Short answer
Three days is where Sanya stops feeling like a compromise. Day one is the city and Dadonghai, day two is Wuzhizhou Island, day three is Yalong Bay with the rainforest or the western sights as the alternative. Each day sits in one part of the coast, which is the whole point: Sanya's attractions are strung along 40km, and a day that crosses the city twice is a day in a taxi.
Base yourself at Dadonghai for all three nights unless the beach is the entire reason for the trip, in which case Yalong Bay earns its price. Dadonghai keeps dinner, transport and a swimmable bay within walking distance, and it is roughly 30 to 40 minutes from the Wuzhizhou pier.
Budget around ¥900-1,300 per person across three days for transport, tickets and food, excluding the hotel. The two fixed costs to book ahead are the Wuzhizhou Island ticket, which is capped daily, and the Yalong Bay transfer if you are not staying there.
The plan at a glance
| Day | Where | Focus | Start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Dadonghai and downtown | Beach, First Market, Luhuitou sunset | 07:00 |
| Day 2 | Wuzhizhou Island, Haitang Bay | Best beach day in Sanya, snorkelling and water sports | 07:00 |
| Day 3 | Yalong Bay, or west to Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao | Clearest water and calmest swimming, or the Buddhist complex | 08:00 |
The pattern is deliberate: west of the centre on day one, far east on day two, east on day three, with everything in one direction each day. If you are staying in Yalong Bay instead, invert days two and three.
Day 1: Dadonghai and the city
Dadonghai is Sanya's oldest tourist beach and the most convenient. It is compact, sandy and swimmable, with a lifeguarded zone and a seafront road of restaurants behind it. By 10:00 it fills with domestic tour groups, so the early hours are worth more than the late ones.
- Swim before breakfastWater in the dry season sits around 23 to 26°C. Mornings are calm and the beach is nearly empty before 08:00.
- Hainan breakfastRice noodles dressed with a thick sauce, peanuts and pickles,
¥10-20, or a bowl of coconut chicken soup. Neither is spicy. - First MarketPick live seafood from the stalls, then take it to a neighbouring restaurant that cooks it to order. You pay for the fish and the cooking separately, so confirm the price per
500gbefore anything goes in the pan. Go late morning or late afternoon. - Midday indoorsBetween 12:00 and 15:00 the sun is at its worst. Malls, cafes and the duty-free complex downtown are the practical answer, and the wet-season answer too.
- Luhuitou Park at sunsetA hill 181 metres up at the tip of the peninsula, 10 minutes from Dadonghai. Entry around
¥45plus¥15for the cart. The view takes in the city, both bays and the open sea. - Seafood dinnerBack at First Market or the Dadonghai seafront,
¥100-200per person for a full seafood meal.
Day 2: Wuzhizhou Island
This is the single best beach day in Sanya and the one day that needs a timetable. Wuzhizhou is a small island of about 1.5 square kilometres off Haitang Bay in the far east of the city, reached by a ferry crossing of roughly 20 minutes.
| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Ticket | Roughly ¥133-168 for adults including the round-trip ferry. The official WeChat mini-program is usually cheapest and skips the on-site queue. |
| Ferry hours | Sailings start around 08:00. Boarding normally stops around 16:00, so an afternoon arrival can leave you on the mainland side. |
| Worst queue | 09:00 to 11:00. Arriving at opening or after 14:00 is noticeably faster. |
| Getting there | Taxi or DiDi from Dadonghai is 30 to 40 minutes and ¥80-100. Buses 28 and 33 take about an hour for ¥10-12. Under 15 minutes from Haitang Bay hotels. |
| Visitor cap | The island limits daily arrivals and enforces the limit. Book ahead from November to April and during the July and August school holidays. |
| Extras | Electric cart circuit, diving, snorkelling, jet skis and parasailing are all charged separately. Packages cost less than adding activities one by one. |
Time it so you take the first boats of the morning, spend the hot middle of the day in the water rather than walking, and leave with at least an hour of margin before the last return sailing. Food on the island is basic and roughly double city prices, so eat a proper breakfast and plan dinner back on the mainland.
Day 3: Yalong Bay, or west to Nanshan
Two good options, and they are in opposite directions. Pick one rather than trying to do both.
Option A: Yalong Bay
A 7 to 8km crescent of fine pale sand backed by the densest cluster of five-star resorts in the city. The water is the clearest and calmest in Sanya, the beach gradient is shallow and the waves are mild, which makes it the safest swimming on the island. The beach itself is public and free, with access points along the coast road. What you cannot do is walk out of the resort strip and find a normal Chinese neighbourhood, so eat before you go or accept resort prices.
It is about 25km east of the centre. From Dadonghai, a taxi takes 35 to 45 minutes for roughly ¥60-90. Pair it with the Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park above the bay if you want an afternoon of views, or with a half day at the beach and an early dinner in town.
Option B: west to Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao
Both sit west of the centre on the road back toward the airport, which makes them one coherent day rather than two.
- Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, 40km west, is built around a 108-metre Guanyin statue standing in the sea on its own platform. Entry is around
¥150, plus¥20-30for the internal cart, which is worth taking because the site is long and exposed. It is a large modern complex rather than an ancient temple, with heavy tour-group traffic. - Tianya Haijiao, 23km west, is two inscribed boulders on the shore marking what Chinese tradition called the end of the earth. Two to three hours, mostly for the coastal walk and the photographs.
- West Island sits on the same western stretch, reached by ferry, and is quieter than Wuzhizhou with a working fishing village and cheaper seafood. It is the better island if you want fewer people over better facilities.
What it costs
| Item | Three-day cost per person |
|---|---|
| Airport transfer, each way | ¥25 by bus, ¥60-80 by taxi |
| DiDi and taxis across three days | ¥280-420 |
| Wuzhizhou Island, including ferry | ¥133-168 |
| Island cart circuit | ¥60-138, optional |
| Luhuitou Park, with cart | ¥45-60 |
| Nanshan, entry plus cart | ¥170-180 |
| Tianya Haijiao | Check the current price, free periods are common |
| Food, three days, mid-range | ¥350-600 |
| Dadonghai hotel, per night | ¥300-500 |
Excluding the hotel, three days land around ¥900-1,300 per person. Staying in Yalong Bay instead raises the accommodation line and adds roughly ¥150-250 in extra taxi fares across the trip, which is the real cost of the better beach.
If the weather turns
Sanya's wet season runs May to October, and typhoon season peaks from July to September. During a typhoon warning, island ferries stop and beaches close, which removes both of the island days in this plan at once.
| Condition | Substitute |
|---|---|
| Afternoon downpour | Malls, duty-free complex, cafes, a spa afternoon. Showers are usually short. |
| Island ferries suspended | Yanoda Rainforest in Baoting, entry about ¥168 including the internal shuttle, or the Yalong Bay forest park. |
| Several days of rain | Atlantis Aquaventure water park and aquarium at Haitang Bay, which is indoor and outdoor and open year round. |
| Red flag on the beach | Stay out of the water. The hotel pool is the alternative, not the surf. |
Practical notes
- No metro. Taxis, DiDi and buses only, plus a short tram along the Sanya Bay waterfront. Fares start around
¥10-15, city buses¥1-5. - One direction per day. Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay are 25 to 34km east, Nanshan is 40km west. Crossing the city twice wastes the day.
- Book the capped attractions. Wuzhizhou Island and Nanshan both sell out in peak season, meaning November to April plus the summer holidays.
- Start early, rest at midday. The UV is strong all year, including on overcast days. Mornings and late afternoons outdoors, the middle of the day indoors or in the water.
- Set up payment before you fly. Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card and passport verification done. Taxis, ferries and markets run on QR codes.
Frequently asked questions
Is three days enough for Sanya?
Three days covers the city, one island and one bay properly, which is the core of a Sanya trip. It does not include the rainforest, the western sights or a second island. Four or five days lets you add those without cutting anything short, and is the better length if you want the trip to feel like a holiday rather than a checklist.
Which island is better, Wuzhizhou or West Island?
Wuzhizhou has the better sand, clearer water and the full range of water sports, and it is the one to pick for a first trip. West Island is quieter, cheaper and has a working fishing village, so it suits anyone who prefers fewer people over better facilities. Both are reached by ferry and both need most of a day.
Should I stay in Dadonghai or Yalong Bay for three days?
Dadonghai for a mixed itinerary. It is central, walkable for meals and roughly 30 to 40 minutes from the Wuzhizhou pier. Yalong Bay suits a trip where the beach is the main event, since it has the best sand and calmest water, but everything else becomes a 25km taxi ride. A split stay, two nights in Dadonghai and one in Yalong Bay, is also workable.
How do I get to Wuzhizhou Island and what does it cost?
Taxi or DiDi from Dadonghai, 30 to 40 minutes and roughly ¥80-100, then a ferry of about 20 minutes that is included in the island ticket. Adults pay around ¥133-168 including the round-trip ferry, and the official mini-program is usually the cheapest channel. Book ahead in peak season because daily arrivals are capped.
Can I visit Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao on the same day?
Yes, and it works well because both are west of the centre on the same road. Nanshan needs half a day or more and Tianya Haijiao two to three hours. A taxi day is the simplest way, or a tour that covers both. Do not also try to reach Yalong Bay the same day, since it is in the opposite direction.
What happens if a typhoon hits during my trip?
Island ferries stop and beaches close while the warning is up, so both island days in this plan can disappear. The substitutes are the rainforest parks, the Atlantis water park and aquarium, the duty-free complex and hotel facilities. Typhoon risk peaks from July to September, which is also the cheapest time to visit for exactly that reason.
Do I need to rent a car in Sanya?
No. Taxis and DiDi are cheap and easy to hail, and the distances are manageable. A car makes sense only for multi-day island touring or for reaching the west coast on your own schedule. Note that driving in China requires a Chinese licence or a recognised international permit, and the process is not quick.
How much does three days in Sanya cost?
Roughly ¥900-1,300 per person excluding the hotel, covering transport, the island ticket, one or two paid attractions and mid-range meals. A Dadonghai hotel adds ¥300-500 a night, Yalong Bay ¥800 and up. Diving, parasailing and resort dining are the main things that push the total higher.
