience stores and taxis are all within a few minutes on foot. Between bays, no. Yalong Bay is a self-contained resort strip, Haitang Bay is 34km from the centre, and even downtown to Luhuitou is a taxi ride.
How much should I budget for two days?
Roughly ¥600-900 per person excluding the hotel, covering transport, one island ticket, one paid attraction and mid-range meals. A Dadonghai hotel adds ¥300-500 a night. Water sports, diving and resort dining push the total up quickly.
